54.4 MB for me.
Delta upgrade from 10.4.3. to .4. on my PowerBook 12". This'll be my guinea pig machine until I know it's safe to go on my production G5. Spotlight fixes sound good to me.

works good on my emac. Lots of new widgets. Espn widget, new calendar widget (now black and green), ski report, google search, white pages search. those seem to be the only noticeable and major changes.

Who should use which:
Mac OS X 10.4.3 users should use Software Update or the 55MB Delta update (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1044.html).
Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.2 users should use Software Update or the 120MB Combo update (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1044combo.html).

My rev. B 2GHz PM is fine here - bit of a long time with the grey screen - but the 10.4.3 update was the same, so I just sat and waited till it did its thing.
erm - the Dashboard is a great deal quicker - possbily from new Drivers for graphics. Well otherewise - pretty much the same as 10.4.0 is you ask me.

Widgets take up memory, but unless I'm mistaken they only use CPU cycles when the Dashboard layer is invoked. Recent updates have fixed a number of memory leak problems I used to see with some widgets. Nowadays I have no issues with Dashboard.

The "Architecture" has gone from the Info page on Applications, replaced by a line that states either:
Kind: Application (PowerPC) or
Kind: Application (Universal)
I guess this is better than the Architecture: PowerPC, Intel we had before.

May I ask why you repaired the permissions?
Well, it works ok on my mac. After restarting, I got a question whether I wanted systemuiserver to update something- I answered 'change all'. First thing I did was to disable a ton of widgets. But I can't notice any difference in performance etc.

That's the problem, Lacero. I had Iridium (another brushed-metal-and-pinstripes-remover) installed before the update and I ended up with the same problem. I uninstalled Iridium and now the Spotlight portion of the menu bar is back to normal. I guess those of us who prefer a unified GUI will have to wait for Iridium or UNO to come out with a 10.4.4-compatible version.

Widget memory gets "fat" for some reason after a software update that requires a restart. If you quit the dock or just restart your computer again, you should see your widget memory drastically reduced.

First findings
dashboard = definately faster
Frontrow hack still works...(first time I've installed it...appears to work fine)
G5 fan speed....hmm, appears same, but I've never noticed my fans being particularly loud
Aperture = still annoying bug where scrolling through albums is pixellated thumbnails for a split second...bizarrely this bug doesn't appear in full screen mode....
no crashes, no weird occurances so far...all good...

I hope it fixes that chirping problem, although I haven't heard that in a while (maybe I'm used to it).
You can stop the chirping by setting the CPU energy saver to 'automatic'. When you need the maximum power - put up with the chriping.
My Mac has had this from the first week or so. I just live with it. It'll need to be looked at eventually becuase the sound is quite screwed up. Apple Care to the rescue!! :)
As for Front row - mine works without any faffing about. i used the fix that meant it needed to change files in some sort of library somewhere - cant remember. Anyway - it still works.
Still like 10.4.0 in my opinion. Runs like a charm. :)
Anybody comment on framerates for Games? How good are the updated drivers?! Wow? Doom?

The widgets are definitely loading faster for me, as well as doing the proper animation for when you hit the info button to turn to the "backside" of the widget. This didn't work before the update so i'm a happy camper. by the way, mac mini rev A, 1.42ghz g4, stupid small video chip, and 1gb of ram.

I have always left the machine on 'Highest' and put up with the chirping until i replied to kainjow's post. Set the performance to 'Automatic', but as soon as i browsed elsewhere - the fans started kicking in and were far louder than I had heard in months.

Just installed on my QuickSilver PM. So far so good. I even think the X11 focus problem has been fixed. When I Command+Tab to X11, it brings the windows to the front. I will test this out on my PB since I know it has had the problem since I first insalled Tiger.
update: Nope, PB still has they issue with X11 and bringing its windows to the front. This must be an issue with a few specific systems.

When Mail is set to automatically start on log-in you can select a checkbox so it doesn't pop up. Unfortunately with Mail this checkbox does nothing. So I have to manually close the mail window after every boot.

Yeah, 10.4.3 brought the fans out again. 10.4.4 appears to be no different. As far as the chirping goes, it is also still around when energy settings are at Highest performance. Auto setting seems OK. I just leave it on Lowest for most things not related to photo or video editing.

