i need to format my ipod as ntfs so it can fit a 6gb file on it since FAT32 wont support a file that big. however, if ubuntu linux live cd (amd 64) will read a hfs+ volume, i can use hfs+. ive tried using the disk management utility under windows but it will only do FAT32. any ideas?

Not Possible. At ALL.

You do that, and the iPod wont work at all, since Macs cant read NTFS. The iPod firmware and software will not support NTFS. If you need to copy something thats over 2 GB, split it into pieces using WinRAR, just have it store, and in the box, enter 2 GB.

i only need to format it like that for a few hours, and the file can't be split because its a disk image (id rather not say what) and it needs to be whole....does ubuntu live cd amd64 read hfs+? oh, btw it's a 3g 15gb if it matters.

You can't copy files from your Mac to an NTFS filesystem without an intermediate protocol like FTP, which is of course completely useless with a local hard drive like the iPod. Period. End of story.

If you want to know about the capabilities of Ubuntu LiveCD, you're at the wrong forums for that. I'd suggest using WinRAR or the Mac equivalent (check macupdate.com) to split the file (tar and gzip it first, if RAR doesn't like disk images).

so basically, there's no hope for copying the disk image to the ipod from my winb0x (where it is right now?) i guess ill transfer it to my mac, format my ipod hfs+, then do it...ok, well thanks, everyone.

So you're trying to find a way to install, using the disk image, without burning a DVD? But... you will not be able to boot anything other than an emulated session (VMWare, GuestPC, QEmu, Bochs, etc) from a disk image. You cannot boot, AFAIK, either Windows or Mac computers from a disk image.

So can you say more about what you want to accomplish? Even if you can't put the disk image on the FAT32 iPod because it's too big, you can create a folder and copy all contents to it. There aren't going to be any files inside the Ubuntu distro that are too large for FAT32, even though the image is.

hmm...this guy (http://www.notmike.com/archives/2004/10/crossplatform_i.html) claims to have formatted an ipod as ntfs, albeit a fourth generation one...
