Today in PE I had my ipod stolen. I had seen this kid eyeing it over the last couple of weeks. So I put it in this pocket in my backpack and I saw him pick up my backpack or w/e (his back was to me I couldnt see). So 5 min later I went and checked and it was gone, and just as I looked up I saw him booking it outta the gym. Ironically the other day he was telling me about how he steals people ipods and then sells them.
:(
I know this is a stupid thread, I just needed to write to get some of my anger out.

Was it engraved? Can you press charges or something, if you saw him? If he know you well enough to tell you he steals things, I'm assuming you know where he lives? I'd confront him about it.

Dude, I'm really sorry.
Personally, I'd beat the...nevermind I don't want to get banned.
I had a very expensive ski jacket stolen from my locker in HS, I know how much it hurts. I hate thieves to this day.

Why don't you talk to the principal. Can't she handle it if it is a school matter.

Unfortunately no it wasnt engraved. And I don't actually know him well. Hes just friends with one of my friends and was hanging out with our group and he wanted to impress us. Bragging about how he makes 200 bucks for every one. So i don't know where he lives.
Tomorrow I will "confront" him thought........ ;)
Yea, I wish, unfortunately hes twice my size :(

Unfortunately even if I go to my counsellor or whoever, there isn't really anything they can do about. I have no proof that he did, he definately wouldnt bring it to school.

Not to rag on you, but why bring anything of value to school that you can not secure?

Did you register it with Apple? If so, and assuming that he's stupid enough to have it in his possession still, it should be a simple enough matter to prove ownership of the device.
I would absolutely sic the cops on his sorry ass. You have evidence enough (you saw him eyeing it, you saw him pick up your backpack) to get the police involved.

Look up your serial number off the Apple website if it was registered. Not to pile on but I am a teacher and I hear stories like this weekly. One of my kids had his PSP stolen last week from his locker. All we could say was sorry. Some kids think stealing is better than the hard work and reward of buying your own.

There is not enough evidence to get the police involved. It would be a matter of he said she said. No one to corroborate anything. At this point its best to cut your losses and move, providing you dont want to take a "violent" way out.

I keep mine either on me, or in my locked brief at all times. Toe easy to steal, and I'd most likely hunt down the mother effer who stole it and kill them and I'm not up for jail time.
I left both my 40GB photo and 20GB iPod at work on the last day of March, got home realized I left them, went back and tore the office apart looking for them. Then my house.
My coworkers thought it would be funny if they hid 800 dollars worth of my gear from me for April Fool's.

I have all that, but thats not what I'm worried about. If I can actually find the iPod I wouldn't have any trouble proving that its mine. I'm just worried that he might have already sold it :( .
My dad gave me some suggestions as to how to confront him. He said to act like its not that much of a big deal to you and stay calm, because it makes you seem like you have authority...idno. He also said to say that he has 24 hours to return it no questions asked, or he will pursue it with the administration and the police.
One thing that I have going for me is that he was expelled from his last school for stealing.

I think it was Tuco in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" who said "I like great big fat men like you. When they fall they make more noise..."
And if you are unsuccessful, you'll probably have speed on your side.
Sorry about your iPod. I worry every day at the gym when I lock it up to take a shower. I won't spin the combo if somebody is nearby and sometimes I'll leave and come back quickly to see if there is any funny business going on. So far so good. But there has been a lot of petty theft at my gym - nalgene bottles, combs, etc., and the clientele are mostly adult males with kids.
Don't you have a liaison officer affiliated with your school? Might be best to start a paper trail. Who knows? The kid could get shaken down in the next day or so and you should be able to ID your iPod based on playlists.
Good luck.

2 years ago I had my $500 20 GB ipod stolen in the P.E. lockerroom. The one day I dont put my bag in my locker it gets stolen. Luckily I got the word out and someone tipped me to who it was. I filed a police report, then told the kid I knew he took it. He said "if you don't get me in trouble I will give it back." I told him "ok". He gave me it back all srachted up missing headphones. He then got suspended for a week and I was asked if I wanted to press charges. I didn't. He could have got a felony easily though. My advice, don't accuse everyone with a ipod. Ask shady people if they know where you can buy a cheap ipod. Word usually spreads fast, judging from the kid telling you he steals them. He is either mentally retarded, or didn't take it. I bet he didn't take it, but he probably knows who did. He probably wont rat on his friend who probably took it, so basically you are screwed. Good luck, I never treated my ipod the same again after I got it back and traded it in for a new one (i had the comp usa deal).