Anyone have any ideas why the QT 7.0.4 update was pulled and Apple posted a 7.0.1 re-installer with absolutely no info as to why. I already ran the QT update and it seems fine. This update really borked my PowerBook 15" DL. After the update installed, before I rebooted, my Apple BT Keyboard stopped working, so I restarted it really quickly, and as soon as they reconnected, I got a really nice kernel panick. Apart from that, 10.4.4 is running smoothly on my good ol' iBook:

I've noticed this in 10.4.3 update in the Caculator it won't just let you add say 50% to any number just by putting in that number and hitting the % button.
This change kept me from updating my other Mac's. I noticed with this update it's still the same as in the last update! Why the change??
The only good thing I notice is Safari seems to be blazing in speed now compared to 10.4.3 ver.

It's unstable, it crashes whenever I close a WMV file. Other people have reported the same problem, and 7.0.3 didn't do it.
QT does not play WMV files, unless you have Flip4Mac. Must be something else.

That still doesn't change the fact that 7.0.4 crashes when you close a WMV. Apple is probably working on fixing the underlying problem, rather than that particular instance of it.

i don't have "Tiger" in my "about this Mac" window.
Mitthrawnuruodo's window is customized - i'd say that he added that in. :P
but i do have all kinds of problems with my Dock now... it doesn't appear unless i click on the bottom of the screen, and then it doesn't 'flow' along - it stays static in the same position it opened, the magnifying effect doesn't follow my cursor.
also menu's in the menubar are b0rk3d.
usually you can click on the "File" menu, then move over to the "Edit" menu and the Edit menu will appear. not for me. i even move my mouse over the menu items, and they don't highlight.
15" PB 1.25GHz
on the up side - i like the new Calendar widget at least.
also - no new version of Saft out yet for 10.4.4?
also i forgot to mention that i've got QuickTime 7.0.4? will my PB blow up? i got this from Software Update just within the last hour as well... so am i to believe this is the updated version?

After the 10.4.3 upgrade the fans in my 1.6GHz G5 went CRAZY. After that upgrade the box OVERHEATS and crashes! To make it work I have an external fan the sits in front of the machine.
I thought 10.4.4 would have corrected the issue as 10.3.9 did after the 10.3.8 update caused the same fan problems, but I of course was wrong!
I must admit, I have never been this UNHAPPY as a MAC user as I am now! I really mean that. It just seems that there is one thing after the other!

Too much good stuff happening. The updates work fine, I have just one question though, how do you get rid of the iTunes windows when you are looking at regular iTunes stuff.
I don't need the music store there all the time.

Ugh. 10.4.4 does NOT fix support for third party bluetooth receivers.
OSX still claims my iogear dongle does not support headsets, when it certainly does under Windows. Why don't I just bite the bullet and buy the D-Link? Because this dongle is classed for 330 feet, not 33.

OK, so I install the Quicktime update (pre pull and repost) on my Lombard (with 433mhz G4 Daystar and XPostFacto), install 10.4.4 and everything's fine. Cool, I think. So, I put it on my MDD 1.25 Dualie and I'm borked. I'm installing from the DVD now and will try to step myself back up. If I can get that far. Odd to say the least. At any rate, the Lombard seems a little peppier. This always seems to happen after an update and a permissions repair.
Off topic, when will Apple make another Black Power--ur--- MacBook Pro? The silver thing's cool, but always bet on black!

Man, I'd hate to think what would've happened if I'd had some spare cash lying around, a new 20" iMac would most definitely have my name on it by now, as would a 5G iPod and the radio remote.
Possibly iLife '06 for my iBook and a .mac subscription too....
Geezus, I'd be savagely broke but happy in a way too.
That was such a tough night, stayed up for the whole thing from 4am to the end of the keynote at 5:30am-ish then arsed around on the store site looking at specs before heading off to bed for a few hours. Just got back from the net café after downloading all the updates bar the iPod one - damn thing was released after I left so I'm back at home now on crappy dial-up getting it very very slowly.
10.4.4 running as happy as Larry on the iBook in my sig. Dashboard seems to be back to it's best after slowing down considerably in 10.4.3.
Anyone want to be a generous but anonymous benefactor and buy me a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro or a 20" iMac? Either would be just fine.
I have seriously gotta get me a better job. This hand to mouth BS is seriously cramping my ability to keep a multi-billion dollar computer company afloat....

You did what?
You can't run an update for 10.4 on a system running 10.3, if you want Tiger, you have to buy it. 10.3.9 is as far as you can go without spending any more money.

