Super Metroid was the best with prime1 & 2 close 2nd and 3rd.

Super Metriod, followed closely by the Origional for the NES and then Fusion for the GBA.
To be honest I really didn't like prime at all. It might stem from my dislike of the GC.

Metroid Prime.
I never finished MP2 (I had to find the Sky Temple keys), but it was very good. I did finished MP1, incredible game.
However, I never played Super Metroid. I did play Metroid (which frustrated me, no map) and Metroid Fusion (which I loved).

I love al the sid scrolling Metroid based games
Pity the creator died in a car craash :(
The prime series was disappointing.
I finished 87% of prime, then got bored.
this was due to weapon upgrades being "left" around.
not somthing the orignial games was famous for
I also enjoyed the gameboy PS outing for the metroid series (even though one was a remake)
I wish they return metroid to its original format
Long live 2d games!!!!

Heaps of fun, the graphics are just perfect for the DS. The few tables I've unlocked are all completely different to each other, but all look perfect for the Metroid universe. The rumble pack is a crazy addition I just wish it worked with other games, namely Mario Kart. I love pinball and Metroid Pinball is probably the most fun I've had playing "video" pinball since the days of the Amiga. I'd give it 9.5/10 here, it's amazing to see how well they managed to merge Metroid and Pinball and stay true to both.

That's a tough one.....either the original on NES or Super Metroid on SNES......I'm partial to the original though b/c I did not know what to expect when it first came out. But I've loved every Metroid game.....maybe the Gameboy (Metroid II) version is my least favorite.

Metroid Prime 1. I liked 2 but it wasn't until the end that I got really into it. Where Prime 1 was set all over the place, Prime 2 seemed to be more level based.
Though I found Fusion and Zero Mission to be incredible.
Cant really pick a specific game I like best. Metroid games have just never let me down.

2D 'Metroid' games only - thanks.
Also, the DS rumble pak works with 'Mario And Luigi'. Sadly, it does not work for Mario Kart (probably to give you a longer battery life while playing online) - which makes me a bit unhappy.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is the only GameBoy game I still play. It's superior to many GBA games today, in fact. I think I liked it better than Minish Cap (which was still a pretty good game).

aw man :( Links Awakening could be the best gaming experience I ever had. I remember getting that from Electronic Boutique (yes! before they were closed in the UK) and I played it for hours when I got home. It was dark early so it must have been autumn/winter time.
I beat the game on Christmas Eve, half watching Nightmare Before Christmas. God it was a good ending. I even felt this huge emptiness in me from this whole world that I had spent months in, loving every second, just vanishing away. then when the Windfish flew overhead well... it was just an awesome experience.
enough about that!
I've still to play Super Metroid too. It is certainly on my Rev download list, at the very top too! It seems like an excellent game and I am not losing any of that experience to emulators.
My girlfriend bought me Metroid NES Classic GBA for my 19th birthday and I bloody love that too. Though its not got as much action, its a little more paced/adventure feeling than any other Metroid game. Even remember Metroid 2 GB going a bit faster.
If I'm rating on gameplay experience alone then Prime 1 has it. For graphics and music; Prime 2.
Can i say... Prime 3?

Fusion is good, but too linear. I think I might check out zero mission now that I have a DS and can play GBA games again.

I love it too, but I've found it hard to convert other people to enjoy the games. They all seem to expect a first person shooter, and are disappointed when they find that is not what it's all about.
I'm not sure exactly how you would classify them (exploration? adventure? ) but it is partly the pace and build up of the games which set them apart. The sense of satisfaction when you get a power up and can go back and explore areas you knew were there but couldn't get to is great.

I only started the series on the gamecube, so Metroid Prime is my fav, followed by the second one. I just liked the overall gameplay of the first one a little better (that and I got screwed by "the glitch" in the Sky Temple).
Rest assured, however, that when the revolution comes out, I will be downloading all of the other metroid games to play.

I really like that.
I somewhat liked Metroid Prime, which came as a free game with the GameCube but I just didn't get the controls--recurring theme--and didn't get that far. I'm so much more comfortable with a typewriter style keyboard and a trackball than a game controller.

LOL, well, I didn't like the first one because I was fairly young and it was confusing when I played, and so I didn't look for the sequel (and, to be honest, I have to say that I don't think I've ever seen the SNES cartridge in a store). Then they never had a Metroid game on N64. I got Metroid Fusion and was wowed, ran out and got Metroid Prime, then Prime 2. I definitely want Super Metroid now :)

Well, I note that the people complaining about the controls are almost always complaining because they don't like it as an FPS. People forget its not intended to be like that. I hate console FPS. I play all my FPS on my PC with my keyboard and mouse. But Metroid Prime is designed for platforming. I mean, play any other FPS- any time there is platforming, you groan. Any other FPS that has a lot of jumping is hurt by it. As IGN said, they'd hate any other FPS with so much jumping. But the design of MP facilitates that really well.

