I was wondering who y'all thought was the best. I think they are
all phenomenal singers, but is one of them better then the rest?
I think Mariah Carey is the best out of all three, but I am a sucker
for those high notes. Mariah Carey has the record for the highest
note, in the 1991 perfomance of emotions at the VMA's. I think
Mariah has a voice that is just as good as Whitney, Celine, and
Kelly, but her vocal range is what puts her on top. Not to mention
she isn't annoying like Kelly Clarkson and Celine.

Ms. V

I am talking about Jaguar Wright, since 'Ms. V' felt it was
necessary to proclaim herself the best singer :D:D:D
Ewww. I don't like her voice very much at all. It is like a mix
of Macy Gray/Grey (however she spells it) and a regular voice.
I would be lying if I thought she was half as good as those other
people.
On the other hand, a person who I think has a pretty good voice
and writes really deep lyrics is faith evans.

Faith Evans is alright I guess, she's too poppy for my tastes though.
Jaguar has this nice Philly soul style which I like.
She's has a pretty unique, though traditional, voice, I luv the way she can go from straight up soul to this squeaky girlish, Britney voice.
Great album BTW.
Best song: 'Self Love" 9 minutes of pure and unpolished old school Philly soul, mmmmmmmmmmm
I'm also a huge fan of Res, she's more of an alt/R&B/soul singer though.
But she's still a goddess.http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=160700
But none of them compare to Ms. V of course. http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/veronica/ppphhht.gif

HMmmmmmmmmmm Ms. V... I can't seem to find any of your songs
on Kazaa. Still becoming popular? Well, Mr. Emo is getting
popular too. Emo's 1st hit single will be 'A start at MacRumors' or
something corny like that.

Was that sarcastic? Because I'm hoping it was... Christina
Aguilera??? Reasons why she is not the best singer:
1) Her voice changes dramatically from the high notes to the low
notes.
2) She can't sing and dance at the same time, so she shouldn't
try.
3) She is too skinny. (i just needed another reason, because a
list of 2 reasons just doesn't look good :D )
4) Her voice just isn't that good.
She is such a snob. I can't stand her. Kelly Clarkson has a
flawless voice. I don't see why she shouldn't be on there. Her
voice just is too plain for my liking though. But other then that
her voice is beatiful.

ummmm riiiiiiiight.
kelly clarkson has severe pitch problems. the only power she has is in her chest. she wont have a voice in 20 years if she keeps singing like she does.
christina has gained enough weight to where she looks healthy. singing is NOT about singing and dancing, altho if you have seen her lately she has progressed alot. christina utilizes the whole of her voice with supreme skill. of course the different parts of her voice sound different, thats the nature of the human instrument. she WILL be able to sing in 20 years.

I seriously doubt that Kelly C. won't be able to sing in 20 years.
Christina Aguilera will be dead from catching a disease that she
can't fight off because she doesn't eat any food, and is therefore
very unhealthy. I think the only good thing about christina
aguilera is her face. Everything else about her seems unhealthy.
Kelly Clarkson will most probably still be singing in 20 years.
I have heard that Mariah Carey won't be singing though, because
she sings high notes, and then she talks with a low, raspy voice,
and that is supposedly very bad for you vocal cords. But IMHO
Mariah has the best voice out of anyone mentioned.

...
i'm telling you, kelly c. sings in a ridiculously unhealthy manner. it is extremely detrimental to her vocal chords.
what you say about aguilera is just plain ignorant.
mariah has showed no real signs of vocal deterioration as of yet as far as I have heard, altho if she is indeed talking below her vocal center, it can be very damaging.
please, don't give me opinions based on...what are they based on anyways scem0 ??

