Was it just me, or was this the most disappointing launch party ever? no cool t-shirts, dog tags,or mouse pads, not even anything on sale. I won a free iTunes song. Big whoop. I could have stayed home and drank a pepsi and gotten the same thing.

Just got back. I ordered mine so I had it earlier today and am typing on it NOW. My shiney new iPod Shuffle (1 GB) is in my USB hub full of music and charging away! I did not win it, but I did get a 10 percent card and my loving wife gave me her iTune card. I ended up not using the 10 percent on my iPod because I could use my EDU discount. I handed it to the couple initially infront of me because they told me they wanted to get a new Powerbook if they had the 10 percent card. Gave it to them and walked out. Turn out in Columbus was INCREDIBLE. I have NEVER, not even during Christmas seen that many people at the Apple Store. I was surprised there was no news media. They closed the parking spots in front of the store and had some of our counties finest with the Easton Town Center security guards also standing watch. The mood was jovial among everyone. I held my box up triumphantly before I crossed the street and got some cheers. I got in the door in the first group and there were STILL people getting in live when I left! It was a experience I will never forget. I took a pic on my cam phone. I can e-mail it to some one that has space for posting it up here. The line went form the store to almost out to the main drag and once let in, it was PACKED. I was floored. Liking my TIGER, my iPod and my 16 new iTunes I got with it! Yeah, no free stuff beyond the iTune, but I don't care! It was fun as hell and I was glad to be a part of it!:D

Personally, I think it would be pretty sweet to win a Dual 2.7 G5, iPod Photo 60gb, and full Final Cut Studio suite as a door prize
....But thats just me. Some would be happy with just a 512mb shuffle

I thought this launch party kinda sucked. I went there just for free schwag and to see if there were any decent sales. Not so much as a lousy keychain. What a waste of almost an hour waiting in line.

I bet I got my copy of Tiger in the most unique way.

I got it through my University's bookstore. The bookstore on my campus also runs a small J&J type convinence store on campus adjecent to the main bookstore. The main bookstore area closes at 5:30, but the release party doesn't start until 6, so what is the bookstore to do? Well, sell Tiger at the J&J of course!

So I've got some sweet pictures of me getting my copy of Tiger as well as a 512MB iPod Shuffle for $50 (that's what the bookstore got to do as a promotion, as opposed to the Apple Store's giveaways) at a small J&J-type convinence store!

People are going to see the pictures and be like, "wow, your 7-11 sells Mac stuff? sweet!"

Was it just me, or was this the most disappointing launch party ever?.This was my first Apple Event party and I am also disappointed. I read of the other give-a-ways from past parties, and I read somewhere of possible Tiger T-shirts at this party, so I was first in line at the Houston Galleria store at 4:15. When 6pm rolled around, the 30 or so staff inside the store started clapping and getting all pumped up. I received my scratch card, revealing the consolation prize of 10% off. Too bad the only thing I'm going to buy is a new iMac, which has not been released yet. I left after 2 minutes empty handed.

I then drove over to Microcenter, who is offering a $50 MIR for Tiger. Only 6 other people in the Apple section there. Picked up a USB 2 4-port hub for $13. Then went to CompUSA, and only one other person in the Apple section there. CUSA has a drawing for an iPod, and looking at the people that were there, I probably have a 1 in 25 chance of winning. They are suppose to call by 9PM if I win. I was more excited about that then the disappointing Apple Store party, because I felt like I have a real chance of winning something there.

Was there no general 10% off this time around?

I went to the Tokyo event yesterday evening (blog report here - 29 April entry) (http://www.wheresdrew.com/) and my scratch ticket got me a Spotlight keychain. I bought a PowerBook (15" combo drive) and was given the 10% off when I asked for it. I mentioned the deal during the Jaguar and Panther launches, but wasn't sure what the scoop was for Tiger since there were no Apple stores in Japan for either of the previous two launches.

When I was at the register the guy who was helping me said I could get 10% off Applecare if I bought it with the PB, but I declined. I did get an Airport Express for 10% off though.

I thought maybe they weren't going to announce the 10% off until later in the event, once the line had gone down and the store cleared out some. (I left at 6:20 and the line to get in was still 2.5 blocks long.)

Apr 29, 2005, 10:17 PM
I was lucky enough to win an Airport Express! Although the gal in front of me won the powerbook at the Cincinnati store. Most people ever I've seen at the apple store. The first time I've seen the 30" display in person. It's absolutely criminal. It takes days to move your mouse from left to right. You need to take a break!

Anyway, EDU Tiger in hand, all is good. And not that we weren't sure before, but Core Image is NOT enabled on the Mac Mini's (I did a System Profiler from the store). It's still fast, though and works like a charm on my PB Al 15"

I'm a recent switcher and I was so looking forward to this "event" because I had heard the others have been cool. I love my Mac and thought I'd be tempted into buying a lot of other goodies. I even managed to convince my buddy to go with me. But, it was so disappointing. (Of course, this is NC so I shouldn't expect too much, right?) Got there an hour early and there was a line (about 70 in front of me). All they gave away were the cards. (Whoohoo, free iTune). No shirts, nothing. The staff seemed disorganized and they didn't really demo anything at first. Anyway, we left to go eat. Came back and there was no line, went in (another free iTune, whoohoo!) Saw an Automator demo that was horrible. It crashed on him, then the next thing he tried didn't work at all. He tried something else and it kind of worked (it was supposed to prompt him and it wouldn't). Nothing at all tempted me. Plus, I thought they'd advertise the 10% off but I didn't see anything so I didn't know about it. Shame cuz I had the $ and the itch to buy. :p

On the bright side, Tiger looks awesome and it was nice to talk to other switchers and Mac fans that our local. For some reason, I can't find that many around here.

