i hate to admit it, but the time of year i hate the most is the holidays starting at thanksgiving and ending at the the new year

my favorite day of the year is january 2nd...that's when all this capitalistic frenzy dies down and things get back to normal

more people commit suicide, drink, and do drugs in this five week period of the year...it reminds many of how much they might not have or how badly they get along with some relatives

i think buying a present for a poverty stricken child is something one can do to lift the spirits of the child and the giver

making amends with a relative one does not get along with could also be a good endeavor

inviting a lonely person to thanksgiving dinner is another idea

every year i try to beat the stress and depression this season can bring and maybe one day i will learn to like the holidays:rolleyes:

if i can get over my blues and anguish over the holiday seasons every year, then i don't think the whole intensity will irritate me

some people just seem to love this time of year and they must have something really good going or be able to enjoy the rush rush of it all:)

I enjoy the holidays - its a short month for me, my company gives us the week between Christmas and New Years off!, lots of parties and spending time with friends and familly. And if you don't like the capitalistic side of the month, well, you can do things to avoid it. I don't like going to stores/malls during anytime of the year, but the whole online buying thinkg is great for getting exactly what want and not having to deal with crowds.

since i have my own company, or small businesses, i should give myself the time off from thanksgiving to new years

maybe i can work saturdays and overtime from june thru mid-november and that way, i can pull off a european style 4 week vacation

my brother is a european travel agent and i think he gets four weeks off to travel europe but a lot of that is work related...low pay but the greatest perks in the universe...free flights for himself and one to two friends, food, hotels, and major discounts everywhere in the world

it's a great job if traveling is your passion

As Jim Braude, 96.9 FM Talk says, "We Americans deserve 4 weeks off a year. It is after all up to business owners."

For myself I focus on the real reason for Christmas, Jesus Christ. I'm volunteering with "Angel Tree" a Christian organization to assist children of prisoners. I made phone calls to the mother/guardian of the children to find out what piece of clothing & a toy that the child would like to have. During the phone call they were very appreciative, gave me a feeling of satisfaction. Members of my Church will purchase the gifts. Then on Saturday 14 December were having a party for the children food, music, crafts, telling of a story, & best of all for the kids passing out the gifts! :)

jesus was the original reason for the season and i think the western world thinks christmas as some shopping frenzy to max out credit cards

he was actually possibly born in or around april...but that's ok and after years of going to church as a kid, i didn't find out jesus was jewish until i was well into my 20s

i thought he just lived in the holy lands...he he

i am planning to make my next charity jews for jesus...they have a good balance between yeshua/g-d and the christian new testament theology...now that i am older, i prefer the traditionalist approach to christianity and i no longer consider mainline protestant churches or the catholic church vowed enemies of my democratic party/liberals...but then again, i am not longer a hippie with a haircut

politics makes strange bedfellows

and so does religion

i kind of look more like someone who would fit in a service with organs and stained glass windows than a post summer of love, new age-like born again fellowship in the redwoods...all types of worship are precious and thank god for the variety:D

Very good wdlove. My Sunday school class is helping four families with utility payments, clothes and toys this December. I too try to look past all the hype and tunnel down to what it all means....Jesus and giving. I have three small boys..7, 5, 2 and that makes it a little magical for me also. Try this. At Christmas have a birthday cake for the baby Jesus. We have had that tradition since the birth of my first child. These are the things that make the Holidays special. If not for that, it would be a huge headache filled with materialistic greed and overindulgence. Just my 2 cents. I love Christmas for what it is, not what we have made it out to be.

Too much materialism, too many obligations to fill your relatives' need for material junk. Yes, for some religions this is a holy time, but since when does a holy time need the media play gift certificates? As for thanksgiving, why do we celebrate it so? Columbus made a mistake, and killed many native americans while doing so? Is it right to celebrate this?

Columbus has nothing to do with Thanksgiving. He "discovered" America, but he is not the reason we celebrate this time of November. The holiday originates from the Pilgrims who came to America to escape religious persecution, who encountered difficult living conditions and were able to survive due to the help they received from the Native Americans.

It's a time for giving thanks for the blessings in your life: friends and family, health, etc.

A debate on Columbus Day would be appropriate for a different thread.

Its a time for goodwill to all men. My hope is that materialism won't be a major factor. Should be a time of joy. Christians & Jews have this time of year as a solem time to refect, gift giving is a part of both. Its better to give than recieve!

A time to focus on family & give thanks. Hopefully Scrooge won't showup.

Yes, I'm aware that people of all color celebrate this time of year. Its not race related very much integrated. Muslims have Arabs & black. Kwanzaa is mainly black. Its a time of joy and the dream of peace on Earth! :)

Bah humbug! I can't stand it when the ads for christmas cds start coming out in September. Sets my blood to boil. I think our country needs a comercialism-enema. Problem is I don't know where to buy one.