But please, be sensible: do you REALLY need your iPod at school? I remember the new Game Boys being very popular in my HS; they were also stolen often.
I never understood the kids who had to bring the latest and coolest gadgets to School... you're there to learn, remember?
Sorry, I don't want to seem pedantic.
I hope you recover your iPod....
and don't worry, that tool of a meathead will get his due: sooner or later.

Hey, don't worry about it.
I know you probably feel like taking a small stick to his head, but you do need to do the logical thing. He needs to be reported, but in this day and age, the furthest you're going to get for him to be warned.
Anyway, I know what this sort of thing can be like - I was assaulted just the other day, all over a mobile phone. In broad daylight.
The world can be a sinister place. Just watch out for this guy in the future. Sods law works in mysterious ways; you may some day be able to get him back. Nothing big...y'know, maybe that small stick we talked about earlier?

And people got mad at me for suggesting a physical deterrent like coporal punishment in high school.
So again, go beat his ass every week until he gets you your iPod back -- or file a police report: saying you witnessed the theft, and got a confession from him the week before he stole yours.
Of course the beating can land you in trouble also... :(
But, putting his ass in jail is so much fun also.
Since the possible things that can happen can be so much fun if you visit his cellmate and donate to that guys account, and get him a prepaid sub to several gay magazines that get delivered to his house and the next door neighbors house.
Edit: sorry it only works if he is straight. :(

My question is...
If you saw him touching your bookbag in the first place, why didn't you go over immediately and stop him??
I really have no sympathy for people who create the opportunity for scum to steal things. People are going to steal; you have to keep them from having the opportunity to steal. (It's like people who leave their keys in their car and then complain when someone steals it).

The police are there for a reason: To protect the citizenry and their property. Your property has been stolen, you have a suspect, and he had both motive and opportunity.
Call the cops. Get your parents to help if you need to, but file a report and tell them you think you know who did it, and why.

That's horrible!
Definitely call the cops, tell all administrators/teachers/Substitutes ANYONE who will listen that has some power in the school, and try to make as big a stink about it as possible.
At my school, there are usually a rash of thefts at the beginning, for maybe the first six weeks. Then, they die out. We have a theory that the thefts are done by the new students to the school who don't know the mutual respect that we (usually) have for eachother. People don't mess with your instrument (we can just leave our violins/violas/cellos in the hall, with all the other ones..), you could leave your backpack in the commons, come back in a half hour, and it wouldn't be touched.
this year has been different.
I can't count the number of stolen iPods on two hands. Even more wallets have been stolen, and musical instruments have been hidden in practice rooms with the lights turned off. (This happened to my friend.. she couldn't find her violin. It was in a practice room with the light turned off.. even though she NEVER goes into them. It was horrible) If you leave your backpack in the commons, go to the bathroom, it has probably been rifled through.
Sadly, no one has done anything about it, really. There's been no proof (unlike the meathead in this case, who BRAGGED about being such a "big man", stealing iPods and selling them. Disgusting).
The lack of respect for people's belongings makes me sick. I shouldn't have to worry about leaving my Physics textbook on a table in the commons for ten minutes, I shouldn't have to clutch my purse to me at all times, and I shouldn't have to double and triple check my locker before I leave for class.
On a few occasions, I've had to bring my iBook, and more recently, my PowerBook to class to work on a project or to do a presentation. I can honestly say, it scares the living crap out of me. I even take it to the bathroom with me, and I have my serial number memorized, just in case. I'm thinking about getting one of those keychain things that goes off at 120 dBs that goes on your thing, and another keychain that stays on your person, then if they get 20 feet away, or something, it BLASTS. (I shouldn't have to be paranoid, but unfortunately, it's a fact of life. :( )
OK, SORRY-- BACK TO THE iPod!
Make a huge stink. Let everyone know that you are the rightful owner. Copy the serial number on a post-it, keep it in your wallet or memorize it.
I really hope you get your iPod back, and this creep gets his cummupence!
Sorry, stealing things from other people really, REALLY hacks me off.
I had my CD player stolen from me once in 6th grade, and I haven't forgotten about it, 5 years later. *cursing under my breath*

