Repair Permissions w/o Reboot

I just did this and it works just fine.

All you have to do is log into your computer as the root user. Run the disk utility and repair permissions. Easy, doesnt take any longer, and no reboot required. I did this because I was having trouble with things that required authentication and I had to log in as root to install stuff. Now its all fine.

wow, thanks for the tip. i usually boot from the cd about once a week to repair permissions (they seem to screw up all the time for some reason). this will save me a lot of reboots. i suppose that just using root all the time would remedy the problem as well, but i'm not sure if i trust myself, as trash happy as i am.

heh, theres a reason i said log out and in as root. that reason is...i hardly ever log in as root. just a really dangerous practice.

Didn't Apple make a speical utility for that, that worked in Mac OS 10.1?
