View Full Version : Your uptime?

I'm checking my uptime from time to time, dunno why, but it's fun when I think that just a little less than month ago I had to start the windows machine every single time I used it and then shut it down. And all the silly restarts & stuff, too. This iBook was last time restarted when I updated some program, iPhoto wasn't it?
Just open your console, write "uptime" and copy-paste your uptime!
Mine says currently:
up 8 days, 1:03, 2 users, load averages: 0.13 0.32 0.83
What are load averages, btw?

These uptime threads tend too get closed/wastelanded pretty quickly, I'm afraid...
But I think I'm able to answer this one:What are load averages, btw?On Unix and Unix-like systems the load average is generally given as three scalar numbers, representing the average number of processes ready to run in the last one, five and fifteen minutes. (Note: On Linux – and possibly other, similar Unix variants – one should divide the load average as reported by the uptime or top commands by the number of CPUs before comparing to load averages for any other system. That's because a multi-processor system has a number of processors to select from among the runnable processes. In some systems the number of CPUs is pre-factored into the load average reporting).Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Load_%28computing%29) is your friend... ;)

My uptime is 20 days according to the miniStat Uptime widget. It doesn't tell me the hours or seconds or whatever, but just the number of days is good enough for me.
I remember back in college, I was amazed when my Windows 98 computer would get to 3 days. I realize that computers in general have come a long way since then, but 20 days with 15 programs on my cmd-tab switchie thingy is darn good!

10 Days, 19 hours and 58 minutes and I've had it for 10 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes. :p
I was expecting people to be like "4 months, 2 weeks and a day"
These seem low. ;)

I'm at 2 days right now, but I don't remember restarting!!
Does it get reset when someone does that "sudo weekly" daily monthly thing?
I forget the exact command, but the genius did it to me 2 days ago...
punk!

I just read the OP again and it said to use the console. I've opened the console, but where do I type in "uptime?"
EDIT: Using Terminal, I got..
tobe1st$ uptime
18:36 up 20 days, 1:01, 2 users, load averages: 0.26 0.32 0.28

hmm... 16 threads about ones uptime (at least from a title search). That's even more than there are threads about Keira Knightly!

It's only been on for maybe 5 hours. I shut my computer off every night to conserve energy.

Sleep is your friend. It uses hardly any electricity.
Mine is only 20 hours right now, I just ordered memory and got 2 bad sticks so I've been troubleshooting. Since I installed Tiger and the Uptime Widget, my record is 25 days, 7 hours, 20 minutes.

8 Days 1 Hour and 48 minutes.
My record was 29 days way back in the days of 10.3.5. Too much moving around to give it a run for it's money.....until now.

at my mates computer shop (Rio Systems) they have a PC thats been running for just too long. i think its called the Bumble Bee. its a small PC with half its casing missing, its orange and dangerously dusty but its been running since I was doing work experience there 4 years ago. no monitor, no inputs, no speakers. its just there.
though it might be some kind of file server...

I consciously try to avoid unnecessary shutdowns, since Unixes were originally designed for mahines that were never shut down.
And because of that design a good practical reason appears: most unix boxes run automatical system maintenance tasks between 3.00 & 5.00.
So shutting down your mac for a night might actually slow your machine on a long run. I use sleep, as restarting computer eats more power than sleep of a few hours.