Apr 29, 2005, 10:26 PM
Yeah I only got the 10% off also. I was tempted to go to the back of the line but judging from how many tickets were in the box I'd be better off getting a scratch ticket from the state lottery.

Yes, we all know how dissapointing it is when Apple doesn't give you free stuff...
Anyways, how about the amazing new HD trailers?! The one for batman is quite awesome, although I find it a bit weird that the image quality is so great and yet the sound comes out so muffled and distorted, especially in the bass. H.264 seems pretty rad for the moment. I wonder how long it will be before they re-incode all their trailers in the format, just for smaller size. Also, probably just because of Safari, but don't the downloads for trailers in quicktime seem much faster now?
Right now I'm encoding a DVD into H.263 with Handbrak .70 on my powermac G5 1.6ghz, and it is pretty slow. I'm backing the DVD up so that I can use it for a school assignment and I'm not in a rush, but I'm only getting around 5fps, compared to about 20fps for DivX. Oh well, i'm hoping it looks noticably better with less artifacts and such (turning it into a 1.25 gig file).

I was hoping for the 10% discount also. Wore my dog tags to the event. According to Where's Drew?, it sounds as though the 10% discount was available if you ask. That is a real bummer. Took advantage in 2003. Now will have to wait until late 2006 or early 2007 for another chance.

I went to the Tiger event prepared to walk out with a my first Mac, a decked out Mini using the 10% discount everyone said would be in effect.

Instead I got a free itunes song. Big whoop. And they wouldn't give me another card.

What a complete waste. They give 10% discounts to people who have no interest in buying anything, and me wanting to spend a thousand dollars can't get the discount. All it does is create ill will.

I've been trying to buy a Mini from the store in NC since January. They always manage to convince me not to buy. In February I wanted to buy, but they said you couldn't add wireless to the Mini's they had. Told me to order online. Then Tiger was coming out, figured I'd wait for it to be announced to avoid the $130 charge. Go to the store after announce and they were out of the decked out model that had told me they now stock. So I left again. Then heard about the 10% off, might as well wait for that. Go back to the store, to find no discount and no one particularly interested in selling me a system.

I give. Maybe a PC isn't so bad afterall, no problem walking into a store getting what I want.

I must admit too that as a stockholder, I was underwhelmed. Apple can't afford to be making this type of collosal marketing blunder. The stock price is too high for this type of mistake. Encourages me to ditch the stock before more iPod competitors come around.

Hmm.. steep system requirements to see the HD gallery... hmph we will see if my little G4 1ghz, 784mb Ram, 128 Radeon Pro system can handle it... from what apple says it can't, but I would like to try.

Well, I won a 1GB iPod Shuffle...actually, I went in with two other people, out of our three tickets, two of us won the iPod Shuffle...that was cool...but I agree, I was underwhelmed at the release...I am a current PC owner who is TRYING to switch...but I am also waiting for the updated iMacs...because I think that will be the best option for me. It would have been nice to have systems ready to go with Tiger pre-installed on them...to go out the door...especially if an update is going to happen relatively soon.

I went looking for an OSX Tiger window sticker, with no luck.

I got the rep to try rotating a 30" display with Tiger, but it wouldn't display the option because it said (after a search) the display wouldn't do it. I don't know what the card was.

No phone call yet, so I guess I didn't win the iPod shuffle.

I went to CompUSA for the launch with a few buddies of mine, they had snacks and stuff, I managed to grab like 5 of those Spotlight Flashlight Keychains and the Dashboard window sticker. I was thinking of going to Los Angeles for the launch, good thing I didn't and instead went to my local CompUSA. I got Tiger yesturday anyways.

A lot of the apple resellers had some sort of launch party.. Computer System centre opened until 12.. which proved to be useful :-)

Got my preordered copy today :D

Also went to visit a White Plains, NY Mac:Store to take a shot at door prizes, took my family, we got:
- 3 free itunes songs
- 10% off coupon [which I used to get a sleek 20" cinema display, price drop-10% cool!]
- we all got spotlight keychains
- plus Ben&Jerry's was handing out free ice cream to the people waiting to get into the store,

nice pleasant evening.

Now if i could only get a G5 PowerBook

I agree, this is great news. I've been looking forward to Java 1.5 on OS X for some time now. I can't wait to get Tiger and try it out to see if Apple has done everything they promised us. In fact, this is the only reason I'll be getting Tiger.

Sorry the release party wasn't better. I didn't go this time, but I remember having a good time at the Panther release with some nice giveaways and discounts. It is lame that they didn't offer the 10% discount to everyone there.

I went to both stores in the Dallas area, and got a 10% discount and a free iTunes card. Of course, my 10% card is less than my student discount would be in most places, and resllers online who offer free shipping and no tax on the Mac Mini are even cheaper in net cost than a student-discounted Mac Mini, so...

Still, it was okay, for my first (two) launch part[y|ies]. The Willow Bend employees were almost friendly instead of rude, this time, even. (The Knox employees were fine and helpful, but I expected that)

Just got back from the local Apple Store. There were about 50 people in line and the place was packed. My friend wanted to buy Tiger, but I decided to hold off. I would rather wait for a few upgrades plus I will get it with the new G5 when ever they come out.

I will have to play with it before I decide to get it instead of waiting for a new machines.

could be worse, tiger could be 2 years late, missing 3 or more of it's core features and cost $300.

oh and as for you "wanting to buy a mac" give it up, if you had really wanted one you'd of ordered one online, you're just looking for excuses.

Went to the local store in Huntington, NY. Quite a few people but no free stuff. Don't care much about the 10% discount because of EDU eligibility, but would have liked a t-shirt (even if they were selling them), or at least dog-tags.

