View Full Version : What movie would you like to see a sequel to that never had one?
Mr. Anderson

I was just watching the Mask with Jim Carey the other night and realized it was a pretty funny movie and wondered why a sequel wasn't ever made. I think that it would have had great potential.
Anyone else got any?

Sometimes you can't make a sequel no matter how popular the movie, i.e. Titanic

boondock saints. if you haven't heard of it I'm not surprised. It was one of those straight to video gems. Honestly it's probably one of the best movies i've ever seen. If you can find it rent it or buy it. You won't be dissappointed. i think that could have the potential for a sequel. I heard rumors recently of them making a sequel so who knows maybe i'll get my wish

Battle Field Earth is arguably the worst Movie ever made.. but I think every one should see it ... just so you know what a really bad movie is all about. John Travolta planned to Make 2 more of them and even produce and Back them with is own cash (no one else would). The movies are baised on his religion so... he takes bad movie making very personal...
... I cant wait till they come out... if they ever do

Ha, yep, this would go under the other catagory of movies that shouldn't have had a sequel made, although, technically it hasn't. That would be a disaster if he did back it with his own money since the cost for production on a scifi movie is huge. You know the status of this and why would you want to see a sequel, I couldn't even watch all of the first one.

the movie pearl harbor had its prequel (historically) - the battle of britain...which convinced some in the us to wage war against the axis powers
and then of course there was pearl harbor
and then there was the immediate answer to an attack on the us naval base - by attacking tokyo with doolittle's raiders
unfortunately, it made this movie too long and not the hit the producers thought it would be
titanic was too long in my opinion but it held its audiences' attention and made a billion+
overall, titanic was a little too sappy for me

Looking at the cast, I don't think they could afford to make a sequel and keep it low budget enough to match the first one!!!!

My understanding is Macrumors does not condone the use of certain words.
See the following thread. Shrek had a similar post deleted for using that word. I am sure you meant no disrespect. I used the word "Oriental" for years, not knowing that it was considered offensive.

Actually the sequel was made but it was not a sequel. The movie "Big Trouble in Little China" was actually being written as the sequel to Buckaroo Bonzai but none of the original cast showed any interest. Facing the prospect of having to write in all new people, the writers just turned it into a stand alone movie. I personally don't think it mattered much.

The book itself is not the religion.. but its loosely related... its kind of a Bible story.. not really the core of Religion.

Dec 9, 2002, 03:46 PM
I didn't know the book was loosely based on anything, but I'll take your word for it. It does kinda make sense now why everybody thinks he's a wacko. Fine book, but as a religion I'd demand my money back.
I guess people just got too grossed out by Van Wilder. I laughed my ass off, however.
And aren't they up to about Land Before Time part MCMXCVII? I know there's at least six, maybe as many as eight.
And Breakfast Club: Monday Morning could be really good. Two caveats: The script would have to be excellent. I wouldn't trust anybody to do it justice, and second, how could you cast it? You can't possibly beat the brat pack, they were perfect for that movie.

It's gotta make you laugh - Matthew Broderick's got such a timeless face (timeless = BABY...) that even now he could reprise the role of Ferris...
HA!
But anyway - I'd really like to see Alien Vs. Predator. I knew Orion Pictures filmed it, but when Orion went bust, the film got locked up in a vault somewhere. I've read a version of the script, and it's bloody good. And if you look closely in Predator 2, you'll see - when one of the Predators is pressure-cooking a skull in its trophy room - an Alien skull...
I'd also like to see a (half-decent) Star Wars sequel made...

The original movie had so much potential - one reason it became a series, but it had some problems. Its not exactly on the best of all time scifi list.

I'm holding out hope that what I've heard about the sequel to leprechaun 5 are true. If they are, any time now Leprechaun 6 will be out (straight to video of course). Leprechaun Back in the Hood. Hilarious stuff. Funnily enough it may even be the closest to a true sequel of any of the Leprechaun movies (the 5th installatment was Leprechaun in the Hood, starring Ice T), since this first 5 have absolutely nothing to do with each other, other than the Leprechaun (played by Warwick Davis of willow and star wars fame).

she wanted to kill to avenge her brother's death, and that was satisfied at the end of the movie. she didn't get too much training and didn't seem to be getting any more at the end of the movie.
so i just think it would be a cool idea, but without jean reno, i don't know if it would be any good. natalie's recent roles in SW have sucked beyond belief, but that's not her fault. some of her other movies showed promise of a good acting career that have yet to be capitalized upon.
i think she could pull it off, but the first movie revolved around a relationship that ended, so a sequel would have to go in a totally new direction. she looked good with a gun in léon and star wars, though. :)

Seriously though, I think sequels shoild be banned. It ought to be a federal crime to even write a script treatment considering a sequel.
The sequel is the ultimate cop out. It's the studios saying; "Gee, we can't think of anything creative right now. let's just do what we did last time".

