Over Achiever

Ok, I'm starting to plan ahead for buying and upgrading my ti-book. I like preformance, and I think that a 5400 rpm HD is good. However, it only comes in the 60 GB variety, which I don't need all the hard space for. So I have a couple choices (so far)...
1. Buy the model that has the 60 GB HD
2. Buy a model that has a 30 GB HD and buy an IBM TravelStar 40GNX 40 GB, 5400 rpm drive for an additional $110. But what can I do with the original 30 GB HD that came with the TI-Book?
3. Buy a firewire HD like the 40 GB MCE Transport Pro (5400 rpm) for an additional $349.
Any thoughts, any experiences with the IBM and MCE drives? Any other recommendations?
So are there 7200 rpm external HD out there? How bulky are they?
How quiet are these drives? My PC laptop makes a lot of clicking noises when its being accessed
