Tax Free weekend is the reason i am buying a powerbook on the 13th instead of going up to NH

Is there anyway someone not living in Texas can get that? :)

I was under the impression that at least in Texas, tax-free does not apply to computers or items over 100$.

yeah, it's basically limited to clothing and such. there's not really anything i need to buy and i find it best to avoid the malls and such on the weekend, so i wont really be taking advantage of it.
list of included items for texas (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A//www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html&ei=YvvzQtElhPyxAdff4Y8O&sig2=wrl4mTTgSxy72HVFw-l-DA)

X"Unlike similar sales in Texas, Missouri, New Mexico, seven other states and the District of Columbia, the Norman sale is not restricted to school supplies or any limit on the amount of purchase. Norman merchants discount prices by at least 8 percent, but still pay back-end state and city taxes"

It'll affect my purchases because I'm not getting within 20 minutes of a mall or major shopping center this weekend. It's not worth my sanity to save 8% on anything.

Unfortunately for those of us in Texas, computers are not eligible items on tax-free weekend.
Each state treats it differently and for some states computers ARE included (e.g. New Mexico, computers < $1000).

I agree with milozauckerman; unless you've got a great reason to shop, it's going to be a ZOO out there!

I live ten minutes from Delaware. When I want something tax-free, I hop in the car. Saved $90 on my PowerBook. Of course I declared it. ;)

We only get one tax free day here in MA :( Rumor has it that next year it will be a weekend :)

Some local businesses are letting customers do post dated checks.. they then ring them in on the tax free day saving you the trip out and lessing the frenzy of customers)... we purchased a living room set, sofa and loveseat by flexsteal (great stuff!). Unfortunately we don't the the goods till after the tax free day but either way it is well worth it.

Yeah, 6% isn't too bad. :D

edit: What does the Apple Online Store base it off of?

We don't get any tax free days either, although we never pay sales tax on clothes. They make up for it with outrageous income tax rates.

That's outrageous. We should pay where we're from. :)
If you buy it at a local store, I assume you would pay state's tax?
What if I had it shipped to my local store and paid there, would I pay less? :D

Here in Vermont we get a tax free weekend in August on the purchase of computer equipment for educational use. Frankly it is bogus and arbitrary. It does not affect my buying pattern at all. I'm not going to wait for many months just to try and hit that special two day window.

He's in Canada. They have a higher tax rate there.

I was interested, until I began checking out (Missouri)'s county observance policies. Only certain counties are participating, and each municipal city within the county has its own set of restrictions. So the interest waned.

Just found that some stores are observing it, while others are not (in the same county). What's that all about?

I was in the "ibook waiting crowd" and when they updated it I knew tax free weekend was coming up, so I waited and placed an order this weekend, tax free.

NC store was very packed most of the weekend, and in Durham the early risers waited hours the first day to buy their computers. It also encouraged me to buy more add-ons at the same time, rather than waiting. I got the wireless keyboard and speakers while I could get them without tax. Otherwise, I probably would have waited and saved the money until I "recovered" from the computer purchase.

How do you find out if your state has a tax free day/weekend??

I live in Ohio and will be going back to school soon, so i was woundering if Ohio had something like this!

Thanks

Having a tax-free weekend here in NC does influence my buying patterns. Last year at this time, I bought a new Sony desktop PC (my main desktop)... this weekend, I bought a PowerBook. It helped that I made about $400 from a garage sale on Saturday... combined with the tax savings ($161 on a $2149 purchase), it made sense for me to go ahead and make the jump.
