wasn't yours... your list has very respectable people indeed...

i was thinking more of things like mcdonald's, enron, KFC, teeny boppers, etc....

not respected historical figures.

and while i don't think that the celebrities mentioned are necessarily embarrassing, the fact that they are considered "icons" is... matt damon? come on... helen hunt???

The McDonalds arches are more recognizable, worldwide, than the Christian cross.

sadly McDonalds does have to go (high) on that list...

but i think the biggest american icon, as seen by the biggest world population, is cold hard cash. That's right, money. The stuff that every american has in abundance according to so many people...

i think rudeness is also an American icon, because NY is always touted as being so rude. Tho that has somewhat faltered since 9/11.

Oh, and while i'm on the subject, the World Trade Center.

Coke? I'm confuse here. Some of us list people while other list material things. Be that as it may, I will agree with you.

Billy Graham...with respect to the Trent Lott mess... I don't think Graham's politics is far from Lotts (we can debate about this endlessly). As a minority, I beg to differ.

BTW it was interesting to note a recent John McCain comment...."The Republican party is a pary of Lincoln." How naive! Since Nixon, the GOP has been a haven for separatist, KKK, Conservative Value people, State Rights, or whatever the new code word or words these losers call themselves now. It was no coincident that McCain lost to Bush in the 2000 primary.

i think we should define icon here... To me, an icon is simply the definition of a noun: a person, place, thing or idea. To limit American icons to people is to ignore vast cultural "achievements" (good or bad).

i will definitely agree that coca-cola is a big icon, in so many pictures of foreign cities you can see billboards with the "ribbon device" (that's what Coke used to call part of it's logo officially)... i think we've all seen movies in other languages where Coca-Cola is the only english...

Anyway, I figured an icon here could be anything from American culture, which doesn't really limit itself.

A big one might actually be Democracy, but, damn, there we go again, getting political.... ;)

Ha, it would be interesting to see what the different responses would be from the international MacRumors community.

Sorry, it takes so long to respond. I had a lot of work.

Graham's politics is closely align with Lotts' politics. Off course there are minor differences, but reasonable minds will agree with me. One defining word the comes to mind that binds them together is intolerance (e.g. of different ideological view) I don't remember all that well, but Graham ran into trouble a year or two ago on comments inline with the intolerance theme. I'm always suspicious of preacher(s) who proclaim the truth. A very famous man once said, "be weary of men who advertise the truth, for they are the least likely to possess it." I think this man was Time Magazine person of the 20th Century (This quote is paraphrase).

graham is sincere in the belief that his religion is the one true religion...but he is not intolerant

parade magazine, a few years back, profiled graham's contributions and he humbly mentioned that he is a democrat, but his main issue to to basically let the world know about jesus christ

i believe graham believes christ knows the truth and that graham himself is only a messenger

i have not seen any evidence that graham is involved in a messiah complex like jim jones or kip mckean of the boston church of christ...which was the other cultic spinoff that came after the people's temple to split from a mainline church...the church of christ (which is not a cult)

I don't mean to go as far as to suggest Graham has a messiah complex. My criticism of those claiming the truth is more mundane and the their proclaimations seem to go against common sense. This fault is not limited to preachers, but can be found in other discipline (e.g. science, of all things). Stephen Wolfram wrote a comprehensive work called "A new kind of science" is a good example. Most of his ideas were conveniently borrowed and he seems to not be aware of research in other field but went ahead and try to reinvent the wheel (e.g. biological evolution). A genius (properly used adjective here) he is, but now just a salesman.
