OK... I already replied to drater's PM to me on this question, and now I will reply publicly:

What you are suggesting is copyright violation. You CANNOT rip a DVD to an iPod-compatible format and then post it somewhere or make it available for anyone else to download. It's crap like that that causes honest folk like myself to be punished with restrictive technology that prevents us from using items we purchased the way we should be able to use them (e.g., unrippable CDs).

Any posts that give out locations for where to download copyrighted material should Wastelanded and/or deleted, in my opinion. And anyone who posts copyrighted material for public download should be banned from Mac Forums.

he never said what type of video....His PM text to me, under the subject line "your ipod videos":

are you uploading these to any bit torrent sites? I only have an ibook and it take a long ass time to put my dvds on my ipod via handbreak. So I know what type of videos he was referring to. And I say again: That's illegal.

To be fair to the guy, he did say they were 'his' DVDs he wished to put on the iPod. In terms of fair use, is carrying a encoding of DVD you already own any more illegal than carrying an mp3?

I would agree. I never thought he was referring to pirated video. I think you are a little paranoid Mr clayj. And I was sooo looking forward to see draters home movies too.

I just asked if anyone did it, I didn't ask if it was illegal. Besides, my dvd collection is quite large (over 200). It was a curiousity question. And my home movies are off the wall!!! hahahahaahaha

I'm sure you can google to find what you're looking for.

And as per this discussion, there's nothing illegal about bittorrent itself, but pirating via bittorrent is illegal. It didn't seem like the guy's asking where he can download this week's episode of Lost.

*Grey Area   *

THIS THREAD SHOULD BE LOCKED/REMOVED

Face it, even if he was asking for DVD's he owned it's still illegal to "distribute" that content in the way that he was suggesting. There is no grey area and there should be no further discussion.

It was just a question, I'm sorry I asked it now, I did not know that this was copyright infringment, I apologize. I like to follow the rules and this was an area that I thought did not violate the copyright laws.

At least, in the U.S.A., there is a legal statement allowing fair use of copying a CD as a backup. It is expressly forbidden to back up a DVD, even though you own a physical copy of the original.

Be careful what you're discussing in public, everyone.
