Apple has posted (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads/poplock/) the latest iPod television advertisement which has been seen on Sportscenter and Saturday Night Live.

The new ad is called "Pop-Lock" and features the song Technologic by Daft Punk (http://www.dailytunes.com/songs/20050515015656.html).

The ad continues with the theme of silhouetted dancers. Last week, Apple released another new iPod ad called Rollerskating (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/05/20050508081339.shtml).

Why don't they advertise their computers as much?

I see no reason why the new iMacs shouldn't be as popular. iPods aren't exactly cheap and are a hit.

Everyone who has seen my iMac has been wowed by it, including me.

It baffles me, the new iMacs are way under rated.

On subject though, I am glad that Apple continues to invest in the success of the iPod.

/People who don't have at least an iMac are missing out though :(

Really, they should advertise the OS. No matter how wonderful the hardware, people who haven't used a Mac don't understand that the key difference is the ease of use and elegance of OS X. Apple should push the user experience, rather than the hardware.

Save your pennies, they are completely worth the investment. Especially the new ones. One more cycle and they will probably get up to 2.3Ghz, if not 2.5.

__________

Really, the ad campaign ought to be more inclusive, or at least feature some other Apple hardware, Apple does have the coolest looking computers on the market. Even 'what you can do with an iPod and Tiger (airport wise)' ad would benefit the company as a whole.

Eh, it's OK I guess. At first I didn't really like the song, but I just have to get used to it. I probably like it just a tad bit more than the rollerskates one (but it's still pretty close), which, IMO, the roller skates sorta took away the focus from the iPod to the skates. But I do like Apple is trying new ways for these silhouette ads regarding the skating one.

ATTENTION APPLE: EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM KNOWS ABOUT THE iPOD AND HOW GREAT IT IS! ADVERTISE YOUR GREAT COMPUTERS AGAIN!

I was recently watching some old apple ads and I came across the G5 ads involving the dude being blown through his entire house and it occured to me that I used to see these ads quite regulary on TV. Get back to the machines!

I disagree with the people that say "Apple needs new ads," because these people are all macheads that get angry when something at Apple is not upgraded within a year or two.

While Apple could use more ads featuring the iMac and mac mini, these iPod ads are doing very well right now. I mean, these silouetted dancers (whose moves only seem to be getting better in terms of syncing with the music) are far better than your mom and dad singing songs playing on their iPod against a white background (remember those?). These ads are uncomplicated, unique, and fresh - just like the iPod.

Shard, when did you submit this? I hate to be a crybaby but I saw this on SportsCenter last night (well, 2 nights ago technically) and submitted right away. Whatever, maybe because I didn't know the song!
I like this one wayyyy better. Relatively ironic choice of song, just listen to the lyrics!

1) They could have used some better Daft Punk, in my opinion.

2) The N.E.R.D. "Rock Star Jason Nevins Remix" was much better and totally underplayed.

3) They need new commercials, be it Mac or iPod, spice it up already! I liked the one with the posters on the wall from last spring. That was a nice change.

LimeiBook86 that was great! I wish Apple would do something like that, and make it time appropriate that way.

I think this new ad is great and in the spirit of the original ads unlike the roller-skate ad. The roller-skate ad was a little too awkward with it's movements - not fluidic enough to communicate having fun. No matter how hard something is, to get the audience going you need to make it look easy!

My favorite so far has been the one with the Jet song - it really made you wanna get up and move. I think this is the genius of these ads that they are not selling the ipod, they are selling the enjoyment of music.

Good to see they can make variations on the original ad which can equal the original incarnations (the roller-skate ad excluded!).

Well, while I think that Apple still needs to focus on the iMac or Mac Mini, and bring out some strong advertisement with these - I have to admit, the theme of advertising that they've got going here is a commercial hit. People entirely link the iPod with these dark characters dancing to brightly coloured backgrounds. It's somthing that a company manufacturing a product such as iRiver doesn't.