There are a few sequals out there that were better then the originals. Personally I like the first three Star Wars and any one who wants to take away any of the Indiana Jones movies from me is going to get shot. Oh and the same for Bond.

3. Empire Strikes Back
4. Max Max 2: The Road Warrior
5. Terminator 2
6. Godfather 2
7. Aliens
8. Friday the 13th, Part 2 (Jason wasn't the killer until this one)
9. A Shot In the Dark (Pink Panther Sequel)
10. Star Trek II: Khan (In fact any even star trek movie is better than that first one, and I don't even like star trek).
11. For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
12. Silence of the Lambs (if you count Manhunter)
13. GoldFinger
That is all I can think of right now.:D

Some stories just need more than one movie - in the case of Lord of the Rings, StarWars, Indiana Jones, *not* Highlander ;)
And if a certain subject/theme is good enough why not? Just making a sequel for making money isn't the best way, but that's the bottom line in most cases. And there have been plenty of sequels that have been great. Austin Powers #3 was fantastic.

If you've seen 2001 recently you might be surprised. Having been made so long ago it was ground breaking for the time, but today the space scenes and classical music 'hits' as the soundtrack are just too slow and cheezy. 2061 was much better and 3001 would be a good movie - I hope they make it.

I'd love to see a sequal to Star Wars... that Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia were amazing... ;) Failing that... maybe we shouldn't have sequals. It might force authors and producers to develop more original projects. Strictly speaking I've got to agree that most of what we call sequels aren't really that... they are parts of the same story, that were divided up because they could not fit into the format movie goers expect.

Does anyone remember a movie called something like "The Questor Tapes"? It was like late 60's or something I think... but I saw it briefly on TV one night and can't find any reference to it. I think its about a robot who is some kind of decendent of robots... There is only one Questor Robot at a time and the one in the movie was Questor 7 I think.
Anyway, that said... a movie about The Prisoner (good ol no. 6 - the British paranoic uber conspiracy tv series).
"Be seeing you..."

I can't wait for the next Harry Potter instalment - We took our 2 yr old son to see "The Chamber of Secrets" the other day, and he absolutely LOVED it (his first trip to the movies - and he "oohed" and "ahhed" in all the right places!). Well - he is crazy about "The Philosopher's Stone", and watches the DVD at every given moment...
Now, I'm a Harry Potter addict. I've read all the books, and can't wait until J. K. Rowling releases the 5th book in the series...

A 2 year old to the Harry Potter film and they weren't scared?!? That's nuts, I would be having nightmares for weeks after seeing that movie at that age.
It will be a big release once book five gets published - its taking some time. But I know that the next move, Prisoner of Akaban (sp?) won't have Columbus directing and some of the cast will be different as well. Too bad.

Nah, Duke - the kid LOVED it! (I dunno what the deal is with him - he loved the spiders, snakes, and the Quidditch match - and ESPECIALLY the train and car scene. I suppose it's because he liked the first Harry Potter movie so much, and he loves the music, magical atmosphere and colour of it all). He's definitely not the worse-for-wear, because he keeps talking about seeing it again.
Personally, I FREAKED when I saw the spiders...
But hey - that's just me.

The movies are baised on his religion so... he takes bad movie making very personal...
... I cant wait till they come out... if they ever do
I tried watching Bafflefield Earth and started getting a headache as well as a bit naucous. Some movies do that to me. I get literally sick to my stomach. THAT, and cyborg with Jean Claude Van Damme. When I RENTED Cyborg about ten years ago my younger brother and I were watching it and I had to pick up the remote and start fast-forwarding through it. Every thirty seconds I was turning to my brother and apologizing profusely for wasting a part of his life watching that trash.
I'm a bit baffled that JT is still beating a dead horse. But it's his money...

