View Full Version : Is it possible to overclock the flat-panel G4 iMac?

Well, is it. How do you go about doing this? Explain. What are the risks involved in doing so? What kind of precautions should one take? Does this void the warranty? Let me know.

Well, as said above, yes, this will void your warranty BUT I believe these new processors are clocked via software.
I hope someone can confirm that the processor in the iMac is the same one I am thinking of.
Software clocking would make life VERY easy BUT the question is, where do you come across software like that???

of course it voids the warranty.
The G4 iMac is already a powerful enough machine. Forget about overclocking, it's not worth it. If you want a little bit of extra speed, buy a powermac.
That's just my opinion.

Ok, if it does void the warranty, then how is anyone ever gonna know?

To be honest, I don't know. I don't know enough about the insides of the iMac and how you would overclock it, but, if you did it...they would know.

Easy, Shrek.
Almost all hardware overclocking requires rearrangement of the mechanics inside your computer. And, for that, you better have some skill. If you mess up just once, or if you overheat your processor, your computer WILL suffer, you warranty WILL become void, and Apple will find out the attempt you made (Apple usually has a look inside the computer to find out what went wrong) and they WILL bust you.

So I guess it's best to wait until after the warranty expires before doing any overclocking, eh?

Yup, but even then, is it realy worth it? You could very easily render your perfectly good mac useless. :(

Why not just put in some more or larger fans to keep things cool? Could it be done?

In a PowerMac maybe, but in an iMac? I can't see that there'd even be enough room.

Dude, it is not the fans. How are you going to put a fan on the CPU in an iMac. Can't be done. Look to overclock Macs require cutting the jumpers on the board, and the using a saudering iron to reposition them.
Now, it does void your warranty, but more important. you do it, and you do it wrong. Guess what? You have a 1500$ doorstop.
it is just not smart. Be happy with what you have, and then buy something new when they are faster.

I have the iMac g4 and it runs really fast, so I see 0 point in overclocking it, b/c if it ain't broke dont' fix it.

a doorstep that is the envy of the entire neighborhood!
seriously though, if you were unsure as to whether overclocking voids your warranty or not.. you probably have no business actually over-clocking it. Search the web, see what type of yield people are getting, but is a boost 100mHz really going to be worth it? I refer you to above posts.. :)

Doubt it, the iMac has a small base b/c it is compact, they'd prob make it even smaller and faster if they could've when it came out. the thing is, overclocking this machine is dangerous, and a mistake could be really expensive. I know someone new here named fenswick, and he says u could fry an egg on it if u overclocked the iMac!

DON'T DO IT!
It's just not worth it.
You don't want to end up posting here from some sorry looking/performing x86 because you blew your beautiful G4 iMac. ;)

Look, I'd like a faster iMac too, but if you don't know what you are doing, it's like putting a magnet to your hard drive, or hitting a flat lcd screen with a sledge hammer.
IN ENGLISH, DON'T DO IT!

To the point, no one has commented on my post yet. I am certain there has been a move AWAY from jumpers to software.... who can back me up and tell us which processors utilise this technology???

I know the G3 Sahara uses software to adjust clock speed.

Yeah, I thought it was definately the iBooks so the iMac G4 is probably still a jumper job

okay, you are right, and i am sorry... it's just if you dont' know what you are doing, obstain from doing it! the only productive part is, if you screw up, apple's stock gets to go up by 0.00000000000000000001 cents from ur purchase of a new iMac G4!

LOL... well, if we buy lots of Apple stock and then convince plenty of people to do it, we will make lots of money and Apple will have more funds to research FAR better computers.