But played around with Tiger. I really like Dashboard and can see Spotlight becoming very-very useful.

My copy of Tiger has been shipped and the PM order is being processed. Looking forward to a more powerful system compared to my current PB. Good that I did not get everything by today - this way I don't neglect the kids over the weekend :)

WORST. LAUNCH. PARTY. EVER.

I feel for the people who actually waited in line for 6PM to roll around. I stopped by the Michigan Avenue Apple Store around 10PM after a night out with my friends, and all I got was one of the scratch 'n win cards. Oh yay, a free iTunes song. Not even keychains, dogtags, t-shirts, anything.

Boo.

And they had abnormally loud (bad) music blasting. What was that about? I've never been less excited about being in an Apple Store, and I love going there!

To be honest I’m not overly surprised. Apple IMHO has turned into IBM as of late. e.g all business, no fun. The company seems to have gone corporate in a BIG way which is a shame. Apparently someone at Apple felt it was time that they grew up. :( Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to stop at the Apple store. Hitchhiker ran past the closing time in the adjoined mall so no chance to play with Tiger. Of course there is tomorrow. :D

Me too, I won a free Itunes song and then gave it away cause i got no iTunes account. :(

No iTunes account, eh? I think I know why Apple was giving away so many iTunes songs. I was at the Apple store inside the Glendale Galleria and there were a lot of people there. Many people passing by wondered what was going on, went inside to see, and were handed a scratch card. Most likely, they got a free iTunes song as well since it seems like only the early people in line were the ones who won anything worthwhile.

Anyways, those people were probably PC users (since they had no idea what was going on) and have never used iTunes before. The free song is Apple's way of introducing them to the iTMS. They get the first song free and then if they like the experience, they buy more and more (like a drug dealer giving away a free sample with the hope that the person will become addicted). They then decide to buy an iPod to listen to their new music. And that's when the iPod halo effect kicks in, and then next thing you know they're buying their first Mac -- probably an iMac. So,...

1) Give away free iTunes song
2) User gets hooked
3) User buys iPod
4) User likes iPod so much, they buy a Mac (their first?) = iPod halo effect
5) Profit!

Or, maybe I'm just bored and reading too much into Apple's marketing scheme. :p

Cherry Creek Colorado was no good. If I didn't know that it was a special day for Apple before I walked in, I never would have known. No large scale demos or giveaways. Everyone got 10% or itunes, but as far as I know there were no ipod or powerbook winners. Their stack of scratch cards was way too large.

I feared I missed out on a free beer, iMac updated w/10 percent off and a large breasted hot chick as the sales person. Instead you got the hard core Mac/Star Wars guys saying it sucked! Sounds as if I made the correct decision. Now back to sleep!

At the Palo Alto store I waited in line maybe 15 minutes (it was about 1/2 block long). Went in, was handed a scratch ticket. Won an iTunes song which I didn't use.

As I scratched off my ticket an Apple employee sarcastially remarked, "well did you win the lottery?". That put me in a bad mood... I then looked around and didn't see any T-shirts, which put me in a worse mood.

I then played with Tiger a little, mostly with Dashboard, and was disappointed. I may be missing something, but it seems you can't use your Dashboard widgets side by side with full blown apps. By that I mean, if you are in Dashboard world and click on a normal application or finder window, all the Dashboard widgets disappear! To get Dashboard widgets back you have to click on the Dashboard icon in the dock...

I've gone to all the launch events, and up till now was so enthused each time that I either bought the OS in the store because I couldn't wait, or ordered online the same day to get my government discount.

Waiting in line for an OS release is a somewhat insane thing to do... the t-shirts lent a feeling of being part of something, and compensated in some way. I guess Apple feels that it doesn't need to build community these days.

Anyway, I feel no urgency to go out and get Tiger now... I probably will eventually, but no big rush.

Anyone read the Quicktime HD requirements? DAMN!

For 1280x720 (720p) video at 24-30 frames per second:
1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer
At least 256 MB of RAM
64 MB or greater video card
For 1920x1080 (1080p) video at 24-30 frames per second:
Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer
At least 512 MB of RAM
128 MB or greater video card

Was wondering why my G5 was stuttering a bit on the 1080p videos.

I almost went the PA store, but I figure parking was going to be terrible and there would be a lot more people. There were maybe 15 to 20 people waiting at the shopping center. A lot of people in that store one shuffles.

Did he have short blonde hair and blue eyes. There's one guy ther that does and he's a real jerk. I think he thinks he's funny, but he's really a jackass... I keep hoping their can him.. I know it's a terrible thing to say, but he's rude.

Probably not a lot of people excited by this, but I am. I was going to hold off on Tiger, now I guess I am going to be buying it tomorrow.

:)

I won't be upgrading to Tiger for a while (gotta wait for any issue to be ironed out), so I'm missing out on J2SE1.5 . It is actually a pretty big disapointment that it isn't released for 10.3. It is becoming stable and widely adopted enough so that you are starting to need it.
Guess I'll have to upgrade sooner than I thought.

Then why didn't you trade or ask one of those people for their card??!!

Jeeze. Apple events are social. Talk to people and you will be suprised. If you asked the sales person for the discount with a Mini in hand I'll bet they would have given it to you as they did others on this forum.

Wow! That is kinda hefty. My PowerBook (and current models for that matter) won't be able to handle that :( , which means Apple needs to update them immediately.

i enjoyed it cuz i won iWork '05 :D :D

Okay it was my first apple store party/opening thingie event ever.
I was at the opening of the Bullring store England and it was rammed to the gills. The t-shirts must have been imported from the US as they are HUGE!
Believe me I could wrap up an entire muslim family in one alone (including several wives) and still have room to hide a powerbook up there and try to walk out undetected. Also got a 10% voucher which I didn't end up using. I wasn't planning on buying anything... Just see what the store was like. It's nice but small, but nice.... and small.
Oh and got a look at a setup with 2 30inch displays side by side....... If only I had the money.

