Just observation. Why would there be a 10 day ship time now? These have been in the pipeline for a long time now. Also, the rebate on the displays ends on the 31st. And, historically, 10 days, means either new product already announced, or new product about to be announced.

And now for something RELATED to this thread:
I doubt we will see the G5 until at least MW NY. It would be poor market planning to waste Apollo (unless Apollo is being developed for the iMacs). I personally expect to see 1Ghz systems (possibly duel processor) with 512Mb RAM, an 80GB-7200RPM HD, the newest nVida GeForce3 card, and a faster superdrive (maybe with another optical drive for direct CD copying). We might even see a faster ATA interface (ATA 133).

Just got off the phone with Macmall.

I want to order a DP 800, but since all these rumors abound, I have been waiting. A few days ago they were out of stock and now they have 49 units. Also, the sales person said they had no inidication of new PowerMac models coming out, she said maybe something at the next Expo (Tokyo).

Is MacMall reliable? Or is this just a case of a sales person trying to sell now?

(that having been said... the presentation of the new g5's is going to have to be absolutely unthinkable in order to surpass that of the new imac... like it or not, that little white machine is industrial design at its best.)

The G4 towers have been at 10 days est ship for 2 weeks now. I ordered one on 1/14(long story, but I had to order by 1/15 for my work to pay for it), and it has still not yet shipped. The apple store told me that the est. ship date was a "worse case scenario" and that mine should ship no later than mon 1/28. I'm crossing my fingers, toes, and any other extraneous appendages that it is speed-bumped.

I was at the Apple store in Ct today and the salesman said not to hold ur breath on a G5. Why would apple even release a speed bumped G4 before the 31st anyways since the crysral clear savings deal doesnt end until the 31st. Doesnt make any sense to me. I personally believe that we will see a speed bumped G4 in Febuary or March no higher than 1.4 ghz if we are lucky and a G5 not untill the fall of 2002 because they will want the bumped G4s to sell for atleast 6 months before a G5 is released. It makes no sense for Apple to speed bump a system once than do it again in less than a month, i mean come on Apple wants to make money.

I have two theories.

Theory #1: Yes, Apple has new powermacs on the way, and it's shipping time of older PowerMacs has slipped because of this.

Theory #2: Motorola is constantly hacking and slashing itself right now trying to get out of the red. Which means since August 2000 there has been almost a 50% reduction in their production. So... maybe Apple doesn't have enough G4's to fill the PowerMac shipments, and they're waiting to get shipments from IBM.

Just a thought. A delay in shipping doesn't necessarily mean newer computers (although, for their sake, I seriously hope so).

For those waiting with baited breath for G5's, just take a look at the slashing that motorola is doing just to stay in business. I think they are gone as a longtime source for future development. We're all talking about g5's, but if they aren't very far along in prep for g6. g7, then apple is in trouble. But, I think we will be lucky to see g5 anytime this year....maybe even MWSF.

I'm sure that Apple was convinced that their crystal clear promotion would see them through to the introduction of the new and last G4 chips.

But Motorolling couldn't fulfil in time. Either they don't have the resources, 'cos of well-documented financial troubles and this not being their biggest market, or because Apple isn't sure enough about the volumes and productivity of these Apollos.

Or even a combination of both.

Whatever it is, it is clearly administrational rather than strategic, 'cos the current stragegy is obviously a wee bit of a mess.

Apple wants these new machines/chips out there NOW, but for some reason can't quite either announce or deliver yet. It could be that the Apollos are late are inconsistent AND the G5's are early and deliverable.

So what would you do, paper over the gap with a speed-bumped G4 or keep the rumors going and try and hold out until a G5?

What Cleo and others (or not) should have been arguing about is the misuse of the word.

It's not inappropriate, it's just incorrect.

Nothing's going to "rape" the new iMac (original meaning, plunder seizure). The problem is that at the moment, the only "raping" that could potentially be going on, is that the new iMac might plunder sales from the more profitable (to Apple) PowerTowers, (traditionally in the less price-conscious "professional end, unlike the highly price-point alert consumer arena). At no point in the past or in the future will the PowerTowers ever seize sales from the consumer Macs. Their positioning is totally different. But, as I say, it might work the other way around.

Attractive all-in-one machines, very fast, not too expandable but there is a large portion of the Power user market that could be persuaded. High end users on the other hand, requiring cards and RAM and other stuff, wouldn't consider an iMac in the first place.

Having said that - the use of the word, given our modern understanding of it, is clearly at the very least, provocative, and so it's proved...

If I recall they only sell maybe 200 a month in the US, or so, or even more *shrug*

$3500 is very EXPENSIVE for a computer, most cost $3500 altogether.