I would get your friend that is friends with him involved. Get a tape recorder and put it on him, and have your friend bring up the subject or have him try to get in on the deal. His confession of what he does should be enough evidence for your case with you seeing him going and picking up your bookbag, his past and history of stealing, and that you heard him say that he steals iPods and sells them. I would get real solid proof before calling the cops. The police will probably investigate it, but a taped confession would end it very fast. Chances are though, you won't get your iPod back, but at least he would have to pay the $299 for the new iPod. I would get it engraved if that is the case. I keep my shuffle with me all the time in my pocket, and I don't dare bring my 20 GB iPod to school. Kinda the point for the shuffle. If it gets stolen, it is cheaper to replace it then my 20 GB iPod. I am sorry about your iPod.

I have a solution:
Say you'll buy it back from him for $200 or w/e. Have the transaction take place at school, make sure he has the iPod. Have your serial number with you. Then when you know he has it notify a teacher, admin., etc. You can prove the iPod is yours with the serial number. Then if there is a problem the school can get the police involved.

I would not do that. I hear from friends in my town that if you threaten a kid at school, the school will call the police because it is harrassment, making people feel uncomfortable, BULLYING (now there is a state law about it in CT) all that kind of crap that no one really cares about.
If you do that you might get in more trouble than you want to be in and it will make the person who stole your iPod happy I would assume.
I don't know if my town is abnormal but they are very strict on "Bullying". A mother of a middle school student told me that a kid got suspended for 5 days because he called another kid illiterate. A student writes a racial comment ( HATE CRIME ) on the wall of a bathroom and gets suspended for two days. A kid punches a kid and he is suspended for 5 days.
I know I'm on a bird walk here a little but I do think if the school let students work there problems out it would probably be better. I do think the intimidation meathod would work but in todays society where everyone must be equal you'll just get yourself into trouble. Maybe thats why the middle school in our town employs 2 psycologists, 4 social workers, and 2 guidence counslers for less than 400 students.

Interesting to see how the parents feel that the kids needed "therapy" after this instead of acknowledging the fact that the kids are bullies and need diversion classes to straighten them out. ;)
But I guess it is a little shocking all that blood their kids will get on their hands, and the bones crunching as they punch their victim... so I can see where the bullies being forced to wear a modern day dunce cap should get teachers fired.

OMG! I have the most amazingly wonderful extraordinary bewildering marvelous miraculous spectacular staggering stupendous heart-stirring spine-tingling stunning, news. I just got my ipod back!!!!!!!
I had gone to the administration and the school liaison officer with close to no hope of getting it back, or being reimbursed being I didn't have sufficient evidence. The most I hoped for was to maybe give him the message that not all of his victims would just sit by and be...victimized (?).
Well, I guess that they pressured him enough to scare him. Today in PE class, he quietly put it back into my bag. I gave him a slight nod of approval and he seemed quite embarrassed.
After, I went back to the administration and told them about what happened. They were almost as surprised as me. They said that they would have to talk about what would be done to him, but I wouldn't have to be involved anymore.
All I can say is, I'm ecstatic. I haven't yet checked to see if my songs are still on it, as the battery is dead. But that is the last thing I care about.

Back when I was in middle/high school, we never had iPods, but if any one of us was caught in class with a portable music playing device it was confiscated from the teacher. Portable CD players were hot items also, there was never a week without someone getting their CD player snatched from some punk.
Do yourself a favor and leave the expensive gadgets at home. You may be more socially astute than the other students, but you're also vulnerable to the scumbags who have no sense of ethics or shame.
Just some advice.

