I took a quicktime encoded video-9 megs and exported the same size to mpeg4 and got one 104 meg file. I thought that I would get a much smaller file- any answers?

2 issues here.
MPEG4 is simply a codec and can create as large or small a file as you want. It depends on the bitrate.
Second, you are compressing a previously compressed file. The quicktime you have you are converting to an MPEG4. You'll get better results if you start with the raw data.
