iMac Hardware Dev Note

Apple has posted a Developer note (http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/iMac/index.html) for the new iMac.

Details from block diagram (http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/iMac/2_Architecture/Block_Diagram.html) confirm some comments found around the web.

- There are two USB controllers, and the internal modem is on the same bus as one of the three USB ports on the base.
- There is an SO-DIMM (user accessible) and DIMM slot

Interesting. That makes this the first Mac in recent times without an actual serial port internal. (The modem on recent towers and iMacs has been sitting on a real serial port inside the machine.)

Bad news for the Stealth Serial Port device...

As I recall, a SO-DIMM is a smaller piece of standard SDRAM.....

so-dimm, like laptop memory. the original tray loading imacs used them also.

These specs say that the new iMac needs PC133 SO-DIMMs, but how come? it's got a 100mhz system bus!
won't a good PC100 SO-DIMM work in it? (like the one from my powerkbook g4 500mhz...)
please help, i need to know if I gotta buy some new ram or not...

You should have no problems with your old PC100. I'd say Apple uses PC133 because there is little or no price difference between the two. PC133 is often cheaper because it's standard and they make more of it.
