Does anybody know if the new Superdrive Firmware Update (http://www.apple.com/hardware/superdrive/) also applies to the new Pioneer DVR-A05 DVD writer?

No, it doesn't. It only applies to certain A03 and A04 drives. The newer ones support the newer DVD 4x discs already.
