I'll pretty much listen to anything, but I'm really into acid jazz and drum&bass type of music at the moment.

I listen to a bunch of other stuff too, but that just seems to fit my mood better I guess.

Hoho. I was gonna ask if you had heard of them edvnoiw. Damn amazing group!!

What kind of Drum&Bass are you into???
We have a big Drum and Base scene down here.
Have you heard of Concord Dawn, Paradigm, Shapeshifter, Pitch Black. I can give you names of tracks to download for a taste test.
They are all quite different sounding drum and base bands, I think it's Paradigm that is a live drum and base act (might be Shapeshifter) both great bands to see live.

I used to have digital cable with some killer music stations on it, that's how I heard of them.
Since I have a slow internet connection and almost no extra money to spend, most of their tracks that I have are MP3'd remixes (damn good ones)

What I did in the meantime though was write down all the good artists I heard on a piece of paper (up to two pages already) so if I can find it I'll tell ya.

Only one of you mentioned the Beatles. You bastards. The Beatles get the same number of votes as James Mother****ing Taylor? What is wrong with this picture? I remember the days when music actually meant something. Nowadays it's all this "Man, you gotta check out this new band called Topsoil Onion Speaker Cable, they're like a mix of industrial urban speed techno noise with a drop of alt country and a touch of ambient and hardcore ska & punk, they're ****ing awesome!!!!!!!!" ****e. And there's no "You have to listen to this because it's good." It's all "You have to listen to this because it will make you cool." What the hell happened?

I'm into anything with a modern/futuristic tune, but more importantly something with a positive message above all else. I'll listen to early 1990s RHCP or the original No Doubt for a positive and original message. That message isn't any of that garbage about killing others, or saying how much an artist hates his family/life/[morons...].

The way I see it: Selling a negative message about one's self for money is very similar to prostitution. You pay money to be with a person who displays little talent or will to live, much like you pay to listen to artists rather off wanting to die. No talent, no life, oxymoron.^2

Any of that garbage (some rap, some heavy metal) really needs to be put to rest. Some artists have no passion whatsoever, just a selfish and cold inside.

Slipknot, Eminem, ya hear?

An excellent example of the opposite of this "garbage" is Disturbed. Another great example is P.O.D. There are several others, but that's what I am most interested in.

I also make a few exceptions, as to specific artists, or if the CD is passionate enough to display a message, whether +/-.

If you get a chance, read an article by Lester Bangs called "James Taylor Marked For Death." Absolutely hilarious. :)

I listen to SKA, it's my lifeblood. I'm in a ska band where I play sax and I write all the hornlines for it; there's nothing like getting on stage and playin a killer show where a crowd that knows nothing about you gets really into it. In my opinion, SKA is the most fun type of music there is, period. If you want music that'll put a smile on your face anytime, and that really carries a positive message (second wave ska came around right after the civil rights movement, and it's symbol was a black and white checker pattern [like that of a racing flag] and it stood for unity of races).

If you want to give ska a chance, check out these bands:

The Toasters
The Slackers
Less Than Jake
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Reel Big Fish
MU330
Rx Bandits
Slow Gherkin
Jeffrie's Fan Club
Big D and the Kids Table
Skankin' Pickle
The Specials
Voodoo Glow Skulls
The Skatalites
Madness
Driving While Stupid (my band, sorry, had to, just click the link in my sig...)

There are plenty more, but I have things have to do... playin my sax

I also listen to all sorts of other music, but I've decided to focus this topic on the one kind that really makes me tick

BTW... King Cobra... do you have the original No Doubt CD, the self titled one?? I've looked everywhere for it, but I cant find it anywhere. If you could tell me where you found it or maybe if I could "borrow" the songs from it, you'd be my savior... Thanks!