Apple is good with image, and these advertisements further enforce that. Damn those earbuds look good!

i like this ad too - the dancers are kinda slow but energetic at the same time. too bad apple uk won't be showing it. i really wanted to see these new ads on tv.

those people complaining about mac ads; it's not like apple only has one marketing department - these ipod ads aren't slowing down a mac ad campaign. as long as the ipod numbers keep on growing, apple isn't going to stop the ipod ads. because they pay off.

im sure when they come up for a great idea for a mac commercial they'll do it.

Was that the single worst pile of @#$%& song ever or what? I had to stop watching the commercial halfway through because the music got on my nerves immediately. First Apple commercial I outrightly hate. Whoever selected that second-rate video game music for it should be fired. Now.

ok:
1. Daft Punks new album: They "boasted" it took them 6 weeks to make, but as The Independent's reviewer commented "I wonder what they were doing for the other 5..."
2. People saying iPod ads are taking away from mac ads are under the same false impression that one is directly affected by the other - in the same way people said "oh no - stop with this iPod nonsense and concentrate on new macs!" - well I think we've got the best iPods and best Macs ever, don't know about you guys...!
3. Ok, I like writing numbered lists but I ran of ideas :(

I may be mistaken, but I believe that's him.it's definitely him, the move where he comes up off of the floor is one of his signature moves. you can also identify him by the design on the side of his shoes throughout the ad.

also the dancing in this vid is all pretty much popping, and no locking. popping somehow got associated with locking and a lot of people call it "poplocking"

A good Ad, nothing new, but still good.
Keeping with the same imagery "grows" the brand, so Apple are doing good.
Something like an iPod is a lot easier to market than a Mac for the reason that it's function is so simple, imagine trying to cram all the features you'd want to talk about of a Mac/OS X into a 30 second timeframe - no easy task!

iPod - Plays music - Enjoy music
Mac/OS X - Spotlight/industrial design/security/speed/widgets/automator/ease of use/airport/wireless kb & m/QT7/H.264/Safari 2 etc.

P.S. That VW ad has to be one of my favorite ads of all time - a really clever idea done really really well. Honda ads are really good too (remember the "Cogs" one, and the "Hate somtin.." one)
Ads that stick in the mind are successful ads, and the iPod ads stick like damn super-glue!

Didn't like the last one, and, again, this one did not change my mind about the whole campaign.

I'm not really "in" to these commercials, in that I haven't followed them religiously or jump up and down when a new one comes out. I think this makes me a pretty average consumer. So to me, they all look the same. I saw this ad last night and figured it was just the same ad again with a lime green background and silhouettes of people moving about.

My point in all this is that I think it is a waste of money for them to produce several commercials that most consumers will mistake as the same commercial. Perhaps it IS time for some commercials featuring OS X, or the Mac Mini, or iBook, or iMac. Show people something that will really hit home with them. Talk about viruses and spyware.

After getting a new Dell laptop from my new company, I've grown to love OS X as a mobile platform even more. This thing had about 20 different items in the system tray, and some stuff I haven't ever figured out. Like, why are there around 3 places that wireless settings are configured? Every time the thing goes to sleep it is like a major effort to get it to come back. It is like booting XP all over again. Then I've got a firewall running, virus protection, and spyware protection.

My point is, if you have something superior you kind of need to let consumers know about it- and I think the time is right. Don't wait until Longhorn comes out. Although, when people see Longhorn....

The ipod adds are getting old, isn't apple innovative? I understand these adds have worked well because people can imagine themselves or someone else being that person. Apple is really beating this horse dead. Its pretty bad when your own following is getting sick of the adds. Keep advertising the iPod, but try to at least show a apple computer in the background in the adds. They should have professional DJs, Video editors, graphic artists, etc. commenting on the unique powerful line up, then have music artists wearing ipods on tour bus's and backstage. Then tie in some sort of connection to the common buyer. They should still keep it simple but focus on something else, besides bright colors flashing with houligans dancing in front of them.

