Ok, assume stupidity - I downloaded it and tried it, but it wouldn't work. What do I need to do?

this has to be run from terminal.

you navigate to the directory you have it, type "./ASCIIMoviePlayer <name of file>"

There are many "ways" to acquire such things. My friends had the first LOTR 6 months before the release. It was missing a few scenes but what do you expect.
