I was expecting the DVD app to get an upgrade enlight of the play back issues during frontrow. I guess it does make a little sense that apple would not be too keen on enabling the majority of their line to run on a hacked version of FrontRow.

Since its a large file, I'm downloading from a campus computer lab computer (dorm rooms are capped at 3mbit/sec). I got the file at about 1.2 megabytes/sec :D I downloaded all 97 megabytes in about a minute! Now it's just taking forever to copy over to my Mac.

i may be wrong but i believe the package size is different depending on what you already have installed.. example if you have previous sercurity updates installed etc... thus the more up to date systems would only need the 50mb dl while the not so up to date would need the 90mb download.. lets see what i need.. i just reinstalled tiger on my brand new dualcore 2.3 :)

My G5 iMac downloaded a 56.8 mb update. What is with the discrepancies in file sizes?!
I'd guess that the 56.8MB file is a delta upgrade from 10.4.2, where that 97MB file is the full update from a previous (10.4.1 or 10.4.0) version.
My iMac G5 DL'd the 56.8MB version, and I previously had 10.4.2 running.

Only about 4 minutes from start bong to running on the iBook in my sig. Note its running a 5400RPM HD.

EDIT 2 : Maybe not completely broken. I may have been something specific to my set-up. Xkeys may have been the culprit.

To everyone wanting the cleardock/transparent dock installer... because of strong interest I'll open a thread in Mac Basics later when I get home and post the link if I find it. If not I'll upload it somewhere (no clue where yet, if anyone knows let me know) and post the link.

It's an installer package that changes just that (makes the dock clear). Comes with an uninstaller too and has never made ANY problems for me. If you're interested I can send you the link or the file later (I am at work right now) just pm me. :)Thanks, I might take you up on that if APE and/or ClearDock actually quits on me... for now it works fine... :)

You should try it, set your hot corner in the same spot for a day or so, you'll see what I'm talking about (Assuming you use hot corners, and don't hide your dock)... Its been here since 10.4.0 (It was fine in panther)

The mouse isn't over the dock, but it's magnified.
If you move the mouse over again, the dock will respond once more, but if you don't it will remain magnified indefinitely. This was a real big problem in 10.4.0, was partly solved in 10.4.1 but still persists in some form in 10.4.2/10.4.3.

Yes, that's perfectly normal. DskU is actually not repairing the permissions in question, it just says it is using special permissions. A bit confusing, but that is what it does. From now on you will see this every time you repair permissions.

Took a hell of a time to reboot, more than 2 min. Safari is faster, at start up it seem it have redo the spolight archive on my external HD, took a few minutes. My firewire connection seem more stable, I run into trouble from time to time, now work like a charm. The low sound with internal speaker issue on powerbook seem to be gone finally. Spolight is more responsive.
Note: repair permission after installing, a lot got mess up even if I repair them before installing. There's now a verify start up disk now in disk utility too.
Finally the firewire problem is still there, I begin to suspect intermintant hardware problem, anybody have a good schematic of the firewire for powerbook Ti 1GHz, so I may try to repair it?

To all those who knew one of the many hacks to enable Quartz 2d Extreme - Don't do it in 10.4.3! I had Q2dE enabled in 10.4.2 without any troubles. I installed 10.4.3 and, as promised, it was disabled. I did the old go into Quartz Debug, enable, force quit trick and bam - not 3 minutes later I had a kernel panic (the first one on my powerbook in 6 months). Don't do it (or save everything first!)

Don't know if it's been "fixed" but it works a lot better over my airport network.
I used to get "not enough bandwidth" almost everytime I tried iChat over airport. Now it's down to 1 out of every 10 times.

I voted negative on this post and I'm an Apple fan boy from way back. Apple should never have released something as buggy as Tiger was. Yes I know some people never had any issues, but I was not one of those people, nor were many people I know.
I still would prefer Tiger to Windows, and it is infinitely less buggy. It's also a lot better than the bad ol' OS 9 days, but after the release of 10.1 Mac fans began expeccting better. Maybe we're just spoiled.
I did wait it out for 10.4.3 without any BIG hassles, but Leopard really has to be better than this to thrash XP and one day (who knows when, likely after Leopard) Vista/Longhorn. It's not enough to simply be better. Apple has to continue to embarrass Microsoft as they have for the past .

Okay Fully fixed!
There was never a problem with the front row application it still launches when holding esc. It appears Apple updated applescript. The old applescript launcher I was using was broken.
Use the following code in Script Editor, compile then save as an application bundle and you are golden.
tell application "Front Row"
activate
tell application "System Events" to key code 53

Something's definitley up with the Disk Utility. I've repaired/verified disk permissions like 6 times already and there are still a lot of things cropping up. Normally it's just2-3 items, but this like A LOT. Anyone else with this problem? Or should I just stop repairing and let it be?
I also noticed that the permissions are all related to widgets, which I only have 4 items enabled...
i ran it a bunch, never seemed to stop having things to fix. i'm leaving it alone for now.

