Cell face recognition. (http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/toshibas_cell-based_technology_recognizes_human_face_composes_computer_graphic.php)

First I've heard of this - sounds like it could have many applications.

The obvious ones (trying out a new hairstyle before you get it cut, etc) are there, but I think it could be great for gaming. Imagine if the game recognises your facial gestures in real time, and maps them to your character's face? (Useless I know, but fun!!)

Or other possibilites for gaming are there... In final fantasy, or some game in which you have the ability to create a character... and the character looks exactly like you. Or sports games... the ability to model your face onto an athlete would be pretty neat.

Two more interesting facts are that the PS3 will be using a cell processor, and the PS2 has the EyeToy Peripheral already, which may mean that these ideas arent really ideas, but are realities...

I second that.

hmmm, I'm not sure I like Cell anymore, seems like everything I hear about it beings it one step closer to wanting to kill me :(

Cool. Weird, likely useless for gaming, but cool none the less.

Ha ha, I know what you mean. It seems to be an incredibly powerful processor. There was something a while back in the news of the amount of streams it can display - can't recall exactly, but was an insane number. Can't wait.

And you believe it all at face value of course right?

Is that a really bad pun?! Well, I've only read stuff about it and if all the hype is right, it seems pretty incredible to me. Not just an incremental upgrade. I guess you don't?

If you watched the E3 conference, they actually demoed it onstage. The Cell processor can display twelve HD streams at once, and a whole freakin' lot of SD streams (forgot how many). Makes sense, because the Cell is designed as the perfect processor for stuff like video playback.

That's the one. Impressive!

I hope they never allow people to customize their characters in a videogame, such as allowing them to map their faces onto the character.

You must understand. People. Are. Sick.

Would you really want to play someone with a penis for a face?

Can you imagine playing a game like Max Payne where his head was a butt hole? It'd ruin the game!

Aw Man! Right after you said "sick" I totally pictured a character with a penis on his face and then you said it!

Agreed, I've thought of that, as has Penny-Arcade (they made a comic about that, no pictures thankfully). There's going to be a lot of porn if a game ever does that. Hopefully it'll be an option.

In a famous demo in the mid 1990s, 3DO showed off its new hardware warping MPEG video as a texture onto a polygonal torus. 1 million polygons per second in a home console in 1995. Very impressive. Of course, it was later revealed that the demo was bogus, the machine on display was fake, and the demo was prerendered, on an SGI workstation of course.

Nintendo in 1992, promising a $249 console "matching or exceeding the most powerful graphics supercomputers" (paraphrasing Peter Main)

The Sega Dreamcast - "It's thinking"

The Sony PS2 "Emotion Engine" - it too, apparently, is thinking

Marketing hype. It's classic and all companies do it, and millions of suckers fall for it every time, including around 95% of otherwise intelligent Macrumors members. The Cell and PS3 are still vapor. There is no software for it and there is no way to know whether or not anything you see on-screen in a demo is actually being rendered in real time from a real Cell. People are getting all hot and bothered over what are most likely prerendered marketing stunts. 12 HD streams my arse, although I'm surprised they're not claiming 50.

I like this article from 1999 describing the revolutionary new PlayStation2: http://www.eetimes.com/story/OEG19991006S0040 Or this one from 2000: http://www.eet.com/story/OEG20000602S0064 which describes the "Emotion Engine"'s "48 Gbytes of bandwidth." Sony's got a lot of bridges to sell, and people keep buyin em!
