View Full Version : iCal, iDVD, Rumors and Deep Thoughts

As many have noted, iCal has been quietly (http://www.apple.com/ical/) updated to 1.0.2 -- up from version 1.0.1 released just a few days ago. Exact changes are not clear.
Despite reports that (http://www.dotmac.info/index.html/news/37/) iDVD has been updated... it appears some people were not aware that iDVD 2.1 was released back in July. The iDVD 2.1 Upgrade is not new.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.... er... CompUSA that is... one Appleinsider user reports (http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=13&t=000074) that the San Francisco CompUSA is being significantly updated:
"There were Apple people in there completely revamping the area today.. seemed that the iBooks and Powerbooks were missing, but they may have just been cleaning them. The area was roped off. The upstairs Apple store within a store was completely ripped out down to the walls and floor. The windows are covered over and say that they appologize for the mess (ok I paraphrase) but that a new display is on the way. "
LoopRumors.com (http://www.looprumors.com) posts information about a claimed tablet-like Device from Apple: "Apparently it will be a digital lifestyle device, and ‘not necessarily’ an iPod, but rather ‘similar to an iPod."
And finally... a quote from one of the users in the MacRumors IRC conference to help you through these tense times pre-MacWorld:
Do you think that we are all running around wandering about and looking for the thing from Apple that will make us happy... but the funny thing is what makes us happy, is the fond memories we are creating in the process?

That last quote is a good one. I just "swtiched" with the relase of the new iBook myself. I am enjoying the community, the rumors, and the frenzy quite a bit. I am really intersted to see what this MWSF is all about, took me forever to relize what that stood for:p
Im actually dare I saw excited about it, its like a culture. I never in 12+ years of pcs/windows actually got excited and interested in a confrence or whatnot.

in case you haven't read the other thread about ical 1.0.2, one of the things they've changed (i suspect the only thing) is that now us Aussies and kiwis (and people from Vladivostok) can use the cals in our native timezones without everything going insane.
with regard to the other stuff... well, it sounds like it's going to be huge.
excellent.

i only wish it were a big upgrade for the powerbooks. mine was doing some very weird screen flickering the other day. got it on video. letsw hope it doesn't happen again, because there ain't no power 4 variant in a powerbook yet.

LoopRumors.com??? Looks like they are pretty confident, and it's good to hear a fresh voice out in the rumor world. I sure hope they are right on. I'd love to get a "insert name" as soon as they come out.. it sounds pretty cool!
Just to tame thigns down a touch...
Major store changes could also just be there for new iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie displays and demos...
there could be no new hardware at all! :)
Let's not get too carried away...

people are getting themselves worked up pretty hard about "a new device" tablet's, vPOD's and whatknot.
i hope people don't rant and rave when the keynote is over. we are expecting big things through the whole year....

For some reason, I'm banking on new batteries for the laptops, with insane battery lifes. That's one item that I feel Apple wouldn't hesitate to include if the cost came down.
Otherwise, this could be software only. Though, an iMac update is likely at least sometime in January. Heck, the four main products could see updates this month. Maybe we'll finally see the death of the Classic iMac? Oh well, time to wait for the "confirmed" rumors.

I have to say, the anticipation is building and I am waiting eagerly for this to get going. It looks like its going to be huge this year.
I think the reason for apple tearing down everything is for a new ad campaign since the switch campaign did very poorly.
The reason everyone is in a frenzy is because we really haven't had anything THAT exciting in a while. The Powerbooks in November were very nice, for sure, but nothing really new. Personally, I like getting excited, even if there is nothing that big. It's fun to see what everyone wants from Apple.
Regards,
Gus

i agree with you there. i do not think that this is a sure sign of anything but a new marketing approach.
sepculate all you people want, because we all know you will. it is part of the fun.

The loop rumors site seems to make the most sense, and seems to be the most realistic rumor about this new device that i've seen... To think... My iPod helped spawn this new device (whatever it is...) I'm sure I'll want one the second I see it. It seems to be more like a PDA than anything else... Color screen, inkwell, video, the size of a newton! I can't wait...

FUEL CELL BATTERIES!!!!
it would be a dream for apple to adopt this into their notebooks first. i
but in my heart i know we are talking late 2004 at the earliest. but the dream is there. a week's worth in my ibook.....

it looks as though apple stores also are joining in on the "cleaining" of the apple sections. Perhaps it is just a new marketing campaign. but ive been talking to people visiting apple stores, and all new stands and such are being brought in. and also one guy told me that there were many boxes in the corner. could be confetti for all we know heh. im too far form an apple store to check myself.
ps does anyone know if the this will be on satellite, cuz ill tune the UW-P recievers in if it is hehe otherwise ill have to watch it via the web. still not to bad with the fat campus pipe

google!!!!!! (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22fuel+cell%22+battery+%22what+is%22) is your friend. he knows manf things.
basically a fuel cell is cousin to the current range of batteries. it still needs a chemical reaction to create electricity, but it does it much more efficiently with hydrogen (fossil) and oxygen.
the benefits (what you care about):
When you use a battery you can only utilize the battery until the fuel source runs out. At this point you must either recharge the battery, or replace it. Fuel cells, however, are almost endlessly rechargeable in a rapid fashion.
they are a long way off, with many engineering hurdles, but we will have them! (thef are enviro friendly too)

The rumors for a new DLD seem to be based on some very thin ideas, and not really anything concrete. I think the flurry in the last day regarding Tablets is largely based on the growing feed-factor of all of the rumor sites upon each other. At the basis of it, I've yet to see any evidence that is compelling.
I remain skeptical, but hopeful...

Okay.. so how can I get the keynote on my hdtv? I am looking for a method to output video from my MDD.. I have DVI and ADC, but didn't they forget about a tv out???? :(
ANyone know a good solution for TV out with a DVI connection? the ADC is going to my 17" SD, but I have the DVI (or VGA with adapter) that is open.. Anything out there do HD resolution or even progressive 480p?
I just want to watch the live keynote in the big time!

:o I couldn't agree with you more. Everyone wants to make the 7th out to be the entire year (holy grail), and may be setting themselves up for disappointment.
I believe many things are gonna happen later in the year ; I myself wishing to see an sorely needed REAL UPDATE to the powermac line. Anything less than a REAL G5 / IBM 970 with substantial improvements isn't considered an update in my book.
I've waited forever for this purchasing factor.

Where on the net can I find previous Macworld keynotes - apple used to have them at this page:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwsf02/
but no more, it seems. I wanted to check I can stream it through a router firewall, which I don't think I can. Any ideas?

Oh jeez I hope this isn't what Apple is doing
The Newton failed for the same reason the Palm succeeded and the TabletPCs (except for the convertible laptops) are probably going to fail. They're just too darn big. If this device isn't pocket size, then why not just get an iBook? My iBook is pretty darn small....
If Apple does indeed introduce an iPad, I hope that in conjuction they release an elegant folding USB keyboard/trackpad, then this might be a cool portable solution. Then they should make the iPad be able to stand up like a picture frame, so you could basically use it like a laptop. I still don't agree with releasing a handheld that big, but oh well, only one more day to wait....

I went out to CompUSA Saturday and got myself the Apple 17" studio display...there was only one left in the store. I bought it knowing their (CompUSA's) price protection policy...so hopefully when Apple lowers their price, I will get the difference....I am banking on it so "Apple , don't let me down!!!"

Save the box and packing material. For all we know, Apple could release a 17" Widescrren to match what the iMac G4 17" has. And if that happens, it will be a different product and not usable for price protection.