I hit the Cherry Creek and Aspen Grove stores in Colorado. I was at Cherry Creek for the opening, and there was a pretty big line. Once in, the place was so packed you could barely move. Still, the folks behind the registers did a great job of keeping the lines moving, and everyone was very friendly. I only got a couple of free songs, but it's more than I had when I went in. The only disappointment is that they didn't do the edu discount in-store.

As always, my favorite thing about being in an Apple store is helping people while I wander around looking at things. I caught a few questions tonight. It's nice to be able to help.

Anyways, I can't believe I stood in line and all i got was a free song from iTunes =).

Now I have to decide what song I should download for free?

Any suggestions?

Here is a photo of the queue outside the Apple Store London 15 minutes before the doors opened. Very nice atmosphere. I was about so far back in the queue that my spot is not even in this photo yet I still out the door with my copy of Tiger by 6.20.

1st time at one of these, and the line partially trailed down one mall corridor around 6:15, and was filled by 6:45.

Entered by 7:10, and the guy at the door mistook me temporarily for a walk-by rather than a liner, having me wonder if I should've asked for a Tiger handout card. Realizing that I was one of four singles allowed in...

... as usual, it was hot inside from the close-in walls of the boutique-style store (Mayfair Mall (http://www.apple.com/retail/mayfair), WI), and many were eyeballing Tiger. My scratchoff offered an iTune (I selected a song from "The Producers"); a liner a few steps in front of me got a FREE iWork, another a few steps behind a FREE iPod; in all the excitement, I forgot to buy what I came in for: a Final Cut Express upgrade (it now includes the previously $300 Soundtrack) for $99.

I wandered back to the Barnes&Noble store (opposite end of mall; only place I could find parking) for an OJ and back home.

Worth it? For the fun of it all -- most certainly!

Was it just me, or was this the most disappointing launch party ever? no cool t-shirts, dog tags,or mouse pads, not even anything on sale. I won a free iTunes song. Big whoop. I could have stayed home and drank a pepsi and gotten the same thing.

Same scenario. I went in at 6:05. The line was long and was hectic getting in (to the Phoenix Biltmore store) and I got my card, looked around, watched a little bit on "Tiger" and got out. Got some dinner and coffee with my friends, watched a movie. Came back 30-15 minutes before midnight and the lady handing out the scratch cards recognized me so I was unable to get another one. What a jip haha. Oh, and the second one was 10% off that I couldn't even use with my student discount. No free t-shirts, dog tags. Lame party. I had more fun at Starbucks, and Starbucks is a re-occuring thing. :(

They will play but the file sizes are rather large. Most are over 100 megabytes so a fast connection would be needed.

I have a 1 GHz iBook with 640 MB RAM and it plays, when the processor is turned to the highest setting. It's not full motion, but high enough for it to be smooth. Awesome quality that puts DVD to shame.

Hey, there is a really cute asian in the SF store. She's a really hottie. I think her name is tricha. I had to give her a double eye brow raise.

I got the usual 10% off discount good for the night like most peeps. I guess if I went there without the expectations for free stuff, I wouldn't be so disappointed. But the SF store even gave t-shirts for .Mac night, so naturely I thought I would get something at the tiger premiere.

So, how many hardware prizes were there at each store?

Got there about 9, not a whole lot of people at the Buffalo, NY Galleria store. They weren't very willing to give me a scratch off on the way in. They questioned me first if I was there already. Jeeze. who-hoo. I one an iTunes song. I was tempted to leave and come back once there was someone new in the door.

Went over and played with Tiger. To be honest, I was really all that impressed. I just couldn't see spending $130 right now, I could think of much better things. They didn't seem to be selling a whole lot of Tigers. There was a big shelf in the middle of the store all tiger, but the shelf was full. I pulled on off, and had a hard time fitting it back on. I think it was kinda funny, it was like they were planning on people rushing in there and compltetly emptying the thing... when it was no-where near empty.

I won't make an effort to go to the next one.

Let me reiterate - thank god it's out. When I found out that Tiger was not going to come with Java 1.5 on the disk I was VERY disappointed. This is a big deal if you use you mac for developing java, and Windows and Linux versions have been full release (from Sun) for about eight months.

This being my first launch party, I thought it was pretty fun. For me, i'd rather have a free iTunes song over a mouse pad or tee shirt. The Sagemore store was really cramped though, and the employees didn't get to use Tiger beforehand, so some made minor mistakes when showing customers. Overall, it was just interesting to be around my mac brethren, as there are very few mac geeks in my town. There were iPods everywhere hooked up to speakers, and beautiful cinema displays that made me drool. Too bad I didn't win the PB, but i got 2 iTunes songs and a 10% off! (went w/ my mom and dad who gave them to me).

Went to the Kenwood store here in Cincinnati. Got there around 5 after 6pm and there was no line at all, which was the first indication that something was wrong. At the Panther event last year, the line occupied the entire length of the mall. When we walked in, I was given a scratch-off ticket, but the person working the door offered one to my girlfriend, but then yanked it back real quick and gave us a mean look. I don't know what her problem was. I got her one from the guy on the other side of the entrance. Both iTunes songs, anyway.

