Microphone/line in hacks

Alright, being the n00b I am, I bought a headset with analog outputs, thinking the microphone would work with my mac flawlessly, just like everything else. HAHAHAHA! So, I went ahead and tried to find out how to fix the problem, and it turns out I need an iMic or some other sort of preamp that costs money I don't want to spend because the line-in port doesn't expect the low level signals of microphones. So, I was wondering if anyone hacked it so that the computer would expect a signal that low or anything like that through the console or anything, ANY SOLUTION THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE MONEY OR LOUSY SOFTWARE. You can't "hack" an amplifier to suddenly produce much more gain than it was designed for. Sorry. Either spend the dough for an iMic or return the headset.

That's what I was afraid of, but the headset is just so awesome, that I will just go ahead and blow the money on the iMic whenever i get around to it. Thanks for the help.

you can get lucky on eBay and get the iMic cheap.
