View Full Version : Name your computer :)

Hey guys, I have decided on a computer name for my FIRST Mac, a 12" iBook. For you to fully understand why I'm naming it this, let me first tell you my name is Patrick Stewart, yes just like the actor, and no I'm not related to him as far as I can tell anyway. Let me also say that many vessels have been named this through out history. A british ship in the late 1800s had this name, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier is named this, the first prototype of the space shuttle was named this, and of course the first starship from the United Federation of Planets is named this :) Yes thats right, it will be called...
Enterprise
Have you guys ever named your Macs or PCs? If so what did you name them? Feel free to comment on what you think of my idea.

I named my old Windows PC "desk" for sharing purposes. I also named its workgroup "WORKGROUP." :)
I think officially naming a computer is a little overboard... o_O
Do you greet it in the morning? Hello, Enterprise. And do you woo it to sleep? :rolleyes:

I see nothing wrong with naming a computer. If the practice is good for ships and pets, why not for computers? For assorted reasons, it may very well be viewed as a frivolous waste of time according to those who judge such things, but we do find a way to tolerate some of the endless threads that appear before our very eyes here.
Let me think ... oh yes: "My Powerbook can kick your iBook's ass."
The name of the game is tolerance and a means for appreciating the attachment for our computers that makes some want to give the personal touch. Most women would be flattered to have their partner name one after them. One cautionary note, however ... do not - under any circumstances - take it to bed with you. :)

My iBook is named ono-sendai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_brands#Other_products).
My last computer, a Pismo, is called treskjegg (Norwegian for Treebeard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treebeard)). I think it's a nice name for someone old, reliable and still quite powerful, but my girlfriend, who owns it now, dislikes the name, but not enough to bother finding out how to change it... ;)

Mine are called Selune (AMD64/XP), Shar (PBG4/Tiger) and Sharess (PMG4/Panther).
Named after D&D deities. They tend to keep the name even if I replace them. My old 32-bit Athlon desktop, which I sold, was also called Selune.
Some years ago, I used the name Athena for my PC, but only when I had Linux installed on it. Never bothered to change the default name in Windows.
Struggled awhile to find a name for my PM. It was nameless for a while, but I eventually came up with something. There's plenty of names to pick from, but I wanted a name that I liked, and something that was fairly easy to pronounce (not that I say them aloud often, but hey...)

Well, the concept of naming computers has a long tradition in both the Mac and Unix communities. So it isn't that unusual to find Macs with names.
The names of my systems are the following:Milnor (PowerBook Wallstreet)
Euclid (iMac)
Fermi (PowerMac 8100)
Ricci (PowerMac 7500)
Maric (my wife's PowerBook Pismo)
HAL 9500 (Quadra 950)
Phillips (PowerBook Duo 2300c)
Bonnet (Quadra 700)
Feynman (IBM ThinkPad)
Gauss (SGI Indy)
Morse (SGI IRIS Indigo)
Euler (SGI IRIS Indigo)
Archie (Sun SPARCclassic)
Riemann (DEC Celebris)I actually have more systems than that, but those are the ones that are named.

At work we have a convention that Macs get female names, while Linux and Windows boxen get male names. I liked it so I started using it at home too.
My Mac mini is 'vera'.
When I get a PB (when the bus speed increases) it'll be 'torry'.
I suppose the obvious name for a Mactel given this rule and my current naming theme would be 'layne'.

My iMac G5's name is Zeus (GF named it)
My iBook G4's name is Ethel.
My iPod 4th Gen 20 Gig's name is Zimri - which is Hebrew for "My Music"
My iPod Shuffle's name is Baby Pod.
I did have an older iMac G3 that complemented my iBook G4 that was named Fred. I have since upgraded to the G5.
Everyone at school makes fun of me for naming my mac's... but I find that all the mac owners at my school name theirs too.

My G5 is HeyZeus (sounds like "Jesus" in spanish)
My 12" PowerBook is Defiant (like the ship in Deep Space 9)
My old 15" PowerBook was Silent Bob (cuz it was a hella lot quiter than my Dell which it replaced).
The Dell has had different names over time due to reformats. It used to be PowerHouse when I thought the Dell was cool. Now its Locutus (another ST reference).
And my old old desktop PC that I built long ago was Neo Bundy (Matrix and Married with Children reference).
...and my car is Penny. Because I bought her with an insurance check from an accident in my previous car. I didn't pay a penny for her, and that's her name.

