View Full Version : Is Google Down?

emw
May 7, 2005, 05:57 PM
Anyone else having problems getting to Google? I can get everywhere else I've tried, but with Google I get:

Safari can’t find the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.com/” because it can’t find the server “www.google.com”.

Am I alone?

I even waited awhile to post it... ah, well. Apparently nothing to see here. Wonder what caused it?

Too many lurkers.

Have run a couple of searches. Seems to be A-OK to me...

Disconcerting... can't imagine using another search engine.

Aargh.

www.google.com is referring straight to google.co.uk for me.

But http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en seems to be working fine...

Both Google and Gmail are down here. Noticed it a few mins ago when I tried to check my e-mail. Thought it was just my parent's computer being dumb. Oh well, hopefully no big problems but being down at 7pm on a Sat. seems a little weird.

Wierd. It's up for me, so I wonder if it's not Google specifically, but something to do with DNS servers... but why only Google, unless they've changed IP addresses and it's taking awhile to propagate.

Seems .com is still down. This is really scary. I'm doing some research for a project now and have to resort to yahoo or altavista. I never realized how much they suck before.

I also noticed that it wasnt working for me but I didn't want to post because I though that it was just me.

I mean, google being down?

I don't think I would be able to live without google for 24 hours. I use it for EVERYTHING.

www.google.com is referring straight to google.co.uk for me.Google.com has been doing that for MONTHS for me (going to .co.uk), thought it was something they'd put in place

Yeah, just noticed gmail is down. I'm betting something changed on their end and it has to filter out to everyone's DNS servers.

For those of you that can't get to Google, try http://216.239.57.104

Gmail has been down a while - but I haven't had any trouble getting to Google.

I don't know that it's Google's issue though. Looks like DNS - could be a simple mistake at Google's end, could be an attack on DNS in general or a poisoning attempt... could be almost anything. :D

The link above gets me to Google, but when I type www.google.com in my browser I get directed to SOGO search. WTF?

emw
May 7, 2005, 06:23 PM
That seals it - I definitely think it's a DNS attack/poisoning of some sort. Google isn't down, some people are just having problems finding it.

For me, MRoogle (http://mroogle.yo-momma.net/) works fine, but it probably won't do a search if you can't get to Google.

Google Images is down, too!

Hooollly ****!

This will make headlines!

Edit 1: Google Images is truly down, even if you go the IP route.
Edit 2: Oh, but www.google.com works fine for me.
Edit 3: My DNS servers are from Roadrunner... should I share them?

What ISP is everyone using? I'm with SoCal RoadRunner....

Google being down is likely to mean bigger problems elsewhere online...

It's equivalent to when the BBC news site goes down; you know there must be something major going on somewhere in the world that everyone's trying to find out about. Last time I recall the BBC server being overburdened was on 9/11

Having said that, it's up here. And thanks for the auto-address for the normal .com site. I hate that they redirect me to .co.uk (and they do the same for google maps which drives me potty). If I wanted the UK site, I'd have put it in or put UK into my search terms. One reason why I'm quite happy that the Safari Google link isn't customisable!

I didn't have any DNS servers specified in my network settings. I manually entered the ones you're using, and everything is back to normal.

Some reasonably lucid comments on the Slashdot story on Google's downtime (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/08/133225&tid=95&tid=217&tid=218) state that the redirect issues were simply due to "browser guessing", or something like that. By default browsers will attempt to figure out what you meant to type when you make a typo and the domain doesn't exist (or something like that). These opportunistic companies like Sogo search just take advantage of this by registering a domain name that your browser will guess if you can't get to Google for some reason.

I may have mucked that explanation up - DNS isn't my strong point. :D In any case, you can turn off these "browser guesses" in Firefox/Mozilla (explained in some of the Slashdot comments).

Rumors that the site was hacked began when visitors were reportedly rerouted to SoGoSearch.com.
