Upgrading/change the BIOS in an old system?

I have a old Gateway system, from 1998, and I'm thinking of flashing the BIOS to a newer one. Does it matter what BIOS I put in? Does it have to be the same one (Award, Phoenix, etc)? Are there any other limitations?

you have to get the BIOS made for your specific model of PC from the gateway website.
