View Full Version : How Old Are MacTumors Members?
TyleRomeo

I'm just curious how old everyone is here. I think it would give us a better idea who were talking to at macrumors. I'd like to know who here is in high school and who here is retired, and everyone else is inbetween. Also maybe you guys could post if youre a male or female. I wonder how many members here are females.
To get things started I'm 21 and male.

One of the worst places to misspell anything would be the title.
17
BTW: There were respective threads a long time back for how old everyone here is, and how many women are on the boards. Both were polls, but the women one I'm talking about goes a long while back.
Tumors: Remove them at the "T". :D

Age? that's an easy one. Old enough to be considered an adult, but not old enough to be considered a responsible drunk.;)
Now gender, that's a tough one..........

It blows my mind how times change...we have 14 year-old kids posting here. When I was fourteen, only affluent adults could afford a personal computer....the Apple II still remaining the PC of choice then. If you wanted a computer, you had to learn BASIC.

You know what I don't understand. If Macs are so much easier to use, wouldn't you think that women would flock to them, if not by choice, but by necessity?

it's funny to hear people bash the femmes. i am in the International Baccalaureate program at my high school (www.ibo.org to read about it). it's a very challenging program; 10 of the 12 national merit semifinalists at our school this year are in it (me being one of them). and surprise, the females are (a) more honest than the guys, (b) more involved in extracurricular stuff, (c) generally much more intelligent, and (d) much more numerous than the males in the program.
all this to say, sure, lots of people are dumb. guys just overlook the blatant stupidity they see among their guy friends and fail to overlook that which they see in women, thus leaving the impression on their infinitesimal brains that women are dumb.
rest assured, in my experience, it's just not so. when you enter the truly academic playing field (and no i do not mean JUST specializing in technology or any single field, that doesn't make you smart at all--you have to have much more than that), you will see things differently.
i'm fairly conservative and full of old, outdated values. but you just invite hell-fire from anyone with any sense in his head. and let me be the first to cast a stone. anyone who thinks women are inherently less intelligent than men can go to hell.

Thus was a toughie, but I think I got it somewhat figured out.
I've put it all into three categories to make it a little easier........................for me.;)
Body: 80% male
Techincally I'm a male but I have remarkably smoth skin and a tite little hourglass figure.:D
Mind: 70% female
I get along with my girl friends better than my guy friends so we must have a bit more in common.
I also find that I operate mostly off of emotion rathr than logic.
Spirit: 70% female
I guess that's just how it feels, no real explanation for this one.:)
So I guess I'm a chick then.
Now you see why I'm so confused.:p
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go pluck some eyebrows............

ok, to get philosophical on you... to what extent do you think it is natural for females to let emotion get the best of them?
if you ask me, that is a culture thing, and has much much more to do with people like you expecting as much than with them actually being more emotional.
there are many emotional, tipsy women. that's a given in a planet of 6 billion different people, the majority of which are female. however, there are many stable, easygoing women too.
on the other hand, it's not my experience that men by and large have more "sense" about them, that they reason through all or even many of their actions. sure there are many who do, but there are plenty of men who behave in a manner that you would consider "effeminate." and the bulk group of males is probably in between. they have no common sense and no book smarts.
i don't presume to know a hell of a lot about gender demographics in the world, but i am positive that the simplistic interpretations i have seen here in this thread are very very wrong. you can't just make generalizations like that about such diverse groups of people as men and women.

You got that right.;)
I think you can gereralize, but only to a point.
My experience has been that men are every bit as emotional as women, they're just not quite as in touch with them so they usually don't know how to use them to their advantage.
The advantage of that being that there's more room for logical thinking since emotions are kept at a distance most of the time.
It is culture, but I find that culture evolves from what already exists.:)

next time you try to be general, you might try using general words, like "general," usually," "often," "sometimes," etc.
i would never condemn generalizations (though mine are certainly fairly different from yours because i have different experience), but this

really get on my nerves, facetious or no. they may well be kidding, and i generally don't have a problem with that sort of humor, but... it doesn't go over well online, for me.
the only way you can intake your daily experience of the world is through generalizations. this is how your mind gets numbed to a daily routine. but the very fact that you have to make generalizations ought to make you all the more careful in doing so.

sometimes when one looks at life for four decades, it is always refreshing to see someone outside of the box who does not fit one's generalizations
as a techie who has worked in and around silicon valley, i found other techies of all types (self taught to phd level) to either be drawn to hardware or software...but very, very rarely both with equal fervor...but since i have seen posters who are here on macrumors who are not in the high tech field, i have seen many who are equally interested and adept at both since their non high tech job does not require them to choose or to specialize
i notice in the working world, most people who do the nine to five routine use either pcs or macs...but since i have joined macrumors, i have seen a lot of people who are not yet in the working world so they are very literate at both platforms and like them for their strengths
macrumors has opened up my world to people different from me...still in secondary school or college and not in the working world yet...and computer hobbyists who have the freedom to experiment and brach out in a way that a paid high tech job does not allow with such freedom...having met a lot of techies in the field, i still maintain the best and brightest are the passionate computer geeks still in high school/college and living at home where they have not been kicked in the teeth with kids, mortgage, rent, boss, employees, etc.
imagine what the computer world would have been without youngsters/teens like jobs, woz, gates, allen, ellison, dell, and fanning
i wish more high technology professionals would visit these forums...it would expand their perception of computers, and especially the mac:)