DMB, Edwin McCain, John Mayer (before he got radioplay), Our Lady Peace, Alice in Chains, Howie Day, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Better Than Ezra, 311, New Found Glory, Dashboard Confessional....

ok so I listen to mainly radio artists....no CD player in car and that's where I spend a good deal of my time. I guess I'll listen to just about anything besides country, really hard rock and rap.

Jonny Lang, Josh Groban and Starting Line are some of the other artists I've been looking into. Thievery Corporation and Poe sounded good too.

Here's a couple that are less well known:
Jeff Buckley
Jubilant Sykes

Buckley, an artist who died in his prime in a tragic drowning accident, characterized by a haunting falsetto voice. One of his songs is the theme for "The Dead Zone"...you know it if you've heard it.

Sykes is an opera/gospel singer with great range and soulful interpretation. I first saw him in a Christman concert...amazing singer.

I'm pretty limited in my tastes. I like "space" music (ala Patrick O'Hearn & John Serrie), alternative/new wave and movie scores.

I can not STAND top 40, pop, R&B/hip-hop/dance BS, boy bands--anything that you hear on mainstream radio.

Buckley, an artist who died in his prime in a tragic drowning accident, characterized by a haunting falsetto voice. One of his songs is the theme for "The Dead Zone"...you know it if you've heard it.

Yes finally somebody mentioned Jeff! I have a live video of his, live in chicago. Really good stuff. I think I forgot to mention him in my original post. I bought grace for £5 in my local record shop, possibly the best purchase I've made except possibly my ZONDA (see below).

Anyone got any Ben Harper, he is another singer songwriter in league with Buckley for greatness. Also there is Elliott Smith, he's got some good tracks out.

BTW I love these music threads, and Its interesting that most MAC people seem to have pretty good music taste. I guess its cos, like me, most macusers like musics as much if not more than their macs.

springscansing: it takes a toughened soul to be able to listen to that merzbow stuf on a regular basis! i did here some of it on the warp records web site and it is interesting though.

Rower_CPU: first mention of Jeff Buckley! ive just started to listen to some of his stuff and really enjoy it. its very relaxing some of it.

Im suprized that i listen to a lot of stuff that has yet to be mentioned: [not everything hasnt been mentioned though]

Electronic/IDM/Drum[Drill]nBass

Aphex Twin [his piano peices are amazing too]
Squarepusher
Plaid
Boards of Canada
Brothomstates

Electronic "MC'less" Hip-Hop

Machine Drum
Kristuit Salu vs. Morris Nightingale

Acid/Abstract Jazz: I LOVE Portishead!! A lot of Squarepushers older stuff falls under this category [like "Hard Normal Daddy"]

Some Hip-Hop also, nothing mainstream though. ive been listening to Atmosphere lately, a local Minneapolis, MN Group.

I listen to such a broad variety of music, exept Country of course :D

a few other groups ive been listening a lot to lately are:

NOFX
Phillip Glass [solo piano kicks ass]
Dashboard Confessional [his early stuff]
Buena Vista Social Club
Radiohead
Neutral Milk Hotel
Proswell
Some Older Sasha and John Digweed Compliations

and a lot more that i just cant think of right now [all my music is on my powerbook back home!]

some good websites for getting into new music are:

www.warprecords.com
www.m3rck.net
www.kristuitsalu.com

ultimately youll get linked to other cool websites, from these sites :)

enjoy; i do

man i suck at typing! must be that lovely laptop keyboard thats made me type like crap on this one. :)

bane for sure. shai hulud might be a bit tough to get into... i mean, a little scary. ha. i'd ahve to add boy sets fire to the list as well.

though fun to see in concert. man can that guy jump

and i agree on dashboard at least. haven't heard juliana theory much.

if you want emo that's not sappy and is actually good emotional punk/indie rock.... sense field, farside. definitely the way to go.

well yeah, goes without saying for US. but i mean, you don't want to give people who aren't as knowledgeable the wrong idea......

i'm really just looking out for the country. though i suppose it doesn't matter, once the pants pissing occurs. hearts will sway. and with them, votes.
