Run Disk Utility and repair permissions, then try again.

You could look for the preferences and delete them and try it again.

Also, if you've added a new device since the last time you ran it, try removing that device and start it again.

it starts to launch and starts 'gathering' but bails out before it completes.

ummmm - took the prefs and tossed 'em - STILL NO DICE

any other thoughts?

it gets a little further, it finishes 'gathering' then for a 1/2 second I can see the stats on my machine... then unexpected quit...

and... umm are the prefs suposed to 'rebuild' themselves? Because they are now GONE

Apple has specified that if the preferences are not found that the application should create a new version of them. If their own developers are doing this, well...they should be shot with rubber bands (which they probably have happen anyway).

I have had problems with System Profiler from time to time as far as it would display incorrect connections...FireWire drive on SCSI card, etc. but that's all been corrected.

I saw that you have another thread open now. Have you repaired permissions?

Try updating to 10.2.3. Never know, it may help.