Nothing interesting going on. I'd have to agree with the "Worst Launch Ever" sentiment. Had I had to drive more than 10 minutes to get there I would have been really upset. I really wanted a little spotlight flashlight, but no luck :(

My experience was pretty good last night. I guess I was one of the lucky ones that got a 10% off scratch ticket and I used it to get the last Mac mini "Ultimate" they had remaining at the store. I was hoping for maybe a t-shirt or some other goodies, but all in all I can't complain. I got my new Mac that came with the Tiger upgrade DVD pack-in and that's all I went there to buy anyway. The wait to get in the store was only about 20 minutes even though there were a few hundred people there at 6pm, so it wasn't bad at all.

This was my first visit to an Apple retail store and it was a good coincidence that I had planned to do something in the Chicago area on the very day the launch happened. I visited the North Michigan Avenue store at around 5:45p.m., only to see a long line that went three fourths around that building. :D Instead of wasting my time there I went for a short walk and came back at 6:15 - no queue!

The store was JAM PACKED with people!!! There were a lot of people even after 8p.m. The Tiger demo was good. From the scratch cards they distributed, I got a 10% off card and although I found it tempting to go for a new Power Mac, I decided to put my purchase off for later when I could think clearly. :p Wish they had more people getting some *real goodies*! ;)

P.S.: This is my first post here - had to start sometime since I have a lot of questions about buying a Mac and I feel getting some answers from the community would be useful (I used to lurk in usenet before). BTW, I'm a PC user who's been eyeing the Mac for quite sometime now.

I thought this launch party kinda sucked. I went there just for free schwag and to see if there were any decent sales. Not so much as a lousy keychain. What a waste of almost an hour waiting in line.

Most. Disappointing. Launch. Ever. :(

No t-shirts. No keychain. No dog tag. Just a free iTunes song. Was hoping to get a 10 percent discount to pick up a new PowerBook. Oh well. Guess I'll hold out until the next iBook or PowerBook update.

So bummed...

In February I wanted to buy, but they said you couldn't add wireless to the Mini's they had. Told me to order online.

WORST. LAUNCH. PARTY.

I've never been less excited about being in an Apple Store, and I love going there!

http://img17.paintedover.com/uploads/17/baby3.jpg

Guys, I'm going to be honest. I was really disappointed today. They gave away SO many prizes, and I got THREE tickets, and in those tickets... Two 10% offs and 1 free iTunes song. I wanted a prize. Some freakin' hardware. :(

Same scenario. I went in at 6:05. The line was long and was hectic getting in (to the Phoenix Biltmore store) and I got my card, looked around, watched a little bit on "Tiger" and got out. Aw, come on... mentioning apple stock and not wanting to spend a full $600 for a Mac mini. You should get a PC, my friend, you're making up too many excuses to not get your mac. Why didn't you order online with wireless since the first time they suggested? You were willing to spend more than $600. Then you wanted to have Tiger and save the $130. Then you wanted to pay $600 minus the 10% for the mini and Tiger. What gives? You don't want to spend your precious stock on a Mac, I suggest you don't if you don't think it's worth it. Or maybe you should look into an iMac...

Oh well, all of us will enjoy ours in the meantime.

How dare they not give me more free things, like a free t-shirt, or free flashlight, or free keychain or free SOMETHING ELSE!!! Some party!!! You'd think it was run by a company who was trying to make money or sell a product or something.

OH WAIT!

LOL!!! :D :D :D This is the best post I've read in the whole thread. Great laugh. I'm glad someone took the time to do it. "No cake, clowns, or games...whaaaaaaa!!!" Okay maybe Doom 3 hehe, but not for free.

I can't believe how dissapointed people are about not getting free stuff. It's the Apple Store people. You go there to buy things: spend money. I mean it's OK to take advantage when you can get something on sale. But someone even said they were dissapointed they didn't get any hardware at the event. Thinks he is the one who deserved the free PowerBook.
I can't believe it. The event by the way was intended for Tiger's launch. The only thing you should have expected was to get a copy of Tiger. Everything else is a reward for attending.

For those people who complained about not getting to use 10% off on the OSX release, I got an email from Micro Center saying they were selling it for $79 after rebate until June. That's just $10 more than my student price would be, so it's probably a good deal for nonstudents. They also seemed to have cheap minis, if you're not a student, too.

I went to the Houston Galleria last night for the launch party. My first one actually because I always order this kind of stuff online because of the educational discount.

I'm glad I went even though I will admit that I was surprised at the lack of free trinkets after what I heard about previous parties. I got the 10% off which was fine because I was buying some software. The best part was waiting in the line before the store opened up. Since it was in the Galleria people kept coming up to us and asking what was going on. The variety of reactions from people were interesting from the people who said mockingly "oh software... better hurry into line then", to the teenagers who really started jumping up and down when we told them they were giving away iPods, to the elderly gentleman who stayed for about 10 minutes asking questions about Apple.

This was my first Apple Event party and I am also disappointed.

Were you in yellow? :)

At least I know I didn't miss anything anywhere else!

Hahaha, that kills me. If you truly deserve a new PowerBook, then God will specifically come down and give you one. Otherwise, you don't deserve it.

Economists will all agree that those who deserve a PowerBook already have one.

I think Apple made a killing though and that's really what they're after. I think they saw that a 10% discount is much better than giving away keychains (seriously, you guys complain that you don't have more stuff on your keys to bulge out your pants and ruin a perfect hemline? Or a flashlight? Are you guys always in the dark or something?).

I think that there are way more satisfied people than there are dissatisfied people. The people who visit these forums are just macaddicts who have totally hyped expectations. In the end, moving their inventory that customers want to buy is more important than giving away trinkets customers probably don't need.

