Is there any way to play avi's on a Mac? I am a PC user who is switching to a mac, and was just curious, becasue I have a lot of AVI files, and I know Quicktime doesn't play them?

You can get DivX plugins for QuickTime but I've never had much luck with them, what is good however is an app called VLC (Video Lan Client), you can find it on VersionTracker....and Happy Switching :)

Yeah, it's weird that not even Windows Media Player for OS X will play AVI files. What's up with that?

it's a codec thing. it will play in quicktime given you have the corresponding compression codec. they're not all compressed the same way. it'll be trial and error.
the problem isn't with the .avi file type, it's with the half-baked compression engines windows tends to use when creating them. (Indeo video is the biggest culprit, but some of those codecs can be downloaded for quicktime).
