In the U.S., the day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday", which is historically one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
As previously reported (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/11/20051120231759.shtml), Apple is offering a one-day shopping event today (Friday, November 25th).
While specifics have not been announced, Apple sent out this link (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=TheFeastAfterTheFeast) to customers promoting the sale through their online store.
Come back to the Apple Store on the day after Thanksgiving for a special one-day-only holiday shopping event. You’ll find dozens of great gift ideas for everyone on your list, and you’ll get free shipping on all items.
Meanwhile, many other retailers are providing discounts and sales (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/11/25/BLACKFRIDAY.TMP) starting the early morning hours.

Is that a Joke? There should be a punishment for false remarks in this thread - it could lead to mass chaos.

I suspect you will not be able to combine offers. I am thinking overall the edu discount will be better - but on some select products it may not. I really don't know what to expect.

I might be wrong, because you're right it isn't really fare. But then, is it fare that they get discounts the whole year, and we only get it one day out of the whole year? - I don't really think that way, just looking at the other person's point of view.

My local store opens up at 6 am, is that the same for all Apple stores? If 6 am is the universal time nation-wide, then what time zone will they go by for the Online discounts? Then I'm guessing 6 am EST.

Doesn't sound like it exists in the States, but here (Belgium) a store has to have enough stock of a promotion to service a "foreseeable" number of clients. If they don't have enough and the item is worth more than $30 (roughly), they have to give you a voucher that you can use to pick the item up for the same price when they do have it back in stock.

Nothing like that here. (I wish) In ads they will either write " while supplies last." Today I saw one that said "15 store minimum." If it didn't say something along these lines, I think they would have to give us a "Rain check." (similar to your voucher)

No. It's referring to a company 'moving into the black' which from what I understand refers to a color code that means profit (hazy memory due to late hour sorry).

Correct, red numbers mean they are in debt, black mean the company is in profit. And this day, the start of the 'shopping season' usually brings companies out of the red, and into the black.

Frankfurt/Main: 657,126 - 2,595 per sqkm
Frankfurt/Oder: 64,600 - 438 per sqkm
First one is relativley large for Germany. In Germany there are only three "over a million"-cities (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg)...as far as I know.

If they were to say "only 15 items", it might be enforceable.

I was at a CompUSA too tonight. Hoooollleee crap! I can't describe it. People were taking 5 of the "1 per customer" items and sometimes were grabbing stuff that wasn't even on sale! I left... wasn't worth the $50 I'd save for a 3 hour wait in line.
They can have just 5 on the shelf and that's all. Usually they have per-store minimums... but with 900 people swarming a store, they go fast.

"Black" doesn't always have to mean racist. This is called racial over-sensitization, and it sucks!
If you did a lick of research, you'd learn that it's an accounting term. They use "black" ink to signify positive cash, and red ink to signify negative cash. "Black Friday", being a busy shopping day, is when many stores go into the "Black" for the first time this year.

Then, at 7:45 I came back, and the line was ~90(?) people long. FANTASTIC!

At least I can still get a good deal today somewhere without having to fight crowds at the mall. An Aunt gave me a zip lock bag full of $75 dollars worth of "$1 Best Buy Bucks" that expire 12/3/05 after thanksgiving dinner yesterday. I didn't really want them, but I couldn't say no to her. I was just going to throw them out, but then I saw they could be used online. I'm obviously not gonna go down to the store put the poor cashier through the tedium of counting them all. I'll spend them today if BestBuy.com stops crashing.
I'm sure there are rules about not being able to buy electronics hardware with them, but if that's the case I just buy a bunch of games, CDs, and DVDs. If it is possible I might use them to finally replace my aging CRT with an LCD for cheap. Or I could replace my aging printer. The only thing I really need is a pair of headphone to replace ones I broke a couple of weeks ago. I was going to buy a nice pro AKG studio monitoring pair, but I have settled for Sony MDR's in the past. Ooooooh, $75 off an iPod nano! What should I get?

An Aunt gave me a zip lock bag full of $75 dollars worth of "$1 Best Buy Bucks" that expire 12/3/05 after thanksgiving dinner yesterday. I didn't really want them, but I couldn't say no to her. I was just going to throw them out, but then I saw they could be used online. I'm obviously not gonna go down to the store put the poor cashier through the tedium of counting them all.
yeah, I once had a jar of loose change, maybe $50 or so, and I didn't know what to do with it. I mean I wasn't going to take it to a store and spend it, was I? So I just throw it out. Wish I could have spent it online, that would have been cool.

These deals aren't very good. I wasn't expecting much anyway.
You're correct. And it may well have an impact on iPod sales. There are a bunch of WMA players available for almost nothing. This was maybe not the smartest move Apple has made. I know a few people that will settle for the 512MB Sandisk one for 40 bucks or a 2Gb Philips NAND player for 100 bucks. Yes, 'shuffle' and especially the 'nano' are nicer, looks better but guess what, aunts, uncles and the rest of te family may not take that too much in cosideration. Yeah, I know, I am expecting a lot of negative comments on this, and really love Apple (have a house full of Macs), but I just think they made a misstep at this one, not to have discounts on the iPods at all.

