Why name it the 9600...
2003 called, they want their video card name back. For a minute I thought I was in the twilight zone or you were playing around.

Hmm...strange they would call it 9600 Pro. There's already a 9650 available. But based on results from Barefeats ( thanks G5Unit), the 9600 Pro is a bit better. Will Apple make it available for upgrade in their website?

$199. The standard 9600 was cheaper but this Pro had dual-link capabilities and can drive a 30 inch Apple display so that's great. The fact that it works for either the G4 or G5 is even better. There will be a 9800 that works in multiple systems apparently, too.

Anyone know how much faster to render would this be than my 9000 with 64 mb ram?

For $200 it might be worth it (and I could get motion).

I also noticed thet with the 9600 Pro they have released a 9800 Pro to take the place of the two discontinued retail 9800s. It is 4x AGP and 256MB, so G4 users still have an option for a high-performance card - it's getting older, but the 9800 can still satisfay all but the hard-core gamer.

I still think ATI needs to lower Mac-edition prices, but at least they're building cross-platform cards now; I can forsee the time in the nearish future when this becomes the norm.

Overall this 9600 is good for users of the G4 towers, since the dual link DVI port makes it the cheapest card that will run the 30" ACD - and the only one that works on a G4.
