Okay, so I've built numerous PCs and always found it great fun to do. I now want to do something more challenging: build a notebook computer. Is this hard to do?
Can someone give some good web sites that give some good info or can someone here give some?
By the way, I'm talking about making a PC notebook, making a mac would be great, but too expensive, and way too hard to do.
P.S. I don't want to build something that I could just go into a store or on a web site and buy, but something my own.
Thank you very much,
Rick.

as a pc tech, just to repair a pc or mac laptop is considered a specialty and is not easy to do
but to build a pc laptop, especially a compact and light one, is almost an impossible task
some things are basically standard like the size of hard drive enclosure, ram, and some video cards...but then you have to get the ports in there, optical drives, floppy, pcmica and make them all fit together perfectly in a puzzle
and then once you do that, assuming they all are compatible with each other and with the operating system, somehow fit it into a case with port holes to match the ports
towers are much more standardized with floppy bay, optical drive bays and motherboard with a lot of extra space to spare
the laptop does not have that luxury and their is little room for mistake in fitting it all together
but what you are embarking on is not impossible, but very, very hard to do and i hope you have the patience to see it through
if you let your laptop be bigger (instead of a compact laptop), you may find your project to be easier
post pictures if you pull it off
ps - i once saw someone take the guts out of a 15" inch crt imac, minus the screen, and combine it with a large 21" inch crt monitor and basically make a 21" crt, beige, all in one imac...amazing!
i saw it on www.woz.org and i hope this amazaing experiment is still there

Yes, almost impossible. If you are Reall skilled you might have a chance to pull it off, but if not you really need to look for a decent company laptop.
Good luck, if you try.

It is not imposible, just very hard to find the bits. You need to search the online computer stores (mainly the specialist ones). I have found some websites that sell the chips, ram, optical drives and hard disks etc. The hard bits to find are the case (which includes display and keyboard) and the motherboard. You could get an old laptop that uses the same enclosure as the current version of that laptop. Then get a current motherboard and put it in.
I have found places that sell Mac motherboards and chips. But none that sell PC. So it should be posible to get a Mac motherboard and put it in a PC case for a cheap Mac. the website is
