Video out on iMac and resolutions

Hi

Is it possible to force an external display to run at a different resolution to the internal monitor? I want to output a HD signal to my TV, but the required res isnt listed.

Yes, but you need a hack. Google for iMac spanning hack.

Unless the iMac has DVI out or you have a component video convertor for it I don't think you'll have much luck forcing it to work at any HD res on a TV.

It can be done with a hack from a German. This hack is for iBooks and iMacs. You'll find it soon enough if you do a Google. If your screens are on different resolutions, then the second screen is an extension of the first, they don't show the same contents.