I just counted them and there is actually $81 dollars worth here. Some where $1 and a few were $3. The site is working, but you can't buy anything at the moment. And all the popular stuff is sold out at the moment (nano's, GameCubes, Gameboys, ect.). They're actually all out of 4 GB models in both colors. The do have both 2 GB colors instock but I really want the 4GB in black.

I actually wasn't joking and think I will spend them. The only question is what do I spend my $81 on? A 2GB nano at $118? I really wanted a 4GB and I don't find paying full price for one to be that big of a blow to my wallet. A pair of high end headphones I would need to buy anyways? A printer I've had my eye on for a while which would free up some space? I don't print all that often so there isn't that big of a wow factor. They do carry my second choice for an LCD monitor, but I am cautious of spending that kind of money. But that would have a big wow factor at home and could be used as a second monitor on a daul monitor setup. Or I could buy an OTA HDTV tuner while I waiting on my monitor of choice with HDTV inputs. I could use it at standard def while I'm waiting.
Oh just read the rules:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=page&entryURLType=&entryURLID=&categoryId=cat10011&contentId=1127211377441&id=cat12098
You can spend upto $300 Best Buy Bucks per purchase, but you can only use 40 promotional codes per perchase. My $81 come from 61 promotional codes. Oops, just recounted it's actually $80 from 60 codes. So I can only use $70 toward one purchase and $10 to a second purchase. And blowing it all on CDs, DVD, and Video games isn't a good option. " Limit 3 of any 1 CD, DVD or video game title per customer per day." The nano and headphones are looking like a better combo perchase now. The only thing that looks shady is that if your order is canceled for any reason at all (out of stock, delays, etc.) you forfeit the Best Buy Bucks. It might just be safer to go to the store, but I really don't look forward to the cashier scanning every individual tiny slip of paper. I am a patient person, but I always hate those people with a bag full of coupons when I'm standing in line.
Damn! I really thought I'd be getting a new LCD for a second there.

Your post made me chuckle! My teenage daughter and I visited the store earlier today -- she had been highly skeptical of the 5G iPod, until one of the Apple guys handed her one with a video playing on it -- she just kept turning it over in her hand and saying "OK, I've changed my mind, this is very, very cool". :)

The iPod is really the only thing I can afford, and need at the moment, so I was really hoping that would go on sale. $100 off an iBook is a good deal, but I just saw a PC laptop for $200. Now that's a really good deal.

I needed to buy a nice gift for someone who was arriving to Honolulu today and it happened to be black friday. I bought her a 30gb ipod video with an educational discount, which I think was ~$269. I walked across the street to sharper image and they still had an ipod photo and it looked like it was still bloated from thanksgiving dinner and should fit in a fat hand like mickey mouse. The new ipod is so much more slick, and the included leather sleeve is pretty plush. Now if I would only break down and get one for myself but I already have a nano and would feel like such a glutton owning more than one ipod at a time.

The Deals I thought best and got were:
Arrived 3:30 AM for 5 am opening
Fry's Campbell CA 80 GB Hitachi PATA HD $0
160 GB Acomdata External Firewire HD $40
(fanless case worth at least $30)
200 CD/DVD Storage case $0
25 DVD+R blanks $1.50
Arrived 3:35 am for Queue reservation and 6 am opening. Made it to my place about 5:15
Staples Campbell CA 200 GB Maxtor PATA HD $30
512 MB USB 2 Memory Stick $10
50 DVD-R blanks $2.94
Arrived about 6:35 after a 5 am opening
Comp USA San Jose CA 160 GB Hitachi SATA HD $20
While waiting in line at the Staples (I was in and out of Fry's in less than 5 minutes - I was the first one to reach a checkout register although I was about 150th in the queue - then onto the Staple line across the street where I was about 10th), a young man in front of me told me of how he and his father were at the 5 am ZOO opening at CompUSA. I knew about the $20 160 HItachi SATA deal from the ad in Thursday's paper. I asked him if he got one. He said none were out and no one knew where they were - so "no" he said. I said "they might still be there." I know CompUSA hides expensive HDs when they go on radical sale so none will slip out in the crowd unpurchased. So I took a chance and drove over there about 15 minutes away from Campbell in South San Jose. Sure enough they were all in the back and no telling how many are still there. Perseverance furthers.
Total of 600 GB HD space for about $60 or 10˘ a GB - (DV Tape costs at least 20˘ a GB)
75 DVD blanks for about $4.44 or 6˘ each. Other stores are selling CD blanks for more.:)

It was actually over the course of several days in October 1929 that the stock market declined significantly. However you often hear of "Black Monday" referring to the 1987 event where the market fell nearly 23% (but that was a world-wide event).
Black Friday refers to the numbers at retailers being "In the black" or positive due to a large influx of sales. The "Black Friday" naming is a little unfortunate, I think.