Did you set your processor performance to highest or reduced? 'Automatic' is usually the setting that freaks the fans out, so to speak. I had the same problem in 10.4.3 and manually changing those settings controls the fans. I just installed 10.4.4 and am waiting to see if it has improved on my machine.

Having just read back a little, it seems that apple took off the QT update - probably because it was unstable. You may be getting the worst of it. If you can, I'd recommend going to the support site to get the QT 7.0.3 (or whatever) UNINSTALLER or I suppose a regressor to an earlier version.
I never update QT straight away because if there are issues, I'm screwed...

Aperture = still annoying bug where scrolling through albums is pixellated thumbnails for a split second...bizarrely this bug doesn't appear in full screen mode....
That's no bug, it happens on iPhoto and Adobe Lightroom as well, the images pixelate while you are scrolling to allow fast scrolling without having to render the entire image. You wouldn't have a very smooth scroll otherwise.

Hey all you guys complaining about the OS update when everyone's computer do not have a healthy system or have old or incompatible driver or some odd conflicting software installed on your computer.
Format your hard drive then install a fresh healthy OS and see if the problem exists. I bet 9 out of 10 people will have no complains.
I am not defending Apple. I'm just tired of hearing people blame the hardware or the software when it's the user that caused the problem.

My iBook update went fine and it seems to be running great. It started ip a bit snappier on the second start.
My iMac update is a little different. I did the update and everything just fine but when i went to restart it would not...well it did sort of. I let it sit for about 15 min and never did come back to the login screen. had to do a hard shutdown and restart. After that everthing worked fine. It screwed up some of my shapeshifter stuff and the front row hack i had install. But i never really used the front row hack anyway. besides if i really wanted to i could probably reinstall it...but i am to lazy to try.
All in all, fine update and nothing to dangerous here

Are there any issues with jumping straight from 10.4.2 to 10.4.4 - I didn't bother doing the 10.4.3 update since there was so much bad press about it. I'm running a 1.5 GHz G4 15" PowerBook (ooh, a "Classic" mac ;)) - the previous generation to the one with the dodgy screen.

Just installed and it locked up my primary account. It took 68+ revolutions before starting up, I only counted because it was taking so fricking long I probably missed about 30. I can get into another account and now it wants me to install quicktime 7.0.4. I hope that fixes the problem in the other account. I new better than to install it because I have to defend a dissertation in about 48 hours using this computer. Please please don't let me down.
Update: Back into my account but the fans are screaming. Another restart, sweet.
Update: Now its working except my computer is acting like it is on methamphetamines. Since I'm still in the spirit of complaining, Why was 10.4.3 so fricking slow? Damnit spoke too soon, stupid fans. I'd be sweating too. I just ran it through XBench and scored a 21.63 for a 1.2 ibook. Smoking!

Rule of thumb,
Always do multiple restarts after installing an Apple OS update. I usually do so in the following pattern after clicking restart in Software Update:
1. Let it boot to login screen then restart.
2. Let it boot again to the login screen then restart (the boot time now should be the regular one, not the extended 'i've just installed an os update' one)
3. This time log-in. Let the machine settle and load everything without opening anything. Then reboot.
4. Run Disk utility & macjanitor - then reboot.
Now from this you can deduce that either I am paranoid about rebooting my macs - or that I love the mac 'gong' :D
---
Updated 15" 1.5ghz Rev. B powerbook, Powermac G4 & 12" powerbook - all smoothly all with no problems. Granted perhaps because of my multiple reboots I did not encounter any problems with bluetooth or airport or anything of that nature...

Has anyone noticed any improvements on their battery life from the 15" battery update? While watching the keynote it said I'd get 0:29, which I pretty much got. At least the damn thing was accurate. Of course it tells me that it'll take 0:37 to charge  How can the battery on a two year old machine be so poor after so short a time? I mean it takes longer to charge than to discharge? WTF!?
I'm attempting to "calibrate" again according to the manual, which I've often done to no avail. Maybe this time I'll get lucky

I see no difference to 10.4.3 on a revA G5DP2.0. Will run the update on my other Macs in the next couple of days; G4DP 550 and iBook 800 Combo. Can't wait to play with that new MacBook - if the hype is even close to reality, the 1.83 w/ a 7200 rpm drive should come close to or better the performance of my G5.
edit - gaaaak who thought that ugly mini store was a good idea?? Glad there's a menu item to hide it.