THE MOVIE THAT NEEDS A SEQUEL IS DEFINITELY "THE PROFESSIONAL". Of course, Natalie Portman, now being the assassin... That would kick ass and all of you out there know it...

Boondock Saints : Sequel is in the works.
Ghostbusters 3 : Canned after Chris Farley (cast as a ghostbuster in training) died.
Tron is already out on a special 2 disc edition DVD
As for my list of desired sequels:
Willow...one of the greatest fantasy movies ever made, screams for a sequel...
Spaceballs and History of the World have already been mentioned (I remember the first time I saw spaceballs as a little kid and being really excited when Yogurt mentions "space balls 2: the search for more money"
There already is another Indiana Jones movie in the works, with Harrision Ford, so I can't complain there.
I wouldn't mind seeing a follow-up to the 2000 version of Shaft with Samuel L Jackson
I had thought off more but they've escaped me....

 Worst Movies ever brought to the big screen:
Battlefield Earth - great. scifi and scientology. you do the math.
Turbulence - A poor man's passenger 57. PASSENGER 57!!! I fell asleep in the theater and cheered once the credits started rolling.
The Hunted - Benicio del Toro and a particularly old-looking Tommy Lee Jones run all over the pacific northwest stabbing each other. movie could've been 15 minutes long.
The producers of these steaming heaps should have to apologize profusely for the horrors they inflicted on the viewing audience, agree to being strapped to a chair and have their eyes propped open while watching these incredible atrocities on repeat.
BTW I stayed away from the Jean Claude Van Damme Movies and Stevan Segal flicks because those are in a sub-league of their own.
 Biggest "Choke" in terms of a Sequel:
Star Wars: Episode 1 - All Lucas had to do was listen to someone, ANYone about what the fans wanted. No such luck.
Star Wars: Episode 2 - Would it really have been so hard to name it "The Clone Wars"? That's all the people wanted. And yet again Lucas fails us.
The Godfather 3 - Man, did i really just see that? Let's pretend it never happened....
:) Best sequels in terms of upping the ante:
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Classic. Brilliant. Genius. Last Movie that Lucas had help on.
Blade 2 - You like vampires, action and gunplay? We'll deliver that and more! A sleeper hit scores even bigger the second time around.
Back to the Future 2 - After the first one they go to the future?!??! Dammit, I wanna go too!!! And don't pretend like you weren't DYING for a hoverboard after you saw it.

How about The Breakfast Club: Reunion with the original cast, meeting up again at their 20-year class reunion?
Then there's Battlestar Galactica! I know, 'twas a TV series (originally a TV movie miniseries), not a "movie", but still... I've read that Richard Hatch, who played Apollo on the original series, had prepared a trailer/teaser for a "20 years later" sequel series he wanted to produce called Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming (http://www.battlestargalactica.com/about/bgtsc/), and showed it to rave reviews at the '99 San Diego Comic Con. Apparently he pitched it to Vivendi/Universal, which owns the license for the original, and they were interested at first, but instead they decided to greenlight a cheaper "reimagined" Galactica revival series for Sci-Fi Channel that sounds... well, rather awful, from what I've read (some speculate that they're doing it on the cheap just to avoid the license expiring and falling outta their hands, and the new director's just trying to make the best outta the shiznit sandwich he's been handed ;) ).
Regarding Blade Runner, does anyone know if Philip K. Dick wrote anything that could remotely be considered sequel-ish to the novel from which the movie was adapted, Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep? At any rate, the original release's tacked-on Hollywood ending kinda tied things up too neatly (and I read that Harrison Ford deliberately over-deadpanned the voiceover narration that the studio wanted to add, because he thought they were a bad idea and hoped they'd get left out), but the Director's Cut without that tidy ending (nor voiceover narration, nor other studio edits and add-ons) leaves quite a few things fairly ambiguous -- Ridley Scott is the Man. :D I really dig what I've read of PKD's work (VALIS will mess your head but good  ), but I haven't covered the whole canon quite yet, so I dunno. :p

The sequel I'd most like to see is a "prequel." I'd like to see a decent version of "The Hobbit." I guess what I'd really like is for someone to remake the "Lord of the Rings" and put back into the movies all the stuff they left out of or changed in the current attempt. Shouldn't complain too much this version is so much, much better than the cartoon versions.

Unless a film is intended to be part of a series I think sequals are generally a bad idea. I hate hearing "but the left the ending open...there has to be a sequal...."