Dude, I do not care about anybody twice my size. I actually learned that being brave can scare more than 20 or 40 people.
Let me tell you a secret...
Everybody on this planet is affraid of doing something to some one else because "you do not know if that person is crazy and can do a crazy thing back to you". And I learned to assume that "crazy person" paper. I mean, in a situation or confrontation the "crazy one" is going to be me! and that mean the dangerous one as well. Is a mater of attitude.
Now, back in school a guy stole some tapes from me and I found them. I went to the Principal and he got spelled.
If you go to that guy and push him like a crazy maniac and yield at him and you get furious (even if you are acting) that guy is going to be scared out of you! I was in highschool too here in the US and forget about how big the guy is, by bragging as you said he just show how weak his selfsteem is and he need aprouval from others. That mean he does not have enough confidence in himself and some one with a bit more confidence can bring him down emotionally very easy.
I am 30 years old and I had many confrontations with National Guards back in Venezuela because of Hugo Chavez, I was arrested and was charge with prohibition to leave the country until the investigation was over. No National Guard touched me a hair because of my attitude even they cought me with a gun shooting at them. I was so clear in my mind that now I am here in the US working freely because I could managed the judge to set me free and retire charges.
So, no stupid kid bigger than me is going to scare me.
Just go and confront him with your mind and be very serious about your actitude and you will get your iPod back. And you better start practice some "heavy diplomacy" because you are going to need it many times in your life.
It is better to get hit by defending your rights that laying down on your knees because some idiot made the fool out of you. You are going to carry that the rest of your life and it sucks big time. Confront him, tell him "you saw him and that he better give you damn iPod back or he would have to watch his back from now on until you get the iPod back".
I said that to a guy once who was picking on me at school and he never did again, actually I gain many friends after that.
Do it! The size is in the brain.

But you see, the guy is affraid himself and weak inside, take that lesson. Many people in life manage that way too, they may seem strong but they are weak. Thake that in consideration as well many people may be very strong too but things are not what they seem to be. Take the control of the situations, be a game player, not a piece.

Great to hear you got it back :)
My iPod was just stolen yesterday in my school cafeteria. In the lunchroom everyone just piles their backpacks in this area around the backpack racks. I left my backpack there with my iPod (which I bought with the money I made working over the summer) and my Bose Headphones (which were my big christmas present from last year) there. I do this everyday, and I've never had a problem with it. However, after lunch when I had a free I was gonna listen to some music and my iPod and headphones were gone. And to make matters worse, I have know idea who took them. Also, I store a lot of stuff on my iPod other than music, and losing that just sucks, too.
The ironic part is that a few friends of mine had their backpacks stolen monday, and when I found this out on tuesday I thought to myself how lucky I was to never have had anything stolen. Then, a few hours later, that changed.
I found out today that one of my best friends had his iPod and headphones stolen from the cafeteria last week... I wish he had told me this before I left my iPod and headphones int he cafeteria...
Anyway, I just hope that whoever is stealing iPods is stupid enough to do it again and get caught... I have my suspicions about one person, but they are pretty much unfounded... But he is the kind of person who would do something like that, so I could be right... He's stolen things in the past but never really gotten in trouble.
But anyhow, I'm glad you got yours back... I hope I'm as lucky with mine!

I'm also glad to hear you got it back.
There's been a rash of thefts at my school recently (a weird thing, as it's a private school where the vast majority of people are extremely well off [except me, XD]), and they finally caught the person responsible.
The person had stolen numerous iPods plus a laptop and cash.
Unluckily, they couldn't recover any of the items, as he had sold them all off for pot money...
But it's good to hear a happy ending to some of these stories :D

:D
So glad you got it back mate; thats a pretty amazing story. But he didn't even have the decency to return it charged hehe.
I remember I used to bring my 12in Powerbook into school :o Then one day I forgot it was in my bag, threw my bag down and it dented in a couple places. Aw well, it spent half an hour with my wee brother and it was all bent back into place. He's a genius with that sorta thing.

It's true that strong on the outside *generally* = weak on the inside.
Hence the gym obsession right here

Thanks for all your words guys. I have definitely learned a lesson about bringing valuables to school. Unless I can think of some protective way to keep it during PE (the only class where its not on me), I don't think I will ever bring it to school again.
freak123, I really hope you get your ipod back. Although you may think its gone forever, thats what I thought and look what happened. You should definitely go talk to the administration and see what they can do.
