Terry Gilliam did Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (based on Hunter Thompson's book). He also did Brazil, the Monte Python movies, and Time Bandits. He has a very strange ability to create really odd realities.
I also really like M. Night Shyamalan's movies.
(edit)
Oh, can't forget the true pillars of creative filmmaking...
Andrew Blake and Michael Ninn

Don't you think that George Lucas is destroying his credibility with the Star Wars Prequels? Gaaad! And as for Peter Jackson - yes - he's come a long way since "Bad Taste", "Brain Dead" and "Meet the Feebles"...
Anyway - been doing a bit of thinking - came up with a few more names, to go along with Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner), along with my favourite movies from them...
• John Landis (Trading Places - funniest movie of all-time, Ghostbusters)
• Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption)
• Chris Columbus (Harry Potter)
• Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom)
• The Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix)
• The Coen Brothers (Fargo, The Big Lebowski)
• Alfred Hitchcock (Lifeboat, North By Northwest, Rear Window)
• Russell Mulcahy (Highlander - the first AND ONLY one)
...still thinking of more...

Come on guys... Am I the only Milos Forman fan?
Remember: One flew over the cuckoo's nest, Tightly Controlled Trains, Firemen's Ball, etc. i guess I am just a Czech-o-phile (is that a word?). :)

I've not seen any of the Star Wars films..... *sighs and shudders in anticipation of ensuing pie-throwing onslaught*
But I'll let you know when they've all being released and my local Odeon puts them on in order!!

Jim Jarmusch? Anyone? Ghost Dog, Mystery Train, Dead Man...amazing how he can convey so much without resorting to camera tricks and effects.
Guy Ritchie, even though he's criticized for "MTV style" he's made some very enjoyable films in a different style than the mainstream, Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, (we'll ignore his latest Madonna fiasco, as that's mainly his wife's fault).
Tom Tykwer is a favorite based on Run Lola Run and Princess & the Warrior.
Luc Besson for an epic cinematic style.
Kevin Smith for being able to make two hours of dick jokes remain funny.
The Coen Brothers for being able to switch styles and genres and do it better than almost anyone each time.
On the least favorite side:
I'm not a fan of Spielberg, as most of it is smarmy emotional heartstring crap without the reality that would make it palatable.
Lucas should be put into early retirement after Episode 2, the laughter at the horrendous "romance" scenes should have clued him into a reshoot. George should stick to the epic battle scenes and let someone else cast and direct the non scifi stuff.

Uh oh... Pink light sabre alert.... heh heh!!
So I take it then, when I go to my local Odeon to watch all the films in order, that it's safe to take a long toilet and popcorn/coke re-fill break during Episode 2??

usually people don't include porn directors when they think of the great directors of cinema. Porn actors on the other hand seem to be able to break through alot though(Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud,(Caligula) and Sylvester Stallone (The Party at Kitty and Stud's)

wes anderson. i think peter jackson's done great with the lord of the rings. though outside of that, i don't know much about him/his work
i like the farrelly brothers stuff a lot... can't go wrong with ben stiller behind the camera either... more for his humor than his directing...

Among all my other favorites (each mentioned above), I gotta throw one out for Steve Buscemi. He has directed films (which I still haven't seen) and episodes of Sopranos and HBO's OZ (these where all great).