Just updated my 15" PB, 97 meg, about 2 megabytes/sec download rate :) Woot...love sitting on 2 gig links to the net...heh..about 1 min download time.
I suspect the 97 meg version may have to do with Xcode, or X11. I don't think I have X11 installed on here yet but I am pretty sure I put Xcode on.
Memory usage looks OK, about 1.42 gig free, 225 meg in use. I noticed a CPU spike at login which looked like mdimport running so Spotlight may have been updated and was doing some adjustments/reindexing (Or maybe it does this on all reboots, I'm an OS X newbie so don't know).
So far so good, it boots at least...and Safari loaded to let me post this, thats about all I can report.

a couple notes:
if you've UNO (http://gui.interacto.net/index.php)fied, the highlighted tab in safari doesn't mesh smoothly into the rest of the of window.
also, if you have the item info displayed on the right on your desktop, they increased the column spacing... a lot.
otherwise, so far so good, though.
//edit: my safari install didn't drop flash support.. i had flash 8 installed a while ago though.. i think when it was beta.

whats with all the permissions repairing? It sounds like it needs to be done manually after every update?Well, it might not be needed, but it's a convenient way to avoid any problems. All installers that requires password may mess with your permissions, and by repairing them right after major installs you might just catch potential (though rare) errors before they cause problems... :)

PB12 58MB 58MB 58MB 58MB
D2.0G5 58MB

ImacG5 97MB 97MB
D2.5G5 58MB
PB17 97MB 97MB

IB14 97MB

Just installed this on my partner's iBook, (never experiment on my own ;)) and all seems to work well. It was 56.8mb, and took around 2 mins on my 4meg connection. (although I can't believe people are moaning that it took 5 whole mins :D :p)
Repairing permissions brought up the same as everyone else - a slew of widgets, and some php-related files. I repaired them, and the same things still came up when I tried it again. Ah well :)

If you have an El Gato EyeHome you may want to hold off upgrading to 10.4.3 until El Gato release an upgrade for their EyeHome product, it is crashing out here constantly since I upgraded to .3. Finally though this will force El Gato to upgrade the EyeHome which IMHO has been in need of a firmware upgrade for ages now, how about an upgrade to some modern codecs El Gato?

Perhaps updating all of its Spotlight stores--notice that new metadata items (like the 'Software' field for TIFF files) are now catalogued. I suspect that it wants to go through other files, too, for other things.

Updated permissions on my powerbook and it found 2 files that needed repairing. I'll do the same on my powermac as soon as a DVD finishes burning.
Overall, it does seem snappier. Spotlight's faster, Finder's a bit quicker. Haven't tried Safari as I use Camino, but may give Safari a shot now if it's better since Camino is slightly buggy.

From www.macintouch.com
"Apple released the Mac OS X 10.4.3 (Delta) update for 10.4.2 and 10.4.3 Combo update for any 10.4 version"
The smaller version is probably Delta and the bigger version is the updater for other than 10.4.2.

I am not sure what is with this file size difference because I have a fully updated PB15" and I have 97MB to download so it is definately not because you are going from 10.4.1 rather than 10.4.2. Not sure... maybe we should plot which systems are doing what... I will start..

Haha, I guess I am just an upgrade junkie. I couldn't live without some of the Tiger features... lucky me I have a fast connection down here in México or else I'd cry now... :D
Ahem, and just when exactly did you end up in Mexico? And furthermore, did you get hit by the hurricanes at all? Come overt to Hawaii, that's where I'll be in a couple weeks.
Yeah, I'm definitely not an upgrade junkie - too practical for my own good, I guess. If I see a lot of value in the upgrade for my personal needs, then yes, I will (i.e.e getting Toast 7), but otherwise I'll just stick with what I have, like Office X for my word processing/spreadsheet needs (no need for 2004) and Final Draft 6 for my screenwriting needs (no need for 7 or AV).

Apple still hasn't fixed the issue where, when you use the Terminal to tell the Finder to show all files, including invisible ones (easy to do on Windows!), *all* files dim to half-opacity, instead of just the invisible ones. Try this in icon- or column-view mode (looks as though list-view shows them normally).
Panther did not have this problem. Turning off the setting restores all files to full opacity. This is rather off-putting, from an I-want-to-be-a-geek-but-I-still-want-to-use-the-GUI standpoint--I should be allowed to know what's on my machine without having to squint to make out the icons.

Disables Quartz 2D Extreme—Quartz 2D Extreme is not a supported feature in Tiger, and re-enabling it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics.
Opinions?
for me, enabling Quartz 2D leads to issues redrawing certian pdf files when not viewed at 100% (lots of black boxes where equations should be). seems fair enough to make "off" the default. if you want it, you know how to turn it back on

There was never a problem with the front row application it still launches when holding esc. It appears Apple updated applescript. The old applescript launcher I was using was broken.
Use the following code in Script Editor, compile then save as an application bundle and you are golden.
tell application "Front Row"
activate
tell application "System Events" to key code 53
end tellI have never written an Applescript before. Never run that application before. And your instructions were so spot on it worked the first time I tried it. Thank you very much.
