View Full Version : 5G (video) iPod Sales Strong?

MacRumors

According to various "industry and channel sources", one analyst is reporting (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/analyst-5g-ipod-sales-ahead-of-expectations/) that the 5th generation iPods are selling better than expected... even exceeding iPod nano sales in certain markets.

Businessweek points (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2005/tc20051101_614904.htm) to 5-7 day delays in fulfilling orders of the 5th Generation iPod from Apple, however, this may simply be due to constraint in certain supplies. Apple is reportedly shopping around for a second supplier of LCDs to relieve the constraint.

Apple has already announced that they have sold over 1 million videos, but its hard to correlate that to 5G iPods sales, since anyone can purchase a video to play back on their Mac or PC.

So much for all of you that said an iPod that could play video was a dumb idea and that Apple was making a mistake. I love my 5G iPod!

The video iPod is the best bang for the buck. I can see how it would be a bestseller among the whole iPod line.

That, and from a real estate perspective more and more people are moving into the city from the suburbs... That means more people riding on the bus, taking the metro/subway, etc. I am sure that the video iPod would be a nice way to help pass the time...

If every lawyer in DC and NYC bought one of these things, they would sell millions :)

While i love the market for music videos being created.

No one is saying whether or not the videos being downloaded are all recent. or had been including sales/downloads prior to the introduction of the video ipod.

my bet is that this includes the info from prior downloads.

i know i own some music videos which were included in my album purchases.

That's basically what I've been waiting for. I bought my first iPod a couple of years ago and have been holding out since then. I have to say that the video iPod rocks so far. I've loaded it up with home movies to show relatives and started ripping my dvd collection to watch when I travel. Much easier than toting all the discs with me.

Yeah, AAPL is doing great. I made a 50% profit over several months. Too bad I got out, it's about 125% now.

The only thing I wonder about is the iPod w/ video is apparently fueling QuickTime 7 Pro sales, but do people realize that that won't really let them rip DVDs? If iTunes had a good DVD ripper in it, then people would buy the new 5G iPods like there's no tomorrow, and for Apple, there wouldn't be, because they would be sued into oblivion by Hollywood.

I like my 4g 60 just fine, and I do not need to spend the money.... but those new ones are so THIN :) I like that almost as much as I like the bigger screen.

As for video, it's a fun extra, but not--for me--a reason to buy in and of itself.

What I really need is a way to justify buying BOTH a 5g and a nano. Suggestions are welcome :)

Apple's own press release says that 1 million were purchsed and downloaded in under 20 days. That pretty much means that the tally started when the videos/tv shows were released on the iTMS.

There are two reasons I am avoiding the Apple Store now:
1) 60GB iPod (I already have a 4G/60GB)
2) 15" PB with 7200rpm 100GB drive (I already have a 15" 1.25GHz...)

Do I need to upgrade? No.
Do I want to upgrade? Hell yeah!!!

That's what I did.. I bought google at $276 and Apple at $39. $5000 dollars worth.. Then I sold the Google stock (due to peer pressure). I knew i should've stayed in... And I lost five hundred in Delta (Dumb move, I know)... But overall, my profit from Apple has been 56%..

Thanks Apple.. I love you.

I'm amazed at the continued appeal of the iPod. I keep thinking it's going to level out at some point, but it just keeps exploding in popularity. A friend of mine who is notoriously anti-Apple (literally, he hates the company) just announced to me a couple days ago that he's going to buy a video iPod. It's surprising how rapidly Apple is winning over even its most fervent critics with this thing.

I recently bought QT7Pro for my iBook mainly so I could easliy compress the 320x240 15 fps MJPEG video clips that are generated by my digital camera into iTunes/iPod compatible format. I have other ways to rip DVDs to MPEG-4 if I choose to do so, and I would probably do so on my desktop PC.

I thought the iPod poho was a waste of money when it came out but told myself as soon as a video one hits shelves I will move up. I traded in my 3g 20gb for the 30 gig! It arrives tomorrow at 10:30.... I already have 12 hours of video to put on it! I am so stoked.

