Apple has posted two new video clips on the iTunes Music Store (http://guides.macrumors.com) which are available as free downloads. The two new video clips include (iTunes Links):

Saturday Night Live Short - Lazy Sunday (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewTVEpisode?id=110920435&selectedItemId=110920435&s=143441) - 2m 31s
Sci Fi Inside: Battlestar Galactica (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewTVSeason?id=110899839&s=143441) - 21m 03s

Zap2It reports (http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|99218|1|,00.html) that the half-hour Battlestar Galactica special will first air on television on January 2nd 2006. The show acts as a lead-in to for the winter season of the show, catching viewers up.

"We are thrilled to be the first network to premiere our own original programming on the iTunes Music Store," says Dave Howe, Sci Fi's executive vice president and general manager.

These represent the first free video clips available to iTunes users. Apple has been distributing free songs on their iTunes Music Store to promote songs/artists since April 2004 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/04/20040428142020.shtml).. MacRumors readers have been keeping track of all free songs offered from iTunes in this running list (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=102524).

Wow, I haven't cared to see SNL in a long time but that was pretty damn good. I gifted it to my wife so she could see it in the morning.

Anyway, this is a great "Christmas gift" for Apple to offer - and hopefully just the start of things to come. I realize it's not much, especially a two minute SNL skit, but it's better than nothing. Hopefully Apple will continue this trend, just as they have done with the free iTunes single every week (which, as you say Doctor Q, is noticeably absent this week....) I don't think they'll go so far as to release their main shows for free, but perhaps they could do something like this for older shows. Hmm, although then that would start getting into a possible tiered pricing model, with clips being free, old shows being at a discount, and new shows going at full price. Meh, guess we'll see where Apple takes it!

this sucks why do you need a credit card to buy ****, especially when its free :@You need an account because even the free stuff is handled as a "purchase". But I think it can be set up with a credit card, funds from PayPal, or a gift card (which can be purchased from Apple or a retail store).

Using a credit card is an advantage for people who have one because:

(1) Nothing is charged to your card if you "buy" only free music and videos.

(2) You can edit your account later and remove the credit card information if you don't want Apple to have it on file.

Battlestar Galactica is the best show on TV right now*, so this should great news, especially with the new episodes coming up.

But wait a second. Is it high-definition? No…

Is it in a format I can move and play anywhere? No…

Is it reasonably priced? Not really.

Is it available to non-US residents? No…

I guess I'm skipping it. Thankfully, the generosity of others allows me to acquire my weekly BG fix elsewhere, and it meets all the requirements above. I'd happily pay 50¢ to $1 for the above, but the TV industry is still circling its wagons instead of innovating.

* Well, that and Lost.

As Apple adds more shows -- hopefully in a couple of weeks at MWSF -- I hope they make the pilot episodes of some of the more obscure episodes free. If iTunes has an entire season of a show I haven't seen, I might take a chance on one episode and wind up hooked for the season.

I know $1.99 isn't a lot to bite off on an impulse, but I can't tell you how many purchases the free download songs have led me to make.

Some of that stuff is hillarous. The pilot episode i would have thought was a hit but apparently not. They overdid the castaways sketches(even though they were hillarous). The spoof of that song"Bing Bong Boys" was hillarous though. Thanks for the link.

After purchasing well over 2000 songs at the iTMS over the past few years, I have been resisting the impulse to start buying videos. I've heard all about "The Office" and I know I'd like it but I've never managed to see an episode...and don't want to join in late...I'm quite sure if I buy the first episode I'll get hooked and the $1.99s will start racking up as fast as the 99c iTunes. Perfect way to increase the buzz around a growing cult favorite. It's just too easy...must not click Buy Now...must resist...

Mr. Pibb is a Coca-Cola product. If it isn't available in Canada, you should send Coca-Cola Canada some emails about the situation.

From my understanding, Coke debuted (and emphasized) Mr. Pibb as an answer to Dr. Pepper at the expense of another Coke product named Tab. Tab virtually disappeared for a good ten years here in the States, but I started noticing it back on store shelves last year although its not a wide release. I think Coke is testing it in different regions...

Well, I'm all for free shows. Pity they didn't give away anything worthwhile. SNL just isn't funny anymore (not that it ever really was), and The BSG thing is more or less just a 21 minute long commercial for the show.

I can't expect Apple to cater to my tastes anyway. Contrary to my hopes, the world doesn't revolve around me.

Speaking of videos, does any know what happened to the used-to-be-free for viewing but now is no longer in the iTMS?

I used always watch Counting Crows, "Big Yellow Taxi," which is their version (not the newer version with movie clips from "Two Weeks Notice"). It was up before any of the videos for purchase were up. You can watch it as long as your were connected.

Now, "Big Yellow Taxi" is gone from viewing and you can't even buy it if you wanted to. I've contacted Apple to request to put it back on (even to purchase), but haven't seen it yet. You can get it from other music sites but the video looks worse and it's the movie version.

Thanks for the info if you got it...