And the elitist exclusive Apple club can continue on its merry way. If Apple doesn't want folks to switch so be it. Bunch of folks wetting themselves over a minor update to an operating system, waiting in lines to pay full price for something they can buy anytime.
Apple makes a big deal about a launch party. There was no party. Come stand in line to see nothing going on and pay full price for a minor update. Give me a break! Way to piss off new prospective customers. Oh my gosh, someone trying to save money. That must be a crime. Apparently to be a member of the Apple club you have to be willing to spend loads of cash for unimproved hardware and software. Its insulting to even consider getting something at a discount. Snob hill I guess. Sorry I tried to append to the forum. Have to be in love with Apple to own one, no dissent allowed.
Apple acts like it doesn't need the business. That may well explain Apple staying at 2% market share. No wonder they can't get any momentum going.

Go into your Applications Folder look for Dashboard, listed alphabetically. Then drag the icon from the Applications folder back to your Dock. Check the System Preferences in your Dock.

since I don't have tiger (I only played with it at the store), I'd say try and use the spotlight feature in the upper right hand corner (does anyone that has used launchbar see some similarities? apple+space to activate spotlight, same for launchbar...) I think if you type in "Dashboard" it should be able to find it. Then you can just drag into the dock again I think.

Seriously, if you're too greedy or stuck up to be happy with an iTunes code, post it here, someone else will gladly claim the free song and be thankful for it... rather than disappointed.

People these days, always want something for nothing, then when they get something for nothing, it's not good enough!!!

That's cool for you to umm, post that and everything-what a burn. BUT, after hearing all the hype on macrumors forum about the crazy ***** that Apple has done in the past for other premieres, this one was dissappointing because I had an opportunity cost of going to a REAL party, and not driving almost 3 hours. People saying "t-shirts, keychains, dog-tags" etc. was very exciting. A free iTunes song that I just downloaded off of Limewire for free. Very dissappointing. The people weren't even willing to help on a few questions I had, a waste of gas and time. I'm not bitching completely, I have Apple's stock....Yay! :o

Wait, what will they be announcing in June?

i always feel so compelled to wait becuase i'm scared i'lld rop down my cash and a few months later somethign amazing will come out and i wont have the cash for it. To add a dashboard widget outside the dashboard area, click and drag the widget icon in the add widget tray, hit F12 and drop it on the desktop.

Ok, thanks I'll give it a try at the Apple store...

So I have to say that while I like the look of Mac OS X, and the Unix underpinnings, the useability, clarity, and consistency of the UI has really taken a hit these last couple of years... did Apple fire all their human factors and UI design folks?

I really like the current finder windows, but the dock and now dashboard are just not all that well thought out...

Edit: I went to the Apple store and tried it... that doesn't work, all it does is start the widget and move it off the Dashboard, er, dock. It still disappears when you click on the desktop, finder or app window. I asked one of the Apple store folks and they confirmed that it can't be done. This relegates the Dashboard to toy status for me.

Was I the ONLY PERSON that didn't know you couldn't use the student discount on Tiger in store? I got up to the register and said I wanted to use my student discount. The employee said there was no student discount on Tiger and that I had to order it on-line to receive said discount.

I would have gladly pre-ordered Tiger to receive my discount but had NO idea that was how it worked.

Please tell me I was not the only person that is a huge Apple fan that somehow missed this policy!

Normally the Mac store will let you use your student discount. But i think for the release party it wasnt allowed so they can make more cash, I bought my iBook G4 at a mac store and they gave me student discount on it as well as the .mac account. During the release party they were giving 10% off discounts, however, these discounts did not go towards a purchase of Tiger. They know everyone there is going to buy Tiger, so they avoid the discounts that can be placed on Tiger.

I wasn't making a big deal about wanting to save money, on the contrary, I'm all for that.
What I said was that at first he was willing to spend over $600 dollars for a mini with Panther, and then he refused to spend them on the mini with *free* Tiger once he heard about the opportunity of a 10% discount besides including Tiger. It just comes to show that the more some people get, the more they demand should be given to them. Greedy...

And I can't believe that people are whining about keychains and T-shirts when you could have gotten a Dual G5 with a $200-$300 discount. I wish I could have gone to pick up a new 20" screen for $720...
I bet people who did buy hardware with their 10% discount were more than happy.

Yes, Tiger will come with all new computer purchases. It probably won't be pre-installed, but there will be a disc (DVD?) in the box for you. This is according to the Apple store employee.

Was about to pick up a 15" SuperDrive PowerBook myself, but was told they weren't doing a 10 percent sale unless it was on your scratcher so I left. Apple lost out on a $2,000+ sale. Might have even walked out with a new 2.3GHz G5 PowerMac as well. I'm taking it as a sign to wait until WWDC or MacWord Paris or....?

I have been holding off for so long I can't wait any longer. I don't really care if Tiger is preinstalled or not, so long as it's in the box.

IF something really good (ie new PowerBooks) turns up at WWDC or Paris Expo then I can always trade it in.

You should have asked an employee if you could get the discount without the card. My scratch card was for a Spotlight keychain, but when I told a clerk I wanted to buy a PowerBook and that I wanted 10% off, he gave it to me. (Got 10% off an Airport Express too!)

Even if they'd told you "no," I'm sure you could've found somebody who wasn't going to use their 10% off scratch card who'd be willing to give it to you.

It never hurts to ask. I did and saved $235 (and change). :)

Actually, I did ask a sales associate if I'd be able to get 10 percent off a PowerBook like at the Panther launch. He said no, that they weren't offering any discounts this time, but if I was a student I'd be able to get that discount via online since they weren't doing edu. discounts in store that night.

I hadn't thought about asking someone for their 10 percent off card though. The place was so packed that I just left.

It seemed that almost everyone had a 10% off one themselves or was buying only Tiger, for which the 10% didn't apply. It took me 5 tries to find somebody who could benefit from it.

