Channel levels are NOT very high;
Retailers have been told to "sell through" their current models of iBook & PowerBook already. This update should be relatively soon if Apple hopes to have them in all retailers before Thanksgiving weekend. I think its very possible

Stock levels at Club Mac, which posts inventory levels on the item's page are currently:
800Mhz-271
667Mhz-104
This is down from 460 and 275 respectively, from two weeks ago.

Have to agree, I've been waiting for a new PowerBook G4 to replace my older PowerBook, but even the last update wasn't worth my money. If this is true then I'll be waiting another 6 months...

PUT IN 64 MB VIDEO RAM
HIGHER BUS SPEED
I won't waste my hard earned money on one of those, I rather wait for a speed-bumped 13" WS iBook

I thought the Radeon 9000 is only 64mb of VRAM. Coupled with that 7.4" laptop speculation...I would think this info is false.

I can't see Apple using anything but the new Radeon 9000 in there next Powerbook revision. It is the only laptop card that should be used at this point. Compaq was one of the first...if not the first. It will be in all other high end PC laptops soon... Apple doesn't have a choice really.

There are only a few PC Notebooks with 64MB VRAM...and even fewer with the new mobility radeon 9000...and they are tanks. So have fun. I am waiting for a PC the size of an iBook to have the Radeon 9000 before I buy.

Let me clarify a few things regarding seanyepez at MacNN forums:
1. He initially quoted two independent sources and said he wouldn't have come forward unless they both provided him with the same information, which they apparently did. Then said a third backed up the previous two. Not 4 or 5.
2. He is actually 14 or 15 years old and not in college.
3. He has his email address in his sig file so he's really going to take a beating if he isn't correct at least on an announcement.
For the record I'm extremely skeptical, but until tomorrow rolls around nobody knows what's going to be announced, if anything.
Contradicting sean, someone else in the forum is saying an announcement will be comming the first week of November and the iBook will remain with a G3 processor and the PowerBook G4 will in have a Superdrive but none will have Bluetooth on the motherboard.

I heard Ingram Micro is down to less than 800 (667mhz) and 300 (800mhz) powerbooks. If this is correct, then maybe new models are in route (since Ingram is a major Apple vendor) :D
Unfortunately, there was a whole port strike crisis on the west coast, and maybe these low inventories are due to backups and not due a pending End of Life change

TopGear
Oct 23, 2002, 09:57 AM
Depends on what they're timing it for -- 10 or 11 a.m. Pacific Time is a good guess. Press releases for earnings are different: they're usually announced after the markets close. But if they *do* make an announcement, they'll want to get some bang out of it -- more press, more coverage.

the more i wait around for these jokers in cupertino to get off their asses and service their market with some woody product, the better a nice, used 7 or 800 meg powermac looks as a one or two year holdover until they've settled on a new line of products with more than a ridiculously minimalist incremental speed bump every half-year or so.
i admit that, while i even enjoy the speed and slickness of my old 450 blue and white g3 (although i really need G4 speed for music production anymore), part of the frustration is the comparatively exuberant clock speeds on the intel cpu's. all benefits of the altivec instruction set aside, what objective reasons remain for the clock-speed gaps? i'm not being an ass, i actually would like an informed, non-opinion-laden, non-flaming answer if anyone cares to enlighten.
additional frustration results from the fact that nowadays, even the intro of a new line of powermacs doesn't result in a huge drop in the old line's pricing, like it did when i bought my g3 (a couple weeks after the g4's hit the streets), so the used market is pretty inflated/resilient/whatever. so i'm a cheap bastard looking for a great deal on a powerful computer - don't hate me for that!
faster, please. bring the freakin' 1 gig powerbook already, dammit.
by the way, i know this is a powerbook thread - my point is that before i spend 3-plus large on one, i'll wait a little longer with a holdover desktop if i have to. ;-)

Sherman, specs aren't everything. We just want a machine that is able to do lots of good video editing and MPEG3 creation. The Powerbook is quite capable of it. Naturally we'll get tweaks every 6 months to a year, and that's appreciated...it brings down the price of the older machines and gives those who desire a little more speed the ability to get it. If you need it today, go get it, if you can wait a bit, wait a bit. Note of course that beginning January 2003, new machines made then will no longer be able to boot into Mac OS 9, though will have Classic. So if you need 9, get a machine today, and hope for upgrades later. And start saving for Mac OS X application updates.

Hey Goph,
Fox Mulder or no, I think you're right. There's no way an apostrophe (or anything else) can get in there unless someone got into the code. WHAT it was going to be changed to is pure speculation. A weather report? An announcement of a 1-GHZ PowerBook? You tell me. My Web pages used to get little Xs and Vs in them, from when I was trying to use a keyboard command to cut or paste. Looks like somebody had a little accident... ;)

I want the Radeon 9000 64M, and the Faster Bus/Processor. I want DDR for faster Data speeds between my Drive (which btw should be a 5400RPM 60 Gig for the top end machine!)

Ok, all of the people that are pissed at Apple's method and speed of delivery.
With new models and CPU speed. I would think that it is evident by now that Apple is having a very serious problem with either...
A: CPU manufacturers
B: Building OSX to work at a decent speed with the current crop of cpu's
C: Still manage to maintain profits with large margins and inflated prices
I din't think that Apple wants to do all these things that irritate and frustrate consumers, its just that they have done SO many stupid things in the past that its hard to straighten out all the mistakes and gets things moving right.
So, prepare yourself for more frustration and bewildering events as Apple continues to catapult themselves into oblivion!

Egad...another PC troll, what should I do with them?
Apple is not going to oblivion...people have been predicting its demise since the year they began, and Apple has always surprised people. With the numerous Linux users coming over to the Mac, Apple is having a resurgence in software developers for
its platform like it never has seen before. And that's a Good Thing! Because with developers comes new software, and with new software the reasons for leaving the Mac platform become fewer and far between, and with Microsoft's abhorrant licensing schemes, and God awful security, anyone who is mindful of their digital rights is going to come to either Linux or the Mac. With Linux users shifting to the Mac in droves, it is only a matter of time before those who chose Linux first become Mac users.
