How fast will 10.1 run on your iMac?
I hvave the same iMac but with 6MB VRAM and 96MB RAM and can wipe the HD clean for an install.
Would love to have OS X running on it, as its much quieter than my PC.

I'd still recommend at least running Jaguar on such a machine. I have the same kind of iMac, but with 512 MB of RAM, and I run Panther on it.

Honestly, OS X on that will be a complete nightmare. It will crawl. You may want to consider upgrading the hardware first (Your RAM and HD would need to be upgraded at the very least). Having said that, OS X increases in speed as you move up the releases (except for tiger), not decreases, so you should be looking for a copy of Jaguar or Panther (I recommend panther). Anyway, best of luck to you.

Be sure when you do upgrade, to upgrade the firmware first to version 1.2 for the iMac G3 233. Also if you get a larger hard drive, partition it to 8 GB on the first partition, and if you want to use Mac OS 9, when formatting the drive to be sure to install the Mac OS 9 drivers. I wouldn't run less than Mac OS X 10.2 with at least 256 MB of RAM on that iMac. For more on upgrade options, see my FAQ:

I have the 10.1 and Development Tools 10.1 CDs. I don't think I have the original boxes but I'd look for them if you were interested in buying. PM me if you want.

I had 10.0, if I recall, no DVD playback and **** was all over the place in terms of bugginess.
10.1 wasnt much better.

Its true. 10.1 was a free upgrade for users of 10.0 though. I wouldn't buy anything less then 10.1, unless it was 10.0 bundled with the 10.1 upgrade disk.
That being said, I have both if you haven't found yourself a copy yet.

Panther runs fine on old 233 iMacs. Also on 266 iMacs. Issue is hard drive space and memory. Have two friends with a new 80gig hds on both (partitioned) with 384mbs. They don't need speed, but do love their macs. Still have the 2001 10x discs, but maybe panther is theway to go.

The original 10.0 and 10.1 disks are starting to reach collectable status, so they are becoming rarer and harder to get people to part with.
As for having a usable system from 10.0/10.1, 10.1.5 had reached a pretty good degree of refinement... but 10.2 is usually where I start people off with Mac OS X (everything seems a little blurry in 10.0/10.1 to me, and the first real speed improvements for older systems came from 10.2).