Anyone else had Transparent Dock play up?
I can't seem to make my Dock transparent since upgrading to 10.4.4?

I just installed 10.4.4 over 10.4.3 on a rev d 15 in stock powerbook. Upon restart I keep going to Darwin/BSD console login instead of OS X booting. I can login but if I try to exit it goes to a blue screen for a while with the gear turning but returns right back to the Darwin console. Anyone else have this? or know how to escape this loop?
This happened to me about two months ago on my iMac. I'm not sure what caused it. I called apple support, but they could not guide me through this issue to boot it normally. His final advice was to do an archive and install of the OS from the system discs.
I had an iBook at the time and an external hard drive. So I booted up the iBook to access a Carbon Copy Cloner. I copied the iMac's large drive to the external for a backup and then using the system discs I did an archive and reinstall of the system.
It didn't work the greatest and I had a lot of problems. Eventually I did a clean install and migrated my files over from the the back-up. The only probably now is that Safari crashes loading certain pages frequently. My solution to that would be to delete my Safari prefrences and plist, but I don't really want to do that just yet.

Installed on a G5 imac (the one just before the isight) with no problems. I did repair permissions - and for those who ask why, because it is about the only maintenance you need to do in OSX and it is a HIGHLY recommended idea, a great troubleshooting procedure which fixes many problems I encounter in a lab of 25+ macs.
Speed wise, Dashboard is faster to bring up and in general use. Safari is noticably faster as well. I know people always say, it seems faster/slower, but this honestly IS faster - Dashboard "loaded" much smoother and approx 1 sec faster, 6 different web pages loaded 1-4 seconds faster in Safari. The rest of the OS is hard to say, I think about the only upgrades where the OS really was faster was 10.1.5 and 10.2.0 (from their previous versions).

I did the upgrade and ran the maintenance workflow. Mysql is working, because yoursql can still connect to the database. Personal filesharing is working, so I can connect to localhost with safari. And PHP is working because it gives a warning when connecting to the mysql database.
mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
I tried google, hence the /var/mysql/mysql.sock in that line. But to no avail.
A few suggestions just link to sites with the same problem.
Any pointers?

Well, that worked. But yuck, that new calendar widget is ugly!! :) Especially those weird green letters.
Well I suppose it's a matter of taste. But I'm glad I tried this update first on the old PowerMac G3 at work, so I can still make a copy of the old red widget at home on the powerbook and put it back after installing the update. That'll do me fine.
By the way, I have to say I'm impressed with Apple's OS. The very latest still runs fine on a machine that's about 6 years old. Try that with Windows  It's not snappy but you can work on it and it is responsive enough. We use it here for troubleshooting customer issues.
Edit: Now that I've read the thread I see everyone else loves the new calendar. Sorry, didn't mean any offense :) Like I said it's a matter of taste..

Has the ability to tab while in F10 Exposé mode always been there? I don't ever remembering having this functionality with the way the windows move. It's not new. F10-tab previous did the same thing: rotating through active applications and moving and resizing the windows for each application (F9 style) to keep them from overlapping.
To make sure you see which window is active, even a window that does not need resizing will momentarily dance (grow-shrink a little) to get your attention when you tab to its application.

That still doesn't change the fact that 7.0.4 crashes when you close a WMV. Apple is probably working on fixing the underlying problem, rather than that particular instance of it.
Flip4Mac has confirmed that there is a bug with their WMV player version 2.0 with QuickTime 7.0.4. Until Flip4Mac posts an update, you have to revert to version 1 (1.0.3 was the latest, I think) of their player or use QT 7.0.3.

Well ive just spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with my iBook, but it was Kernel Panicing like crazy. I couldnt even get online long enough to make a post about it. I have a presentation to run off my iBook in the morning so lets just say I was extremely pissed off.
Lets recap.
I updated to 10.4.4
Several hours later the Mac crashes for the first time since I switched 3 months ago.
It crashes again.
Kernel panic!
More kernel panics!
So as soon as I logged in, I created a dummy account then rebooted with it. The dummy account would crash too so I knew that it was a system problem. This leads me to believe it was 10.4.4
I did an archive and install.
No kernel panics this far. Exported my presentation to Powerpoint and emailed it myself just in case.
Any thoughts? I have not installed any hardware. Its as it was prebuilt. It cant be a hardware problem.
I installed shapeshifter several weeks ago and uninstalled it about 4 days ago.
Everything in my opinion leads to 10.4.4. I want to update because im now back to 10.4.2 but I really dont want to go through this hassle again.
On another note, my iBook is FAST again. I thought Macs didnt slow down like Windows after time?