All I have to say, is hello ipod navy (as in old navy adds)

Folks, let's remember that even though some of you diehard Mac users may be over these silhoutette ads, much of the country is just starting to wake up & recognize the brand that Apple has created with these ads. THESE SILHOUETTE ADS HAVE ONLY BEEN RUNNING FOR A YEAR-AND-A-HALF!!! The first one was released on October 16th, 2003. THAT IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD OF ADVERTISING! In fact, it might be a mistake for Apple to EVER stop running these ads. This is the best way to cement these images & the iPod brand in front of non-Mac users' faces as long as possible. These silhouettes ARE the iPod, just as much as Coca-Cola's red-and-white logo is Coke. I mean, the very iPod box itself has these silhouettes on it. As a great example of why you would never want to stop an ad campaign, Maytag has never stopped running their ads about the Maytag repairman and it has become a collective part of our nation's consciousness. It's only been a year-and-a-half, folks! You should be more concerned if Apple STOPPED running these ads!! They NEED these ads to DISTINGUISH themselves from the competition! As soon as they stop running these ads, the iPod might drop from the public's consciousness.

God I'm sick of these iPod ads. They were good for the first year but let's move on already.

Truth be told, I'm getting sick of iPod mania altogether. I'd much rather people be interested in Apple computers and software. Too much of a good thing, I guess. I know, I know...the iPod's been great for Apple, I'm not saying it hasn't.

Windows users are idiots, generally. I can't tell you how many of my slave-to-Windows family and friends need help using iTunes and the iPod. Just yesterday I gave my father-in-law a tutorial on how to create a playlist in iTunes. Most Windows users I know have about 150 songs on their 20GB iPods.

Good point - I, too, feel that Daft Punk's latest offerings have been sub-par, at least when considering what they have the potential to do. Homework is still one of my favorite albums, and in my mind it truly showcases the duo as being not only musicians/DJs/mixers, but as being true "Audio Engineers". I think Apple plans to do that soon.

The iPod ads may have been around for a year or more, but, I still think they are effective. I mean, Ronald McDonald has been around for a LOT longer. The visual branding for iPod is so distinctive, they just want to get the most mileage out of their investment. They could probably use this for at least another year without it getting stale.

I'm telling you. Now that Apple has all this extra money to be throwing around, they need to advertise their Mac line of computers.

It baffles me as to why they haven't pushed this more...unless they are already in the process of doing this. They need some ads that will apeal to the average consumer and not the Apple crowd. The 'switch' ads were okay, but they only were effective with the prosumer crowd.

Apple has to continue advertising iPods as hard as possible. Ever seen an ad for McDonalds or Coke... or Microsoft for that matter? The leader gets taken down fast if they take a break. And music playing phones are becoming commonplace.

But I absolutely agree that Apple has to start advertising both Macs and Mac OS. I don't understand what they are thinking. Every time I show my Mac to someone, they say, "I had no idea... but those are really expensive, right?" Argh!

Howsabout a nice little clip of a Tiger taking down a bunch longhorn cattle? :D

Actually that would be a horrible ad, though Mac fans would be rotfltao. Something that highlights the ease of use, the immense capabilities, the lack of viruses, the amazing integrations, the tons of bundled software which effectively make Macs much cheaper than PCs... the list is so long, I can't understand why they aren't making any Mac ads.

Small (3.2MB) | Medium (7.1MB) | Large (8MB)

Hmmm... why would someone download Medium? With rollerskating (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads/rollerskating/), the difference is even smaller. What up?

(And as far as I'm concerned, all of these ads seem identical. Different songs, different moves. Same ol' same ol'. Yawn. Then again, I think iPods are a complete waste of money, so I guess I'm not the target audience... :p )

At what point do these ads get old? I guess when sales decline.

This Technologic song is incredibly annoying. blech...

Now why get rid of the iPod ads? iPods = $$$ and exposure for Apple. iPods get Apple in the news. iPods get people into Apple stores and Apple.com. Even if the ads annoy you, how is this a bad thing? It seems like I can't open a newspaper or magazine without reading something about Apple. Before the iPods, that was a rare event.

