The World Comes Together
Oct. 26, 2005

Gamers from around the world converge on NintendoWiFi.com

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection launches worldwide in November, and NintendoWiFi.com will serve as the base working to bring gamers together.

Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World and Tony Hawk's American Sk8land serve as the launch titles for the new, free service. At NintendoWiFi.com, gamers can chat with fellow followers of the DS and trade Friend Codes.

This site features a hotspot locator to help you find free wireless Internet access near you. Because this is your community, we'll even let you add Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection compatible hotspots in your area. You can help others near you get connected!

Count on NintendoWiFi.com to be your main resource for wireless router ratings. Which ones are the most compatible with the network and what can you do to get the most out of your router? We have the answers right here.

We've also made troubleshooting amazingly easy. If you get an error code in the game, enter it in the Tech Support page to get an instant answer. We want the solution to any problem you may come across to be a quick fix.

Each world region will use their own version of the NintendoWiFi.com Web site, with U.S. and Canadian gamers sharing the same cyberspace. We're here to help you have fun. Making new friends is up to you.

Whilst I'm glad to see Apple on the "approved" list for once, if it's just wireless internet access that is required, why are there so many routers with compatibility issues?

I already have an account at Nintendo.com. I'm glad it carries over to Nintendo Wi-Fi. I just need a game so I can confirm my ID and start playing online.

I like getting high-resolution wallpaper, buddy icons, or software for registering my games too. :D

Mario Kart was supposed to be hitting Europe first, on the 4th I think it was, but alas it's been delayed so I've got the US version coming. I just hope it works fine in the UK, what with the wifi and all that! I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Nintendo don't bother with region stuff.

I'm really excited about all this :) I've seen too many videos for Mario Kart now (including the 30 minute presentation on IGN). Its going to be too good, on paper its the best game ever; A portable, wireless, truely 3D Mario Kart with online play, balloon multiplayer, blockfort and changable karts. Maybe its just me but thats like everything I ever wanted in a game suddenly came true.

I love it when Nintendo don't do something in a generation, then next time they really go all out.

The ones with compatability issues just mean that it's not one-click setup and you'll have to do some configuration, hopefully.

Nintendo had a Mac-specific network tester to ensure that it would work with Macs...no Linux one though, but they're close enough.

What is the difference between Friend, Rival and Stranger play in Mario Kart DS?

Friends: Friends play is used when you wish to race against those players you have added to you Friends Roster. By selecting the Friend mode when playing online, other "non-friend" players are not able to join that person in online play.

Rivals: Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection is able to keep track of your stats and determine your skill level. By selecting to play against a rival, player's are matched up with others with similar skill levels.

Regional Play: When you select Regional Play, you are matched up against anyone else who is playing within your region (i.e. North America), regardless of skill level or "friend" status.

Worldwide: When selecting Worldwide, you are matched up against anyone else who is online, regardless of skill level or "friend" status.

WOW.

Them rumors were spot on.

My only complaint is that it saves your friends list on the game cartridge (while I know from the DSLinux boards where they dumped the firmware after someone used Mario Kart, that WiFi settings are saved in an unused section of the firmware, and some things are stored online, such as stats and high scores, so it didn't have to be on the cartridge). It'd be nice to be able to see the same list on each game without having to re-add everyone for each online game.

EDIT:

How the heck can that guy be on the high scores list on an UNRELEASED GAME???

It's a little sad to see no mention of my BT Voyager 2100. No doubt it will support the Nintendo Wifi Service but i'd like a mention.

also just wondering about range.

the DS runs through 1 or 2 rooms before the signal dies, the router runs almost through the entire house. Because of that I'm guessing on the DS i could receive signals but not send? correct? would that mean I'll have to play nearer my wireless router? My sister will be fine. her room is right about the router!

The nintendo is only compatible with WEP!!
The only security setting that is compatible with the Nintendo DS is WEP (Wireless Encryption Privacy). If your router has WPA or any other setting selected, you will need to change it to WEP, or remove security, to play your Nintendo DS online using this router. You will only need to enter a WEP Key if you have WEP security on your access point.
Also how is it determined if a router works with the ds or not, does it have to be G or somthing?

Nope, a lot of those are G and some are B, and Nintendo's adapter is B.

They just tested a bunch and reported which worked.

Well, the strange part is that the playtesters (as late as Saturday) reported that the game was completed but the online network was not up.

Ouch… didn't see that. I think I'll buy the USB dongle just to keep my WAP up. Problem solved. ($40.00 USD) :-/ Unless the dongle is not Mac compatible?

Edit: Crap in the hat! So that means back to WEP for me? :(

Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector

The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector can be used to connect online with the Nintendo DS if you do not have a wireless network in your home, or are unable to connect to the Nintendo DS with your current wireless network. Multiple Nintendo DS systems can be registered to the USB Connector and up to 5 can enjoy online game play at the same time.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is for use with the Nintendo DS only. It will not work with other wireless devices. In order to use the USB connector, you will need:

• PC (The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is not Macintosh compatible)
• Windows XP
• A high-speed internet connection (such as DSL or cable)
• A Wi-Fi compatible Nintendo DS game

Can't wait to play Mario Kart with family and friends flung over the 8 different states. Also, finally a game my girlfriend will actually play (besides Kirby and Lumines) that she and I can enjoy together from our respective apartments on a snowy night.

