Does anyone have it yet? I was wondering about the multiplayer. On one of the websites, it sounds like if you play with human players, you can't play with computers. It's either only computers, or only humans. Is that true? I think that would be a horrible way to have it set up. I always had fun doing Grand Prix with a friend.

(PS - the poker game for the DS is like this, completely ruined a good birthday gift)

Hey Ja Di ksw,
I'm going to pick it up when it comes out here in Aus on the 17th. It sounds wicked so far but i haven't seen any info regarding your question. Even if it was true i don't see it being much of a deal-breaker.
Have you checked out the reviews on places such as IGN? They're very comprehensive. If you're up for a game in a couple of days I'll certainly be interested in taking you on!

The only way Battle Mode could be on WiFi is if it was VoIP enabled. I am certain we'll be seeing that in the coming year.

I want this game. I've been reading the reviews. everyone loves it :(

Hmmm, the more I read about MarioKart, the worse it sounds. I will probably still get it (I'll check out a friends copy first to be sure), but it sounds like a few tweaks could have made the game a ton better. I'm betting they won't come out with a second one for a long time, either. How disappointing, this is one of the games I had been waiting for.

That's odd. In UT and in earlier games (Starcraft, Empire Earth, etc.) I and my pals like to play humans-vs-bots. It may be lopsided but it's tension-relieving.

The limitations shown in SilentPanda's link are pretty significant, too.

exactly, I want to do a race with my friends against the computers (even if it's not through WiFi, but just in the same room). This is one of the main ways I like to play against a couple of my friends, as they don't like battle mode, and going 1v1 isn't as much fun. I keep expecting Nintendo to do great things, and they keep coming so close but leaving out one or two things that would have made it so much better.

Are you kidding? The more I hear, the better. IGN gave it a 9.5, the only thing that kept it from getting a 10.0 is some minor online limitations (no Battle mode or chat, and it's a little bit difficult to set up a match with friends, the way it is implemented). The game has incredible single player stuff (boss fights even, 32 tracks, tons of characters, missions, etc), great multiplayer, and decent online play.

The impression I got from IGN was that you can fill out the human slots with bots in Battle Mode at least. But the paragraph on multiplayer is a little short.

Hmmm, if that is true it will definitely take it up a notch for me. I'll have to look at a copy. Though I still wish you could do that in grand prix.

Don't get me wrong, I think it will be a great game and I'm definitely going to get it, I just wish they hadn't hampered the online play.

I have it preordered, so I'll pick it up today. I'll try it on WiFi today, and either today or tomorrow I'll stop by to see one of my DS-owning friends and try out the multiplayer and report on whether bots can be added in WiFi and LAN play.

My mom just picked the game up from the store today because I'm stuck in school...I'll be leaving school in like a half hour so then I'll get to play it. Don't expect me to reply back here any time soon though, my DS's battery will die before I stop playing.

Looks like their wifi service is "experiencing intermittent problems", which hopefully explains why my DS sees my netgear router but can't talk to the outside world beyond it. On to single player mode for now!

Yeah I think the release of Mario Kart caused this, Nintendo didn't know what was going to happen hahaha. New Online Mario Kart = Servers crashing

Here's the Nintendo Wi-Fi Status page, it'll show you when it's working or not.

I hope they fix this soon or it'll be their downfall :( and I'll be unhappy! ;)

Nope. I had a friend with the same problem. The Netgear router is one of those that doesn't work properly with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You have to enter the settings manually, according to Nintendo.

We worked on it for a while and it finally worked with these settings on the DS:

IP address: 192.168.0.8 (the last number can be anything between 2 and 254, just make sure its not the same as another computer on the network)

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (or your router's network IP if its different, netgear defaults to that)

Primary DNS: 4.2.2.1
Secondary DNS: 4.2.2.2

Try that and see if it works.

well it was and it wasn't. Nintendo will release a new look DS but not at least for another year. it will be a loooonng time off. at the moment the DS is cheap to manufacture and its making a massive profit, a redesigned model will probably cost more to manufacture unless they use cheaper materials (and as much as i love the DS and dont care about what it looks like or is made out of; it isn't as pretty as it could be).

I hate the DS right now though. I just spent a whopping £770 on a digital SLR camera and Tony Hawks and Sonic are out friday, Mario kart on the 25th. Then Metroid, new Mario, Animal Crossing.
alright i think i have a gaming addiction :D
I dont mean this to sound like a bit of Nintendo brown nosing but I hope this torrent of good games for the DS slows down a bit whilst my money plays catch up. Maybe we can thank the PSP for Nintendo urging developers to make killer games?

^^^^ It's just the Christmas surge of AAA titles to lighten our pocketbooks.