Well, as of tonight, I'm using a DS to play Metroid Prime Pinball and Mario Kart DS and I find the controls to be reasonable but not great and thankfully, I'm not learning a whole new game pad because I'd truly be frustrated. The DS controls are enough like the GameCube controls that I'm fine with them.
It seems that I was only ever happy with the Atari Jaguar game pad, though it was huge, it was flexible enough to play all sorts of things. Doom actually worked well on that machine, too.
Anyway, I'm opposed to having too much fun, so I'll have to beat up on some Java code soon. :D

I've never done inline assembly, per se. I always called an empty routine which pointed to the final code. However, x86 assembly is 86x (times) worse than 8080 assembly was so, I hate it even more. The Z80 was my heaven in that world, while 6502 and 6800 were beauties.
I can only imagine how bad creating games with an x86 processor would be...uggh. Thank goodness Intel finally realised that memory-mapped I/O was the way to go.

After trying 8080 assembly language, I immediately understood why people were programming arcade machines with Charles Moore's Forth. :D
You have to wonder how fast arcade games in Forth would be on a handheld device since those early processors were going at 4 MHz maximum, even if there were as many as 3 and a graphics processor.

See that is the key difference between high end games with incredible graphics from MS or Sony (at least for the PSP). Graphics are pure sweetness, make you say Hmmm! BUT, when it actually comes to playing it its useless if you cant fully enjoy the game without intuitive controls. This is the premise behind Nintendo's Revolution controllers; but its just too extreme for me to fully imagine it before its released & I can try it.

Looks like we're about the same age.......grew up in the dominant days of Nintendo and the NES/SNES:)
Too many classics to remember.
Castlevania, Contra, Rygar, Metroid, Zelda, Kid Icarus, Legendary Wings, Bad Dudes, Double Dragon, Renegade, Track & Field, Ninja Gaiden, Kung Fu, Gyromite, California Games, the Marios, Fist of the North Star, Pro Wrestling, Blades of Steel, Mike Tyson's Punchout, RC Pro Am, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Tetris, Mega Man, Baseball Stars, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Gauntlet, Ikari Warriors, Life Force, Paperboy, Double Dribble, Rampage, Skate or Die.....wow, I could go on forever. I cannot wait for the Revolution to bring these back.
It's nice having been around to play all these systems and see the evolution of them all: Atari's, Coleco's, Commodore 64's, Segas, Nintendo's, Sony's, and now Microsoft's. I'd still have to rate the original NES as my favorite.

I loved that Temple level because I knew it like the back of my hand, and would either trap my buddies in one-way hallways, leave "surprises" (aka proximity mines) in strategic places, or fire rockets down the opening in the middle of the floor when someone would be running by undereath me. Ah, good times...

Now that I found the Metroid people...
Doas anyone make a darn keyboard and mouse or adapter that can be used for this game?
When doing easy going levels of exploration or mild fighting the controller is fine. But once I get into heavy firefights, it's frustrating trying to look around, move, and shoot with the wacko controls.
I think this game would be 100X better if you could just hook up a keyboard and mouse to the thing.
Does the Phantasy Star keyboard work?
Any suggestions?
Been trying to get back into it after I got the Component Cables, but I usually end up getting the snot beat out of me and throwing the controller from frustration.

My vote goes for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
and probably the rest of them in this order:
Metroid Prime
Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
I haven't really played the rest of them, so i don't know, but i'll probably buy the rest of them on the wii virtual console and give them a try.
as for the mp controls, i love them. they are 1000x easier to control then fricken two analogue sticks. i absolutely hate two analogue sticks, you'll never see me playing an fps on a console, i keep those on my computer (though the wii looks promising for fps). I really don't see what the big problem people have with the mp controls; if you want to strafe, just hold down L; and any other setbacks of one stick are certainly outweighed by how much easier to control it is over two sticks in my opinion.

While this can be debated, I don't blame you for disliking two analog sticks. FPS with a controller is just weird.

What if you want to strafe and look around to shoot a darn pirate on another platform? What if two are attacking at the same time?
The fact that you can either move around or look around or strafe makes it frustrating in my book.
On a keyboard/mouse setup you can be moving around, looking anywhere at any angle and strafe simultaneously.
There is no comparison.

right, this is why i said that in my opinion, the setbacks you mention are still better and less frustrating then using two analogue sticks.
and i too love the keyboard+mouse combo, which is why i only play fps on my computer, but i've never had any trouble using the metroid controls, and i don't see not being able to do all that stuff at once as being a big deal.

I remember Super Metroid to be pretty amazing, even though I played it ages ago. I'l still put it at #1.
#2 would be Metroid Prime, followed by Fusion or Zero Mission.