I'll probably pass on Metroid though...demo was crummy.

yea for airport! Because of it I have the fewest problems of anyone on xlink kai playing PSP games, and now (hopefully) that will carry over to the DS. [ Takes the "plug" out of "plug and play".]

I have to admit, I was disapointed by the original metroid DS demo but they seem to have make quite a few improvements since then. (Graphics, gameplay, modes, controls, etc…) Soundtrack is amazing. Single player mode is a big plus for me.

Yeah, the new Metroid Prime: Hunters video rocks. I'm a big Metroid fan anyways. I'll probably just share my ethernet connection using my iMac's built-in Airport Extreme. I can kill it's sharing rather than killing a router or switching it back to WPA.

oh god yes. a handheld online FPS. with a single player (i gathered that just from the video alone; why would they have the scan visor in single player mode?

I'm looking forward to all the online games. Mario Kart because its Mario Kart. Tony Hawk will be great online, i loved the GBA TH games and though they are totally different from the true 3D games I cant help but get a little excited about a company who can make a faux-3D game good doing a full 3D game. Animal Crossing will be fantastic, I didn't get this for the cube because its coming out on the DS. Finally Metroid. I love Metroid and now they've made it into an FPS action game (hopefully a one-off still) its all the better. cant wait to see what else comes online!

I'll probably be there! I hope quality control has already worked out most of the lag problems. With only 4 players max, there's zero excuse for the kind of lag that has plagued a few of the PSP online games, Fifa 2005 and MVP Baseball in particular.

Does anyone know whether any of these games will be playable through non-nintendo networks, through use of tunnel software that fools the DS into "thinking" that 2 strangers playing over the net are in the same wifi radius? That way if the Nintendo servers get overloaded or communication is lacking, we'll have a semi-DIY solution to play Metroid, in addition to non-internet DS games (using xlink or a similar free service). That's how I play Wipeout against people across the country and get more entertainment value per dollar spent on the game than Sony's financial analysts would like.

Now if only there was online Meteos...

They bumped it to December which makes Mario Kart now the first online game.

The online network launches on the 15th.

Maybe I'll finally have a reason to play my DS. I'd been using it basically to only play my GBA games on a better screen until I got a GB Micro. I hope someone hacks up some kind of web browser for it sooner or later.

P.S. srobert, I love your avatar. I hated those little buggers. Impossible to hit, always ran away at their first chance. Too bad DW hasn't been ported to GBA or DS yet, since both the DS and the Micro won't play GBC games. (Oh well, that's why I kept the original NES... Just to play DW 1-4.

That's what I was wondering... Mario Kart is a sure way to get me to but a DS (or 2!) and I'll get Metroid if I get one. Animal Crossing looks like it has potential... but anything else slated for the rest of the year? What about early next year? I'd like to see some sports games, and if not a full MMORPG (PLEASE GIVE ME ZELDA ONLINE) at least a multiplayer action/adventure rpg (maybe Diablo style?)...

Also, anyone know if it is possible to use an Airport card as a bridge for the DS? So, if my mini is plugged into a wired internet connection, can I get the DS to connect to it's unused AE card and get online that way?

Cool! A new Nitendo Wi-Fi Connection ad! With Ninjas! ^_^ It's hilarious.

Link (http://media.ds.ign.com/articles/664/664971/vids_1.html)

I don't think there are more games using the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection (ither than the 4 anmounded) coming out by the end of the year and details are scare about games coming out next year. My guess is that it will be used in a lot of games. Most of the games out now use wireless play in one form or another so I don't see why new games shouldn't take advantage of the wi-fi connection.

About tunneling your connection through the Wi-Fi card of a wired mac: I think I remember seeing it as something possible on the Nintendo forums. But until we can actually try it, it's pure speculation.

From memory, also assuming that I know where you mean, you have to jump on the platforms. stand under the one that raises up and down and jump onto it, then onto the next, then onto the platform. turn into a ball for the launch pad and bam!

double tap the screen to jump :) they never tell you that. I dont think!

I'll be playing you all on Wednesday next week! thats IF my Mario Kart has not been delayed. which going off this sites track record it will be :( oh well you will all need practice ;)

Its safe to assume that there will be a WiFi pokemon game. Which will just elevate it to an all new high. Its obvious because that Tajiri guy (the pokemon creator) has always wanted to do online. in Pokemon Crystal you could go online in Japan with your mobile phone to trade pokemon but that tech never came out over in the west. Give Pokemon online and you will have a massive thing. online trading and battling would be an incredible.
I heard its coming out in Japan in early 2006, god knows the western release date! 2007 I reckon.

That's what I was wondering. Chances are it will require software such as that used by xlink kai, and we'll miss out on months of fun waiting for it. Allthough xlink kai itself will most likely soon start supporting the DS, that would be a different network from Nintendo's, which is where all the action will be. It's probably best to just pick up a used Airport Extreme or Express.

