So, I've got an iBook G4 800MHz that I bought back in January of 2004. The specs say that the max RAM is 640MB. What would happen if I put a 1GB stick in? Has anyone tried this? I looked at Crucial.com and the RAM they recommend for the iBook G4 1GHz is only $133.50...
Ever since installing Tiger, I've felt like I needed more RAM--and the laptop is also running ridiculously hot (with fans coming on VERY RARELY)...I'm just lookin' to boost performance a touch....

It may be that the 1GB sticks were not widely available at the time the computer was released so 640MB was listed as the max. I think there is a fair chance that it would work. Worst case scenario is you have to return it and take a small hit for restocking.
As far as your computer heating up, RAM would have little impact on this.

I was thinking the same thing for my sisters iMac 800, but I found that the major RAM companies didn't make the RAM with the right stats. It won't work, as Macs are way picky with RAM...