I hope this "faster sales than the nano" is proven soon, I can't wait to rub in in the faces of all the people who thought the video iPod would never sell.

i just returned my 5G white ipod back to apple.com. Battery life sux and it is way too scratch prone. i only had it for 10 days and there already were a few massive scratches and i almost NEVER take it out of it's case. Only to flip it over to connect it to my PowerBook! and the case was already getting all super dirty and worn out.

I dont want a product that im afraid to touch. Apple is my favorite complany, but im gonna wait this whole lawsuit out and probably gonna skip this gen of 'screened' iPods.

I bought a 1GB shuffle instead. and i can touch it! I had a U2 iPod before and sold it to get the 5G, so im still going through the shock of dropping down to the level of the shuffle, but i think i'll be alright, i just hope they hurry and change the material they use, both plastic front and metal backing, or at least make them scatch resistant.

I dont wanna hide something so beautiful in a case!!!!!

I wonder how many folks were waiting for a "vid pod" before they bought ?I know I was. And now that I can't afford one, I'm waiting for the 6G version with the bigger 16:9 screen. Still love my 2G 20GB 6 pin FW unit I got for $299 after 3G was announced two years ago. It's only twice as thick as a 5G 60 GB video model and only weighs twice as much.:p

I LOVE my 5G iPod. I had a 3G 30 gig, and it served me well for a long time. I vowed to update as soon as Apple release a video-capable iPod.

This thing exceeds my initial expectations. It is beautiful, thin, and the LCD is stunning. This is, by far, the best iPod to date. We are a 4 iPod household; and my wife, who just watched her first episode of Lost on my iPod on a recent car trip we took, has informed me that her Mini is now inadequate. :-)

I often wander through the Apple store and listen to shoppers questions and comments. On the day I bought my 5G, I overheard at least a couple of people who had come in to buy the Nano, but upon seeing the 5G, bought that instead. It has street appeal.

Apparently you are unaware that the FREE HandBrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) will rip all Macrovision protected DVDs perrfectly and directly to iPod compatible files. QT 7 Pro not required. The fix is in Alex. And it is very nifty. I use HandBrake to rip all videos I post on my Vlog. It is the best MP4 ripper in the world for all sorts of applications. I port everything to DVD images then to mp4 via HandBrake. For me, it's the only way to fly.

I believe the word is out on the street and that the early adopters of the Video iPod all know this.

That way it will never be directly exposed to any scratching possibilities. That's my plan. I will be shopping for a case before I buy the iPod. Waiting for the 80 GB 3" widescreen model. :)

I love my 60 GB Video iPod. I think it is a much better deal than the Nano. At my Apple store the white one is selling more than the black one. Probably because of the rumored scratches that can happen. I have the black one and I don't see any scratches just using it normally. Perhaps people are dragging their iPods on the street using the included headphones.

I finally have an iPod that can hold my entire music collection and photos. No more dragging and dropping songs. I knew that video iPods would be a major hit. The screen size to me is actually an advantage of not being too big so I can carry it around. I didn't find the small screen size a problem at all even after 3 hours of continous use.

It 's not a surprise my friends usually hold more than 1 ipod, some may have 3-4 ipods, n they would never want to sell them out.

As a college educator, I have to take issue with this statement. :)

I've already caught students in my lectures listening to their iPods. It is rude and disrespectful, but it also gives me the opportunity to come up with some ways to embarrassing students (like walking up to them, asking them to listen to their music, and then saying "So, you really like Brittney Spears, huh?") Video iPods will give me the chance to change "Brittany Spears" to "porn."

I was thinking the same thing. I recently got my 5G 60gig iPod and use it as a portable bootable hard drive and have yet to put a scatch on it. I haven't had to take any, out of the ordinary, special precautions and find myself taking more extra care not to scratch my PSP than my iPod...
