Just wanted to clarify the problem here. Firstly, it is 136GB that is the cut off point and secondly is it 136GB drive or volume? IE, if I get a 180GB drive and make an 80GB partition will I have 1 partition of 80GB and one of 100GB or will I have one of 80GB and one of 56GB???
Thanks

Well how can that be? People have been saying here for AGES that ATA100 can only support up to 136GB.
Is your drive partitioned?

Not partitioned
OSX is why i dont need another card to load the 250gigger
I could pop in a 320 gig into each bay w/o any probs

can you elaborate on what kind of 250GB drive you put in. And you say you didn't partition it and were using apples ATA-100 interface to connect it and not some 3rd party ATA controller.

Maxtor 250gig 5400, got it last week.
299.99 after rebate (price has gone up since then)
No partition, no special card. Ends up at like 233gig after formating.
Jaguar allows for use of +137gig drives on compatible motherboards...ummm...think thas all

hmmm as far as I knew the Maxtor 250GB 5400RPM drive was only availible in a Firewire case and 160MB 7200RPM was the largest internal Maxtor drive out there. Where did you find it? at maxtor or a 3rd party site? and do you have the address cuase thats a great price for that much storage.

Do you know what machines, apart from your MDD, have these boards?
BTW, it is so good to get information from someone that is actually doing the task.

The new MDD PowerMacs are the only ones with the new ATA-100 controller capable of the higher hard drive capacities.

Actually it has 6bays.
2 ATA100
2 ATA66
2 ATA33 (For optical drive but you could run a hard drive in place of.)

ok, you know what im really not buying this whole 250GB Maxtor drive garbage. First of Mephisto has no idea what ATA port he has connected the drives to. I'm not going to believe that you put it below your combo/superdrive. And if you put it in either one of the free ATA-66 slots then it would not register anything higher then 120GB anyway. So your only option was to run it through the second ATA-100 controller. Which you say you haven't.
Actually I scoured the Maxtor website and eventhough they are making drives that are 80GB per platter, the 250GB does only comes in the Firewire version.
I dont buy that comp usa would only have these special drives in the back and ofcourse they are on some special deal for $299. My comp usa just got in the WD 180GB and 160GB drives in. The 160GB cost $300 and the 180GB is $350, so there is no way that anything you say is valid in anyway. Unless you have some pics of the HD installed in one of your ATA33/66 slots. What do you guys think?

Firstly, calm down;
Secondly, now one has said that is would not work;
Thirdly, if you have a lot of drives there is no reason why you could not put it under the superdrive it would just be slow at times on the 33 bus.

That image does not say where you have put the drive. Doesn't the System disk ship on the ATA66??

I was wrong about the 33
I meant to say the 66
In my 33, i have a superdrive and a cdrw
In my 66, I have a 250gig
In my 100, I have a 80gig and a 120gig
I also have a 160gig, but its connected via a 133 card. Im missing a jumper that I'd need to put the 160 in my 66 bay (it needs to be CS, and if i just use the 133card, it can be master)
and I have a firewire ext 80gig

well i'll be dammed... thats pretty good proof for me. Like I said in my 137GB barrier post, im pretty anal about this whole hard drive situation in the new DDR PMs, i spoke to apple repeatedly and they constantly say that 120Gb is as large as you can go unless you add an ata-133 card. So i want to hear possitive success stories so that I can be confident in getting the WD 200GB drive in my ata 100 slot.

I don't know who you spoke with at Apple but there is plenty of documentation on Apples website and in the manuals that come with these new towers that state that they are capable of handling drives in excess of 137GB.

I would have but I don't have time at the moment. If I get a chance I will research it in the morning.

To clarify:
The MDD has:
3 ATA channels (ATA 33, 66, 100)
Support for six drives (2 per ATA channel)
Slots for six drives (2 5.25", 4 3.5")
Additionally, as I read it in my documentation with my MDD, the limitation on drive size (aka the 137GB barrier) is dependent on IDE addressing, not the ATA bus. Therefore, the firmware (or OS) in (at least these machines) has been patched to resolve the addressing issue with big drives, and this patch is not channel dependent. Based on the documentation, the MDD should access fat ass drives on ANY channel. If you have a MDD, rtfm, visit the Apple support forums, and read your technotes.
With 250GB drives, and no optical drives, this means that 1.5TB is now possible in the MDD.
I am unsure, and can't be bothered to research, whether the addressing patch is in firmware, or in the OS, and whether any of this affects machines other than the MDD Pmacs.
As a side note, I see $120GB 7200RPM drives for about $120 all the time, why not buy 4 of these now, for $480, instead of paying a premium for the biggest newest drive? I did, and its lovely...

It's funny that I know that I have read it in more then one place at Apple.com and in the manual but I can no longer find it. Sorry, I guess I was day dreaming. I do know for sure that they are capable of handling drives in excess of 137GB if you do a search around the bulletin boards here and elsewhere you will find people with very large drives installed.

umm according to macworld's January 2003 issue you can't add these new larger drives to the new DDR PMs Let me quote them
"The ATA/66 and ATA/100 connections used in today's Macs support only 28-bit addressing. So before you rush to buy one of these drives for your Power Mac, you'll need to pick up an ATA/133 controller card."

yeah i know i can but whats the point of 160GB drive when im looking for at least a 250GB one. I need something large to house my AIFF files.
Do you have any idea if the new Maxtor drives are both ata/133 and SATA or do you have to pick when you buy the drive?
