Er... how about Age Of Empires? Or is that too different from Age Of Empires...

Check these links for reviews of chess games. They've come out in the last year or so.

As far as the RTS games, it doesn't get a lot better than Age of Empires in my opinion. You could get Star Wars Battlegrounds and the expansion pack. It's just like Age of Empires with a Star Wars theme. The best RTS that has come out recently for Mac is Rise of Nations. It's great. Better graphics and a little less on the hunting gathering stuff than Age of Empires.

The newest version of AOE isn't available on the Mac. Which version would that be? Far as I remember, Age Of Empires 3 isn't out yet on any platform

Also, is there any good real-time-strategy game for the Mac that is similar to Age of Empires?
How about Age of Mythology?

Every time I hear someone praise Age of Empires, I wonder if they have played Starcraft or similar.

For chess, try Chessmaster 9000 (http://www.feralinteractive.com/?game=chessmaster9k&language=english§ion=). Really excellent tutorials.

I praise AoE 2 all the time, it's my all time favorite. Starcraft is a classic game also, but it's no Age of Empire II. :D

I still play AoE 2 (pc). I love that game! And it's so much better playing with other people. Unfortunately for Mac players, it might be harder to find other players.

Mind you, I did enjoy Age of Empires II, but I still haven't gotten around to playing the expansion yet, while I played StarCraft and Brood Wars incessently for months....