My opinions are based on the thoughts that go through my head
after I listen to a particular artist's songs. After listening to
'Dirrty' I don't feel much. I feel like it is just one more meaningless
pop song to add to the rest. It shows barely any vocal talent. I
know that Christina A. has songs that show much more vocal
talent, but I just don't think that there is much for her to show off.
Give me one song by Christina A. that will make me say 'wow'. I
doubt you can find one. Every time I hear a Mariah Carey song I
get amazed at the quality, control, and range of her voice. I can't
say the same for any other singer. Well, I can say that I get
amazed at the horrible quality, control, and range of some singers
nowdays. But, Christina has a good voice, but it isn't unforgetable.
When Christina Aguilera dies (from that disease :D) She isn't
going to be remembered for her voice. She is going to be
remembered for her body. Mariah Carey will be remembered for
her voice. Who knows about Kelly Clarkson.... I don't know
anything about her. I have seen a couple of her performances
and that's it. But I have been listening to Mariah since I was a
child.

My my, this argument has gotten quite fierce! I never knew anyone had such strong allegiances to their favorite female record company puppet.
If I had to choose between Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston, I'd choose the shotgun in the mouth...

How 'bout going old old school with Mahalia Jackson? Beautiful. Otherwise, I'll agree with alex on this one.

now billie holiday I could understand, but she doesn't really fit into
this kind of category.
I just downloaded 'have yourself a merry little christmas' and it
does demonstrate C.A's vocal abilities much better than any other
song by her that I have ever heard. I listened to the first verse,
and I was expecting her to sing the second verse, and when a
man cut in it startled me because I thought she was singing for a
split second. LOL, that made me say 'wow'. I was listening to a
live version, now I am listening to a professionally recorded
version. This one doesn't have the man singing with her. It does
make me think more of her voice, but I still think that Mariah is
much better. Songs by Mariah that show her vocal talent are:
Mariah Carey - Emotions
Mariah Carey - Bliss
Mariah Carey - Heartbreaker (shows mariah can sing pop too)
Mariah Carey - Hero
Mariah Carey - any song except 'loverboy'

first of all, k. clarkson shouldn't even be on the list...she's good but just about every holiday inn lounge in the country has a "good" singer.
whitney was the best of your choices until she self-destructed..such a shame...i doubt her voice will ever recover.
celine is good but theres just nothing "special" about her voice characteristics, timbre etc. pretty whitebread.
mariah has a speck of soul but no real direction. her high notes are about as impressive as sax players who hold notes for 10 minutes--who cares...
if you want amazing pitch and timbre...no one beats kd lang...i'm not a huge fan of all her music..but her control and ability are spectacular.
another good personality voice is jill scott--nice kinda billie holiday sound.
bjork is good...more vocal talent than most people realize.
but no one beats aretha...power, pitch, chops and a big bowl of soul.
everyone else is just a wannabe.:)

First like 3rdpath said, nobody compares to Aretha. They don't call her the Queen of Soul for no reason.
But how can you all forget Janis?
If anybody has a distinctive, soulful voice it's her. She just takes the sound from the deepest parts of her gut and rips it out.
And how about Big Mama Thorton? The lady who first sung the famous hit by Elvis, 'You ain't nothin' but a hound dog', origionally about a gigolo who wouldn't leave a pub.
Fast forward a couple decades and you have my favorite 70's singer, Gladys Knight.
Now for the origional question: Mariah has an alright voice, she's got a good range, but she doesn't know where to take it so it's completely overdone.
Whitney had developed this incredibly full, almost operatic style in her later years before she went down the poop thread.
Celine's voice is so full of cheese it's unbearable and as for Kelly, can't say I've actually heard her sing, I tend to avoid bad Fox summer shows.
Bjork is incredibly underrated in the vocal circles in my opinion and I'm a big fan of the singer in S.P.O.O.K.S, she's doesn't have a quality voice by conventional standards, but it's definately unique which I prefer.
But I still stand by my origional claim of Ms. V. Although she is nothing compared to some of the great singers mentioned above, someday she may be. Hell, maybe sparkleytone could give her a few pointers on her way to the top.http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/veronica/ppphhht.gif

my name isn't sparkleytone, but here is my advice:
Beware of blood-thirsty bunnies (Like christina aguilera)
:D:D:D
I agree that Mariah Carey needs a little direction in her music.
Sometimes it is as if she would like to be a pop star, and at other
times it is as if she would like to be the queen of soul. I like the
soul part of her much more, but she is good at pop too. I really
like her high notes though because she has control over them.
Listen to the song Bliss. The background is high notes.