Since I had 10% off on any single transaction, I made one BIG purchase. Here's a photo of me leaving with it:

You can take widgets out of dashboard. Open dashboard "F13" or whatever you have it assigned to. Drag out a new widget but don't let go. Push F13 again to hide the widgets and then release the widget on the desktop. Great for calculator since you might want to see the number outside of dashboard. When you re-activate dashboard the escaped widget re joins its kin.

Tiger is really good. People saying it's a minor update are mistaken. Panther was a minor update. Spotlight is the new Finder we've been waiting for. The new previewing stuff for images is amazing. It seems like magic and that is how you know it's good. And I can finally sync my V600 over Bluetooth! :)

Ok, I'll give the dashboard thing yet another try. I didn't get the bit about "but don't let go" the widget in the earlier post describing how to do this.

I'll note that in Andy Ihnatko's MacObserver review he complains about the same thing, and he claims that he's been using dashboard "for months and months." By the way where is dashboard help? When you are in dashboard world there is no help menu... I tried to search for help on this in spotlight but didn't see anything promising.

Even assuming this does work, I don't think it's an overstatement to say that there are some serious unresolved UI issues with dashboard.

For me, Expose was perhaps the most significant UI improvement in mainstream computer OSes of the past decade... it had a significant impact on my productivity. However, I haven't played much with smart folders and I can see that as being something transformative as well.

By the way, what are you referring to when you say "the new previewing stuff for images is amazing"?

So let's get this straight, you walked into a store expecting to get a discount... a discount that is won on scratch cards...and you didn't get one so you're sad.

Not just sad...you blame the company for not giving you a discount. Further, you infer that you would be able to get said handout at a PC retailer on a regular basis. Wait, there's more, you were not given a second card (something you were not entitled to) and therefore feel that the stock price is going to tank.

I don't know about you George, but I'm convinced.

And the elitist exclusive Apple club can continue on its merry way. If Apple doesn't want folks to switch so be it. Bunch of folks wetting themselves over a minor update to an operating system, waiting in lines to pay full price for something they can buy anytime.

For a company that discounts so infrequently, 10% off sound pretty good, whether it's across the board or with a scratch-off promotion. However, I'm not sure how I'd spend the discount in store. If I bought an iPod, I'd want engraving. If I bought a notebook, I'd want a bigger hard drive. If I bought a Mac mini, I'd want Bluetooth. Almost everything I want is only available as a build-to-order configuration, direct from Taiwan.

I'm a little interested in iWork, but I'm waiting for the family pack. By the way, I thought it was interesting, in light of this AppleInsider story (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1043), that the Tiger box includes an iWork trial. I know Apple wants to increase its software revenue, but maybe it should bundle iWork with Macs.

So maybe I'm crazy, but those trailers don't play smoothly.

I have a dual 1.8 G5 with 2.5GB of ram and a RAID 0 array, and the aimee mann and batman begins videos are running something less than 20fps.

my single processor 1.8ghz athlon will upscale DVD to 1920x1080p while applying half a dozen filters, and it holds better frame rates than this. And my G5 usually does better than the athlon does with video. Is this part of the new miracle codec? because I bought quicktime 7 pro and if i'm going to have to close all my (2) running programs to get smooth video...if then...then I want my 30 dollars back.

ugh. Maybe it's just buggy? Do I need a patch or something?

When I say hold on to the widget I mean drag it out of the widget dock and don't let go of the mouse, stay clicked. Hit f12 or whatever key you have setup to access dashboard. Dashboard will go away but the widget will still be held by the clicked mouse. release the mouse and th wideget drops on the desktop. I agree that widgets need some tweaking interface wise. You should be able to CLOSE one without OPENING the widget dock. That makes no sense. I'm sure dashboards will evolve just like everything else.

The image preview stuff that impresses me is the access to slideshows everywhere. To spotlight for images and then be able veiw a contact sheet or full screen slide show. Everything smooth and everything anti-aliased without going to iPhoto.

Hold down option and move the mouse over a widget. The X will appear even if the dock is not open, and you can close the widget.

Plays just fine on my dual 2Ghz G5 system (always at 24fps even when dragging or resizing). What video adapter you have? I have a 6800 GT with 256MB.

Tried both the 1080p and 720p versions.

When I gave my spare 10% off scratcher to somebody in line, it took me few tries to find somebody who could use it. It seemed that almost everyone had a 10% off one themselves or was buying only Tiger, for which the 10% didn't apply. It took me 5 tries to find somebody who could benefit from it.

I wish that I had been in your line Doctor Q. ;) Just as I thought, if Apple had offered the 10% discount the same as Panther from reading above. I think that Apple would have encouraged a lot more sales. Didn't realize till I got home that someone had got the discount just by asking.

Oh, does anyone have an extra of either of these from the Tiger Release Party? If you have an extra one that I could maybe have, that'd be great considering how my apple store only have the sratch tickets and I won an iTunes song

Ok, I'll try that... by they way, how do you keep more than one widget on the desktop? Can you do multiple-selections?

Not sure why user's have to know the distinction between dashboard widgets and normal apps... seem like Apple should have just come up with a new directory extension, e.g., .dsh or .wgt, which packages everything you need for a widget, and then just Do The Right Thing when a user double clicks on it...

For some reason the widgets remind me a bit of something you could do with Sun's NeWS window manager (somthing I came in contact with briefly working on an SGI)... If I remember correctly, you could just cat postscript files to the window manager and it would execute them. Since postscript is a general purpose programming language, you could write little apps in postscript.

no apple store in denmark, but....

our best equivalent -OFFICE LINE- did a great job in copenhagen.

the shop started filling up just before 6 and though there were no lines around the block, the shop was packed.

seemed like lots of tigers were sold and the 30"display was so crowded with people watching tiger demonstrations, one had to wait to get close.

there was food and drinks, tastefuly done, with a bit of clever planning too: tiger prawns and tiger beer. yum!

a nice way to participate in the happy buzz. :)

My friends iMac crapped out the day before the release. We tried to bring it in to the store for some support but were told we would have to wait on (a mile long) line like everyone else and even then there was no guarantee we would be able to get support. I think, in this instance, there could have been some better planning or extra consideration for customers that needed help and couldn't possible care about Tiger cuz their computer doesn't even turn on.