Good news! Another game has been confirmed for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection:

Online Features for Havest Moon

November 10, 2005 - Nintendo must really be pushing its new DS WiFi service on the development community, as publishers keep on announcing new compatible titles. While Sega's Bleach and Taito's Lost Magic were added to the network-compatible list a few weeks back, the latest Famitsu reveals that Marvelous Interactive's Rune Factory: New Harvest Moon will be joining them.

Rune Factory's network mode seems to be somewhat limited. Players will be able to exchange messages with friends and open up a shop to sell items. There should be a few other network features beyond this, although we've heard nothing about actual cooperative play.
In case you were absent at the announcement a few week's back, Rune Factory is a new take on the Harvest Moon series. Developed by the Neverland Company, the game includes the farming elements of a traditional Harvest Moon title, but adds battles and other RPG-like elements.

You play as a young boy who was found unconscious in a town, having lost his memory. This boy is capable of a special magic called Arscode. He takes up land just outside town and begins building up his own farm.

In typical Harvest Moon style, you'll have plenty of freedom with your farm and home. In addition to raising crops, you can add furniture and a custom floor plan to your home. Gameplay makes heavy use of the DS's touch pen, allowing players to fleece their sheep and pet animals directly.

Communication with other characters play a big part in the game as well. You'll be able to take part in festivals and go out on dates. A young 16-year-old girl who takes up land outside of town seems to serve as a heroine role in Rune Factory.

The biggest difference that Rune Factory has from other Harvest Moon titles is in its new RPG aspects. As you adventure over fields and through dungeons, you'll be able to collect materials that can be used to create new items, equipment and furniture. The game includes a real time action battle system where you equip skills and equipment to your character and face off against monsters, making use of magic spells that you cast with the touch pen. These monsters can be drafted to work on your farm.

Clearly a different approach to the Harvest Moon formula -- hence the "New" Harvest Moon. Marvelous is planning a Japanese release for some time in 2006.

I've been thinking about getting a DS since it launched last year, but haven't yet as I have been waiting to see where the online play goes. I'm assuming that most multiplayer games will be wifi enabled from this point on, but it's a little disappointing to see that they didn't work out a system for games that were previously released as NiFi or whatever you want to call it (multiplayer over local wireless network) to be tunneled over the internet service. Advance Wars comes to mind immediately.

Maybe I'll try to score one for Christmas... anyone know if there is talks for either a Zelda game or a MMORPG game for the DS yet?

How come? I'm not sure I undertand the statement.

I had no idea about respective console sales before seing this chart and I found it surprising. I had no idea how well the PS2 did compared to its competitors and it's interesting to see that the PSP already got a big bite out of a market that was previously dominated by Nintendo. (In case anybody wonders, I own all the consoles on the list except for the micro)

By the way Eidorian, I got big plans for my animal crossing town and I'll invite you to visit when the game is out ;)

No Zelda announced yet but I think it's safe to assume that it's inevitable. ^_^

Edit: Woops. Looks like I was wrong and a Zelda is in development for the DS although details are very scarce. This is old news dating back to summer 2004 so plans might have changed since then. I've seen a 12/31/06 relase date floating around but that probably means "by the end of 2006"… if it's not delayed.

The Legend of Zelda DS
Not the first-ever dual-screen Zelda game (that honor goes to the foldable Game & Watch Zelda system), nor the first action adventure in the series to use two screens (Four Swords used the Game Boy Advance to GameCube link cable to pull this trick), The Legend of Zelda DS is the franchise's first outing on the Nintendo DS handheld. Although it's said to feature gameplay like Four Swords, nothing specific is known about the game at this time.

Zelda DS Will Be Four Swords Sequel

In an interview conducted by Nintendo's official publication in Mexico, Club Nintendo, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma commented further about the status of the Legend of Zelda series on the upcoming Nintendo DS system.

Aonuma hinted that the series will be among the multiplayer Four Swords series first established on the Game Boy Advance in 2002, followed by the GameCube Four Swords Adventure released just a few months ago.
According to Aonuma, translated from the Nintendo publication, "Four Swords will have connectivity as well as plenty of interaction between the DS system's two screens."

Aonuma first hinted at a Legend of Zelda game for the Nintendo DS back at the system's debut at E3 2004 in May.

I personally hope they release the upcoming Dragon Quest Slime Mori Mori 2 for North America but odds are not looking good. (First one on GBA was never released outside of Japan). Imagine the fun, playing a slime.

Agreed...
<-- HUGE DQ/DW fan!

Has anyone been able to play online without problems with an Airport Express? Mine keeps locking up and disconnecting after one level (sometimes in the first level).

Well, on top of finding that my DS's top screen is cracked and will cost $50 to repair, I found out that my wireless router is not compatible with the NWFC. :( I have a D-Link DI-524 Ver. A. NWFC only supports Version C1.

And of course, the adapter Nintendo is selling only supports Windows.

I don't have the cash to buy a new router just for my DS, that's rdiciulous. Has anyone found any workarounds for this type of problem? I've been looking around and have been unsuccessful. :\

(by the way, great forum, I just joined :) )

My screen hinge is broken, I'm trying to decide whether or not to pay the $50.