I've played MK DS since yesterday, both online and off and all I can say is this the the most fun I've had with a game in a long time. MP is flawless and lag free. Sure, it has its limitations (no online battlemode) for example but playing against humans is something else. The single player is long and rewarding. The new tracks are awesome and well designed and the retro tracks make this the crowning title of the series.

I use an Aiport Express base station and have no problems with connection.

Here's some potentially good news for ibook/powerbook users who have an airport card but no base station and want to use their computer as an access point. I found this message on gamefaqs, but since I haven't gotten my copy of Mariokart yet (bestbuy is holding me a copy as I write), I can't vouch for whether this works or not. (You probably found this on your own anyway).

I was having problems trying to connect for hours upon hours until I remember how my friend setup his Xbox. What I have is an iBook G4 with an Airports card and a LAN connection (go college...woot) but any broadband/dsl should work. I also have a notebook running windows with a wireless card.

Plug in the cable to your mac. Then go to system preferences and then sharing. Go to internet tab and make sure the airport tag is clicked (optionally you can go to airport options and make this connection a WEP if you don't want people stealing your internet). Click start internet sharing. Also, go to the services tag and make sure Personal Web Sharing is checked and active. Now your iBook is an internet access point and your DS should recognize the signal coming from your iBook.

Now here is the hard part. In order to get connected to the NintendoWifi Service you need to manually enter your IP Address, Subnet, Gateway, and DNS. I'm a new mac user so I don't know how to figure any of that out on the mac. But luckily, I also have a Dell laptop in my room too. What I did was connect to the accessfrom my iBook using my dell wireless card. Then I went to Start -> Run -> Cmd.exe -> ipconfig/all. And walla! It gives you all the necessary info that you should put in manually on your ds. Now just save the settings and it should work. Hope that helps.

If you don't have a way to access a notebook with windows, then you can try messing around. Generally I think the ip info is

ip: 10.0.2.x
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway:10.0.2.1

DNS:10.0.2.x

X can be a random number...try 1-3

Oh...and if anyone wants to play me my friend code is 519750 578365

Alright, I've tested it out.

On local wireless multiplayer, you CAN add bots. I got together with a friend who also had MKDS; we teamed with us and two bots vs four bots on Battle and Shine Theft. We turned off teams for races. There's a bunch of options, including difficulty settings for the bots and some parameters (like how many wins needed to win a set).

I think there will probably be a whay to trick the DS. Maybe setup a local Ad-Hoc network or something...maybe connected over the internet using a VPN? I don't know that much about networking but, guess it may be possible somehow. This way you can use bots...I guess if you wanted to use them that bad :p

This is from nintendowifi.com:

I use a passphrase for my WEP Key. Can I use this?
Some routers allow you to enter a Passphrase. This is then converted to a WEP Key number. When you are entering a WEP Key into the Nintendo DS, the actual WEP Key is required. The Passphrase will not work.

A WEP key isnt necessary for the game. My router doesnt even have a WEP key. All the key does is makes sure that you and only you has access to that router and not anyone else in range. If your having trouble wanting to know your WEP key like I did, just play without one. It's completely OK.

I did not like the idea of anyone being able to use my internet connection without me knowing it so I turned on WEP and figured out what key could be used with the DS. On my Apple Airport system it was a ten digit number

kaylee

I know for my router (Netgear), that if i go into the configuration page, I can find out my WEP key. For 128bit WEP, passphrase should be 13 ASCII characters, and WEP key generated from it is 26 hexadecimal characters.

If you have an Airport base station, follow this to get "network equivalent password" (the hexadecimal WEP key generated from the passphrase) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106864http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106864

Then just enter the WEP key into the WEP key field on your DS.

If you are sharing internet over your airport card, rather than using a base station, you can use whatever WEP passphrase you like when you set up the network on your computer, and then just enter the passphrase into the WEP key field on your DS.

N00bs, you can't connect to a 802.11g connection using the DS wifi. Your router (or whatever you're using) has to be 802.11b compatible. If the access point is protected - obviously - you need to input the WEP key.

Besides that, the game is quite enjoyable (besides the inability to drag items behind your kart - which is what made multiplayer in the other games).

Hi.

I'm really sorry to dig up a nine-month-old thread, but I've been trying to connect my DS to Nintendo WiFi via my iBook G4's Airport card and I got it to work in the connections menu in Mario Kart, but when I actually try to play a game it searches for a while then tells me I've been disconnected from WFC and can I please press the A Button (which just brings me back to the menu). It also gives me an error code - 61020 - but the Nintendo WiFi site refuses to tell me what this means.

Any help?

EDIT: it was my firewall, so I've turned it off for now. I want to keep it on in some capacity though, so which firewall settings should I use?
