Because of our overloading of our servers, we are being forced to extract our non-active AIM users. Because this is a free service, AOL has exceeded the budget for the AIM service. We are asking that you send this exact message to 20 other AIM users to ensure us that you're an active AIM user. Our system tracking devise will pick up this message to keep you on our active list. You have 72 hours to complete this task or your service will be cancelled immediately. Starting October 9, 2005, we will be charging a small fee for registering of a screen name for AIM. Thank you for your time and for using AOL or AIM

I just got this mesage from a friend. Is it legit?

This is the reason I don't use AIM anymore.
(Yes, a teenager who doesn't rely his life on AIM)

yup, all big companies and professional entities use the chain letter approach to pass important messages around. Its the most reliable and reputable system in the world and ever invested, please don't let it down.

come on, lets also be clear here, you have to be ONLINE AND ACTIVE TO get the message, the premise itself is riduclous.

if it were to be a message from AOL it would say something like AIMSystem: blah blah blah when you sign on.

They'll want your credit card number next to start "charging you for your AIM service." Come on, if you can't tell thats a load of crap, I'm worried.

"Our system tracking devise will pick up this message to keep you on our active list. "

devise is usually used as a verb and does not mean device which is the noun.

Of course, the spelling mistake doesn't prove anything as we all know that those at AOL cannot spell! :D

If their system tracking device picks that up then it is an invasion of privacy because they are reading all of your IMs (or at least scanning them).

No way it is true, they would email you and tell you to log into their website or something if they were doing something stupid like that, although most likely they would just notify you that if you don't log in every so often they will delete the account, like hotmail does.

I love getting those virus messages on MSN, sending "photo_1.jpg.exe" to me now. :) I just have to laugh.

Why don't you ask your friend?

Wow... Honestly, if you thought it was real, you need... Uhh... I dunno. But you maybe shouldn't be allowed to use AIM.

After a second read-though of that "AOL Message," I'm laughing at how poorly it's written. If anything, the "send to 20 users" should give it away.

Yeah I just got the exact same message word for word from a friend. How would they expect me to tell 20 AIM users if I only have 12 on my buddy list? This is defiantly fake. A hoax.
