actually my father said that earlier today. :)
My father knows I spend a lot of time on the forums, but he thinks that it isn't healthy for me (internally).
Is it harmful, in anyway, to spend too much time conversing within the forums? This is especially to those with too much time on their hands, such as I do. :p

I don't know, I spend a lot of time here but I don't have much else to do seeing as I'm jobless and all.........
I don't know if it's harmful or not, the internet hasn't been around long enough to look at the long term effects.

Well if I wasn't using the laptop on the toilet I would be watching tv so… Anyway 2 1/2 hours out of the day isn't that much.
Except for the fact that when I get off the throne I spend another 5 hours on it. Ahhh the light it burns, must go back to basement.
AHHH!!! There are eels in my hovercraft. AHHH!!!
I'm a forum junkie...
This is my heroin... ;) :p

Well, is you spend too much time for too long (I mean a month) it is not that good. The problem is that you can develop some kind of dependency to the site (I have been there).
You can spend and waist hours here and after a month or so you will see your friends are a bit away and that you have been loosing some real time in your life.
The other problem would be that if you meet a girl that you like... what are you gonna talk about with her? ¿about macs? ¿about your friends in the forums?
I recomend you to spend more time doing real things or to spend tons of time in the forums until you get tired of it at once.
Besides, your lower back is gonna end up weaker and would be easy to feel some pain for spending so much tiem in the computer. You are gonna gain some fat and look all skin white (no sun light). You are gonna feel sleepy and tired because you teached your body to stay calm and you are gonna be up untild very late because you didn't burn energy during the day.
That is what your father was talking about.

hehe, another basement dweller. I too eat, play ps2, listen to music, surf the internet, play games, etc down here. I only go up for more food, waste expulsion, school, sleep, and work.
As for the eels in thy hovercraft, DAMN that was a good Monty Python Sketch. "My nipples are exploding with light!" :D

I am not a "geek" or anything here :-) I am a semi-goth industrial party person. I like to get high, drink, blow up things, go to concerts and spend time with girls. But got I can't stand most girls. ****ING POSERS DIE NOW!!! I need a übergeek girl with and über party side who is a über-rocker. [/rant]

You know, I find it kind of ironic that you came to this forum to discuss the harmful effects of being addict to forums. We aren't exactly the right audience to ask :).

I'm doing a research project (Yay! 12 College Credits!!!) on computer addiction, and so all my resaerch has turned up that to tryely have a dependency to something like a computer, or a fourm, then one generally has another dependency as well; i.e. drugs, or they get some sort of rush, like stealing. Also, if one is to have a different mental health problem, and they spend five or six hours a day, instead of going to work or associatring with their family (neglecting their life) then they VERY LOOSELY fit a VERY LOOSELY fit the defintion of addicted.
But I've only been doing my research for a little while (I smell Intel Project!), so don't count on much that I say.

If that's what you really look like, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING HERE?!?
Anyway, I have a life. Just not a very good one. And I have friends. But most of them suck. Lost my job a few months ago, and no girlfriend (though I am kinda seeing someone, it's complicated). I broke things off with my lying, cheating ex-fiancee almost 2 years ago. I was supposed to be starting a new project, and was going to be getting all new equipment (including a nice shiny new Mac), but I lost funding so  for me. I had been going to Rumor sites on my lunch breaks, here and there for a few years. I finally registered here and post everyonce in awhile.
So to me, not so harmful. I drag my feet, but I still get stuff done. And since I will be moving on Jan 3, I won't be seeing you guys for awhile :( but I'll come back to visit as soon as I can (not that any of you have a clue as to who I am, because I don't post that often).
For some of you, maybe you're trying to learn something. Maybe you're just bored. Maybe the people here are you're friends. Maybe you should get out more. Then again, people are evil, and the Sun is bad for you. And if your loved ones get mad at you for spending too much time in the basement, show them how much Programmers/IT People make, and they'll shut up. After all, who needs lives?
Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this.

i think it is ok as long as you don't give out your credit card numbers to every vendor that comes your way
business based spam has become rampant and could victimize young children and seniors and many of the most well known companies are the worst offenders
when downloading the free version of realplayer, one has to carefully make sure they are downloading that free version and not the pay for it version which has the bigger hyperlinks...some could be led to believe in order to use any software from real.com, one has to automatically buy a better, upgraded version...this should not be the case and us techie related folks most likely are saavy enough not to fall into real.com's intent

I am a web designer and do a little video editing. Most of what I do online is research or learning. I also read a lot of literary sites on a daily basis. I also play video games, fix crap around my house, make dinner fro my girlfriend and I every night. Watch a couple of TV shows religiously and read a book a week, depending ont he book length of course. Not to mention Magazines, building furniture (tables and all, no upholstery, and working with the disabled in my day job.
No, I wouldn't say the web or forums have caused me any harm. The most time consuming thing has been this political debate of late, but I think that discussing politics is one of the better things you can do with your time.
I do feel a bit overstimulated, though. I also can't remember the last time I slept for more than 6 hours during the week, but most successful people sleep four or five a night, so that doesn't really bother me. That sums up my ideas about it, in a strange way.
If you want to be a normal person, you want what is absolutely best for you, be moderate. Truely successful people are passionate in all of their persuits.:D
I am appearantly not passionate about spelling

MacAddict et. al., I'm grateful for your responses, really.
And I have amigos-a-plenty in the outside world, especially from those I know between/at classes (not college, just yet :D).
I do spent a great deal of time on the internet, so I think it's a habit. I suppose those "real things" you were talking about, Addict, would be being more involved with the family.
I appreciate the responses, et. al, hatman, and Mr./Ms. Spam.
BTW: I think my father has that remote! :p