Genius Bar was closed for the event at the Grove. It was set up as more cash registers for sales.

I dunno. Makes sense to me to close it like they did. A big event to promote the launch of something isn't really the best place for resolving computer problems.

I purchased a nice G5 system (dual 2GHz w/20" display) using a 10% scratcher at the Tokyo Ginza store, but the people I was dealing with were quite strict. They weren't giving out any 10% discounts for those without the scratch cards, and strictly no 10% discounts off of AppleCare. They took 10% off for only the products - G5, display, and Tiger family pack. I had to purchase AppleCare at full price. I speak the language natively so there was no lost translation.

Hats off to you if you got the discount, but this tells me that Apple is inconsistent, that everyone should have received the discount...

That's weird that they didn't give you 10% off the AppleCare. I'm wondering if maybe they offered it to me since I didn't ask for it? I didn't know about the discount scratch cards (since I was expecting there to be 10% off everything as it was for Jaguar and Panther), so I just asked what the deal on the discount was and got it. I don't speak Japanese, but the guy who was helping me spoke fluent English. He's been there a while too. He's the same guy that sold me my iBook G4 in Jan. '04.

I wonder if maybe they felt sorry for me? I'd been in line since noon (#5!), but I'd brought a nice folding chair, so it wasn't that bad. One of the other clerks also told me I was the first person to buy a system during the event, so that may have helped. When they let people in I went right to the clerk I recognized and said, "I want to buy a PowerBook" and things just went from there.

I had enough money to get the AppleCare, but passed on it. I can pick it up at Bic Camera some other time and get 10% off there with my point card. :)

Went to the Bellevue, WA store. Agreed that it wasn't all that rousing. Not even as good as last time. But I got to hang out with fellow enthusiasts, and win some free stuff.

For those who didn't get the discount, you weren't trying hard enough or you should have stuck around a bit. There were 10% discount tickets just laying around before it was even 10PM. I got a bunch of iTunes songs (7!), a 10% discount on the Shuffle I bought, and even a free copy of iWork. Of course, I already own iWork. What I needed was a new iMac.

Anyone want to buy an unopened copy of iWork? I'll probably be putting it on eBay later.

Hold down option and move the mouse over a widget. The X will appear even if the dock is not open, and you can close the widget.

So I went to the Apple store again, and that doesn't work... it works in dashboard world, but not in desktop world, which is what I was after.

I finally was able to get one dashboard widget into desktop world. I couldn't figure out a way to carry over multiple widgets.

Hmm, I think they could've waited on dashboard and spent the time on spotlight (which from the ars technica review seems to have its own UI problems). I imagine Apple thought improved search wasn't splashy enough.

As far as closing a widget on the desktop - even though you drag it onto the desktop (and the option thing doesn't put the X to close it), it still shows in widget-space and you can use the Option key trick there.

I think it just depends on the store. I had called the Christiana Mall store Friday morning and talked to the store manager and had him put aside a dual 2.7 and 23" display. He said they weren't allowed to put systems on hold during special events but said he would make an exception. I got there around 7:30 and went straight to the greeter, said there was a system on hold for me, like he had told me to do, and got ushered right up to the register :D I definitely got a lot of dirty looks from people still waiting in line outside!

No, you are not the only one. Here in New Orleans it was a big flop as well.10 people at the most came. The only thing that was offered is to fill out a form for a chance to win an iPod Shuffle. AND I ended up spending more $$$ on more Apple stuff:)

Scratch-off Instant win cards are being handed out at the door of official Apple Stores with prizes including iTunes songs, 10% Off Purchases, iPods and PowerBooks. Discounts are only good for tonight.

A full list of prizes and odds of winning are provided by Apple based on your store here (PDF) (http://images.apple.com/retail/events/tiger/prize_discount_exhibit.pdf).

What they didn't tell you is the prizes were rigged. Employees knew where the winning tickets were...

The reason Apple release parties were more fun in the past is becaue they weren't held at Apple Stores, they were done by resellers who invested more in customer serivce and loyalty. Apple Stores didn't exist a few years ago.

However, Apple has, over the past few years, been competing directly with their own resellers and in many cases putting them right out of business.
This is why launch parties are now boring and lame, not because they didn't give away more free crap.

Frankly, I think Apple Stores have a terrible customer service and return policy, and as a result I only buy my Apple hardware and software from resellers, who often have much better return policies. They also have no restocking fees, which I think is a total scam on Apple's part.

I don't believe that at all. A staff member told my wife and I that were one of there most loyal customer. We were first in line for a second year in a row. All we got was a free song for being a loyal customer. :( A friend of my wife's was fourth in line, he got the 10% discount. He wasn't familiar to the staff. So what happened?

I'm so confused, what's wrong with being possesive about my beloved Mac?

Anyhow, I did not purchase Tiger. I was really torn about this and still am. I am in midst of midterms and finals will be here in two weeks, so I've decicded to hold off. Also, I was thinking that maybe I would just wait for the next OS? I'm still not sure, I just don't like the idea of putting down so much cash for the OS and I will have my student discount until December '06. So I'm wondering if I should wait that long. I think wdlove was trying to suggest that you spell it Mac instead of MAC, since Mac users generally prefer it that way, and also because MAC is an acronym that means something else for network gurus.