My PowerBook is Ethan, just because I like the name. If I get an iPod, it will be Ethan, Jr.
My sister's HP Pavilion is Pavlov.
My friend got an enormous 17"-screened Toshiba Qosimo that barely qualifies as a laptop (I wouldn't be able to stand the size, myself, but I'm SO jealous of the Harmon Kardon speakers, which sound quite amazing for a notebook). He dubbed it Gunther. I think it would funnier to call it Tina.

My old iBook was called Ib - named after my grandmothers cousin...
My pb is called Pok - the nickname of my uncle
Then I have an external disk...
The partition used for backups of pok is called Ding - my cousins nick', son of Pok
The other partition is Xlaus - another cousin of mine, with X instead of K
As you see I name everything after familymembers, making the names fit my machines.

as previously mentioned, Unix admins often name the machines 'cause it makes it easier to admin.
mine were LOTR names like Ruaros, Orthanc, Orcrist, etc for the Unix boxes, and my macs have all been greek or Roman, like hercules (this 15" 1.5pb), icarus, romulus, remus, etc.
I then also named our novell and windows servers after gods, ie Zeus, Thor, etc.
When i did the y2k checks and produced compatibility reports to the CEO at the board meeting, I had a few comments made about the list, but everyone then tried to use the names when they had problems with the servers which made my life much easier (and more fun, too!).

I always name my computer after whatever I happen to be reading about at the time. Thus, my G4 tower is named "Oberon", after a character in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
My linux box is named "Darkstar II", after a prototype spyplane.
I have a Mac IIci running Debian that's named "Potato", which is the name of the Kernel version (imaginitive, eh?)
None of my pre-OS X Macs have names.

While we're on the subject...is it possible to change the computer name is OS X? I'm running Tiger. When doing the initial setup it said that this could not be changed. Please forgive me for being a newbie switcher if this has been discussed before. Did a Google search and came up empty handed.

Might have to press the Edit button and edit there too. Been a while since I changed it, so I don't remember for sure.

Did a Google search and came up empty handed.The computer's name is easy to change, like dubbz has already shown, but what you may be thinking of is the first (admin) user account's shortname. That is more or less impossible to change, since it's used deep down in the system (the user name can be changed, but do not mess with the short name). If you need another account name, make another account (or a clean install)... ;)

My Powermac is called 'Dual 867', unfrivolously.
My mate and his girlfriend both refer to his Powerbook 12" as Mollie, and my girlfriend calls her Powerbook 15" "Allie" as in aluminium.
My iBook is called 'Book' because I don't like to be reminded that it isn't a powerbook.

Guys I reinstalled OS X and forgot how to name my computer.
Help please.
It's not just to keep the whole Futurama theme going.. But it's kind of a security feature. I can check my router's DHCP clients table and see all of the names there. If a name doesn't fit the Futurama theme I know it's an intruding neighbor or something like that.

My brother and I have several apple computers primarily at our house. With them being all networked, we've assigned 'designations' out of necessity to reference them, and thats just sort of become their names.
iMac 333 G3 -> i3 or Bondi ( in conversation we just say it like Bondy ) since she's Bondi Blue
iMac 400 G3 -> i4
iMac 500 G3 -> i5
iMac 800 G4 -> i8
My Powerbook 1.5GHz G4 -------> KPB ( my first name begins with a K )
My Bros Powerbook 1.5GHz G4 -> DPB ( his first name begins with a D )
But the linux servers just go by their function- like "Mail Server", "Audio Server"...
And last, but not least, my sisters PC is known as "crap".

Network names for my machines:
PB 15'' 1.5ghz: Excalibur (it's big, metallic, shiny and gets the job done)
iBook g3 400mhz: TinyTiny (it's tiny and belonged to my girlfriend who is 4'10'' and also calls herself 'tiny')
[was 'Excalibur Junior' formerly - who remembers the GrailQuest series of spoof choose-your-own-adventure mock D&D books?]
B+W PowerMac G3 350mhz - lives in the attic and serves files - 'Bluey'
300GB mobile firewire HD 'Mogadu'
When I was at Edinburgh University about 10 years ago, their servers were called after Scottish islands.
'Flugga' and 'Jura' (often called 'Jugga') - email servers i think.
'Islay' and 'Moray' - Account homes and fileservers.
Suprised I still remember them.. Guess I'm a real hardware geek :)