I would like to see more attention brought to OS X, iMacs and the Mac Mini. Even Microshaft is advertising their horrible WinXP. I would like to see ads like Apple used to do: show people how easy it is to work with the iLife apps on a Mac.

This would help me out a great deal since I always find myself explaining those very things to many Mac-curious friends/co-workers who come to me with questions. I have encountered so many of them that have pre-conceived notions, incorrect information, etc., and are truly impressed when I explain to them simple things like "Yes, you can run Office on a Mac". Come on Apple, release some new ads and help me out! ;)

Instead, I'll bet Apple is going to make an ad with dancing silhouettes of iMac G5s.

:D

Let me mention again my earlier suggestion of silhouettes juggling Mac minis... ;)

it's definitely him, the move where he comes up off of the floor is one of his signature moves. you can also identify him by the design on the side of his shoes throughout the ad.

also the dancing in this vid is all pretty much popping, and no locking. popping somehow got associated with locking and a lot of people call it "poplocking"

I'm glad it wasn't just me then! I also thought I recognized the shoes, but I wasn't going to mention it because I wasn't sure. Thanks for confirmation!

Yes, but they should point out to the public that the lifestyle doesn't have to just include iPods - it can include iMacs, iLife, OS X, etc. - there's more to it than just iPods!

exaclty.... that is where I would like to see apple go.

Ghetto crap 24x7.

Daft Punk is ghetto crap? I'm not saying the tune is awesome, but I wouldn't classify it as "ghetto crap"...

It's what the public likes, and I love it. Just because Apple is classy doesn't mean they have to have a bunch of spoiled white kids and wasps dancing around in their ads.

Seriously, I don't understand what's so declassé about iPod ads. I think they exhibit an almost textbook definition of classy minimalism, and they do so in a way that's stylish and youthful and appeals to their target market. And they make you wanna shake it. I can't think of a classier ad that reaches the high school/college crowd.

Perhaps you were referring to the presence of beats and do-rags vs. woodwinds and neckties.

After seeing the ad, I bought the song...
After buying the song, I've listened to it 12x
I think this song uses a very creative method to continue the uniqueness of Daft Punk but perserve the DP "sound"we have been hearing for years.
Apple is able to take this song and communicate through it, more than dancing silhouettes can say.

Anyone else notice in the 4th shot of the DP iPod ad, the shot on a green background that is just of the dancers legs, that there is no iPod in the shot.

Neither hand is holding an iPod, and there is no white ear bud wires.

Are there any other instances other than the U2 ad, of dancers without iPods?

I think this is an editing error.

Did anyone else pick up on subliminal message throughout the ad....

"Upgrade it" seemed to be sung like 3 or 4 times throughout the song.

Conspiracy?

Subliminal? No. The lyrics are in your face. If you miss them then you're probably dead, but what about the rest of the lyrics? Something to the effect of "buy it… break it, fix it, crash it..."

Hmm, I must not be hip enough cause I'm thinkin' this was not a cool move to be puttin' this tune with a piece of hardware. So, what is the average life of an iPod? I was thinking of getting one.

my NEW favourite iPod ad! :D

love the dance moves in this one... much more exciting than the rollerskating... and i also love this music which also happens to be more computer oriented.

"trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it,
drag and drop it, zip - unzip it,
write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
plug it, play it, burn it, rip it"

:D

it would seem that Apple is known by more people as the maker of the iPod than the maker of the Macintosh computer. the iPod has become its bread and butter.

i remember watching the iMac G5 Introduction Video.
"from the makers of iPod....."
What the???

Some day they'll capitalize on their iPod image recognition and translate that to powerful Macintosh marketting, i just wish that day would come sooner than later.

Tiger, iLife, iPod shuffles, and Mac Mini's would seem like something they'd want to advertise just as much as the iPods but it seems they are using the iPod as their core image (haha no pun but that worked!) from which to present to the couch slouching public. And well, it seems to be working.

"Da Funk" was great... now do something different please.