Well, he's no Paul McGann, but seeing as RTD does not wish to give the role back to him, Tennant will be a good second place pick... :)

Still, it bugs me that neither Eccleston nor Tennant are/were willing to sign on the dotted line for a 5 year contract whereas McGann was but was robbed of the chance to do the show once the Fox Network passed up on it because they were disappointed at the ratings the TV Movie pulled because they picked the very worst timeslot ever to present it in...

But I digress...

I never got a PM. ;)

I didn't say it would never happen, just pointed out that it requires a lot more bandwidth, which it still does. I'm sure that as long as it is profitable for Apple to do this they will. Particularly since, they already host (with Akamai's help) all the movie trailers, even some in HD, so they are used to big bandwidth requirements.

On top of that neither of these videos constitute "a free episode of the week" in the was I interpreted Jerry Spoon's original post. As others have pointed out the free videos posted this week are really weakly disguised ads for their respective shows, and neither constitutes a full episode.

In that sense that are more reminiscent of movie trailers or the free album samplers that have been on iTMS for REM, Moby, Gorillaz, ... instead of the Single of the week, or discovery downloads. Apple may well have been compensated by the producers of SNL and BSG to provide them free offsetting the cost of the additional bandwidth.

The main point of my original post still stands. Incorporating BT (or similar technology) into iTunes would provide a cheaper method of delivery for big files like free videos, and would also enable wider adoption of video podcasts, since the podcaster's bandwidth requirements would be reduced.

I really don't understand these comments (especially the ones faulting Apple for this)...

Apple has gotten permission to give away certain videos for free (likely someone is paying for it) in the United States from the rights holder . It is the rights holder (could be many) along with governments / trade orginizations / unions that define what Apple can and cannot do with these videos. In fact even if the rights holder wanted to allow wider distributions they could be limited by local laws / trade orginizations / unions from doing so without lots of paper work, if even possible.

Well, he's no Paul McGann, but seeing as RTD does not wish to give the role back to him, Tennant will be a good second place pick... :)

Here's hoping!

Agreed, it is too bad. I was hoping CE would stay on longer, but hey, what can you do.

But yes, enough OT Doctor Who chat - if you would like to chat more about the show though, check out this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=116330).

Yo any pro knows that the real dilly at Magnolia is the banana pudding and the ice box cake. The cupcakes are a smoke screen to keep the amateurs from eating the good stuff ;)

Hey, definitely tried to contact Coca-Cola, have even spoken to the actual people delivering the products (who knew a lot actually) and there are no plans to bring it up north... as a matter of fact it seems to be disappearing even in the northern parts of the US. It is, to my understanding, a very popular drink in the southern areas and that seems to be their target market.

Tab on the other hand was fairly easy to get. My Aunt lives in Sarnia (near Michigan) and pretty much every store in Port Huron (I think its Port Huron) carries Tab.. most have never even heard of Mr. Pibb (or Pibb Xtra)

I just noticed that iTunes can't paste lyrics into video files. I hope Apple changes that.

Magnolia Bakery is such a pain to get into now that the Sex & The City tour stops there. Going to Corner Bistro and then Magnolia used to be a great time; now I can't get into either one.

btw: I personally go for the German chocolate cake.

Here's the lyrics:

Lazy Sunday, wake up in the late afternoon.
Call Parnell just to see how he's doing.
Hello? What up, Pars!
Yo Sandburg, what's crackin?
You thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?
Narnia! Then it's happenin'!
But first, my hunger pangs are sticking like duct tape.
Let's hit up Magnolia and mack on some cupcakes.
No doubt, that bakery's got all the bomb frosting.
I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling.
Two, no six, no twelve, bakers dozen!
I told you that I'm crazy for these cupcakes, cousin!
Yo, where's the movie playin?
Upper west side, dude!
Let's hit up Yahoo Maps to find the dopest route.
I prefer Mapquest!
That's a good one too.
Googlemaps is the best!
True that! Double true!
68th and Broadway.
Step on it sucka!
What you want to do chris?
snack attack, mutha----!

The Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!
Yes, the Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!
We love that Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!
Pass that Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!

Yo, stop at the deli.
The theatre is overpriced!
You got that backpack?
I'm going to pack it up nice.
We don't want security to get suspicious!
Mr. Pibbs plus red vines equals crazy delicious.
Reach in my pocket and pull out some dough,
Girl acted like she never seen a $10 before!
It's all about the Hamiltons baby
Throw the snacks in a bag and I'm Ghost like Swayze.

Roll up to the theate
Ticket buying what we're handling,
You can call us Aaron Burr from the way we're dropping Hamiltons
Parked in our seats movie trivia is the illest!
"What friends alum starred in films with Bruce Willis?"
We answered so fast it was scary:
Everyone stared in awe when we screamed Matthew Perry!
Then quiet in the theatre or it's gonna get tragic
We're about to be taken to a dream world of magic

In the Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!
Yes, the Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!
We love that Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!
Pass that Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia!

I'm like that when it comes to purchasing CD's. I love to look at the artwork and physically opening the packaging, reading the lyrics, etc. Oh, and I can get the CD signed at concerts by my favorite bands :D

Looks like I am out of the loop with being able to download these episodes. No matter. I was not going to watch them anyway until the next session airs.
