activity monitor memory

i have 512mb of ram on my powerbook and i am running itunes, ichat, and safari...and according to activity monitor i have 5.6mb of free syst memory....im probably going to upgrade to 1gb soon, but was just wondering how much i should have to be ''healthy''.....theres about 85mb "wired" 210mb "active" 205 "inactive" 5 free and 6.04gb of VM

take a look at the number of pageouts you have, high numbers means you could go with more RAM. Currently with my G5 i have 0 pageouts on 1.25GB and am upgrading to 2GB.

On my powerbook i have over 24 thousand pageouts which isn't that bad

It isn't that bad,

i reccomend, check out the inactive memory... if you have enough of that free, than you're ok.... inactive mem is like memory alocated by a program, but not in use -any more-

So as long as that's reasanable ok, you're safe...

I can't really say what is reasable, since it depends on your programs' needs

Sure you would, but if it's enough to justify the costs, that's up to you....

My best guess is, you will notice a performance increase, but in my personal experience, it will be no more that a 10% speed feeling

You wouldn't see a speed difference at all if you don't multitask. But when you're doing a lot of things, or working on large files in big programs, then yes, the RAM will help a lot.

It also saves that HD a bit of work and makes it last longer, as well as uses up less power on battery. Your PB will also produce less heat. However, all of these benefits are quite minor considering the price you need to pay for a 1GB stick of RAM for a 12" iBook or Powerbook. For a 15" PB, getting another 512MB stick of RAM would be cheap and great. :)

That is bad, but it'll depend on your uptime.

Go into TERMINAL and type "uptime" without the quotation marks. That'll show you how long your computer has been on.

Go into TERMINAL again and type (or copy and paste ;) ):

ioreg -l | grep -i IOBatteryInfo

to check your PageOuts. Activity Monitor uses too many resources for a program meant to track your resource usage. :p PageIns aren't bad. Your computer needs to do that.
