I highly doubt M$ will be able to enforce the patent in the broad sense that many of us our thinking; clearly the concept of double clicking was around before Microsoft.

Where are you Doug Englebart? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Engelbart)

That's just the nature of business. Managers of a company has an obligation to increase the value of a company anyway they can (within the law). I don't blame them for trying, I blame the patent office for granting it.

I've already received patents for exhaling and holding your breath. Perhaps we could work out an arrangement.... ;)

And, from experience, I can tell you that it is possible to patent virtually anything, esp. in terms of software, even if something almost exactly identical is already out there.

Sorry, I can demonstrate prior art on that one. It's called breathing™ and includes another patented process of mine called inhaling™.

Sorry everyone, I've patented conception and life, of which breathing is a function. I'll be PM-ing you all for contact information to which I can send invoices.

BTW - I've patented invoices, too. ;)

What is really bad is that Microsoft isn't the only one applying for crazy patents. The US Patent Office needs an overhaul.

The problem isn't Microsoft. They are creating patents to protect.

There are TONS, of small firms that consist of a person, a set of broad patents, and a team of lawyers. Theirs goal, patents everything. Its too the point were the big companies are saying enough and patenting everything. Of course big companies do this too, but in this day you have to patent everything you do otherwise someone else will.

Basically, there are tons of leechers out there that will patents say.... invision a device that will light a room, and give semi-description on how it would be used... "in side" and they get a patents, they do not proceed to attempt to build it. Then you have some edison type of person that will invision that you can use electricity to make a small filiment glow inside of a bulb, and actually make it work, and he's in infringment.

In the end... the Science Fiction author who patents everything in his books wins.

Do you know who has the patent for sight? I have the patent for masturbation and am interested in a cross-patent license as I'm going blind.

The patent office doesn't care. They get money for every patent filed. And then more money to maintain the patent rights every year.