ShapeShifter shouldn't have caused any trouble. maybe it was the update... i don't know what you can do other than try again, and after the update repair permissions and maybe run a fsck.
your iBook probably 'slowed down' because of software that you'd installed. each piece of software adds it's own preference file, sometimes even more than 1. if you're installing lots of different software, that can add up. probably lots of other useless things in your library that you didn't need either, which are gone now that you re-installed.

I did repair permissions after updating. Not sure what an fsck is.
And I still have all my software here. I even added garageband and x11 on the archive and reinstall. But its running super fast. Must be something clogging up the system. Put it this way I wont be running any haxies whatsoever anymore.

i'm not sure if kernel panics can cause data loss... but i'm sure it's not good.
what were you doing when it had the panic?
i'd start to burn my music collection and other data if i was you...
to run a fsck (filesystem check) you'll need to boot into Single User Mode. restart your computer and hold down cmd+s. you'll see a screen of text instead of the normal OS X startup. just type fsck and hit enter. if you're running a journaled file system, it'll tell you what to do.
then just type reboot and hit enter when it's done.
also you could try the hardware diagnosis CD/DVD that came with OS X.

This may be a dumb question, but why do people do OS updates when they know they're about to have to depend on their machines for presentations, etc.?
Seriously. You should always wait until after the immediate need has passed, or at least until you have a few hours you can lose to recovering from the update.
Maybe I just expect this because I'm from the world of PCs? :)

Since you only got the machine a few months ago, you should be covered by apple care. Give them a call.
One other thing though, I think that even if you do an archive and install, the apps themselves don't change - are not adjusted. A lot of people have been having problems with Quicktime causing system instabilities - flip4mac, for example, conflicts with X.4.4. There is a way to switch back to an earlier version of QT: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.html
Try this and see how you get on. If your system is saying all the hardware is fine, I'd guess it's an app. problem.

With this update, the mouse pointer now has lost it's mind. It no longer changes shape based on what it is hovering over (ie, it is normally an arrow, but if you hover over a webbutton or weblink, it changes to a hand, and if you hover over text, it changes to the ibeam) This no longer works on 10.4.4. Really annoying. Also in safari, if you hover over a link, it no longer shows where the link goes in the status bar. Also, you cannot click on a menu title and let go, the menu items do not get hilighted. You must keep the button pressed for the hilighting to work.
Also, when you click an app from the dock, it opens in the background, not the foreground. so once the icon stops bouncing, I have to click the app again before the app shows in front of other apps running.
Does Apple not do any HF testing of a new update before it ships?

not everyone experiences these 'bugs' so that means it's only to do with that person's OS X install or hardware/software combination. Apple can't 'fix' OS X so that it solves indivual problems from a single persons installation of OS X.
most likely if you repair permissions, ect, fsck, reboot, reboot then the problems go away. sometimes it's just a weird install of OS X and nothing will fix it, it needs to be re-installed.
so yeah, you've gotta find out what's causing the buggyness.

I did repair permissions - and for those who ask why, because it is about the only maintenance you need to do in OSX and it is a HIGHLY recommended idea, a great troubleshooting procedure which fixes many problems I encounter in a lab of 25+ macs.
Amazing how so called administrators recommend a placebo to everyone, I listen to this all the time at work. Not to say that its not worth ensuring that your permissions are in check but repairing permissions is very rarely a solution if your system has genuine problems.
Some examples of genuine solutions:
Corrupt Parameter Ram:
Reset NVRAM (cmd-opt-P-R)
Application Launch Issues:
Clean up your Launch Services Database
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Spotlight Search Issues:
Recreate the .Spotlight-V100 database

After the 10.4.3 upgrade the fans in my 1.6GHz G5 went CRAZY. After that upgrade the box OVERHEATS and crashes! To make it work I have an external fan the sits in front of the machine.
I thought 10.4.4 would have corrected the issue as 10.3.9 did after the 10.3.8 update caused the same fan problems, but I of course was wrong!
I must admit, I have never been this UNHAPPY as a MAC user as I am now! I really mean that. It just seems that there is one thing after the other!
I've got a 1.6 G5 and completed the update. Everything works great. I've often questioned others when they said a particular update made their machine seem "snappier" but I can really see the difference. It is snappier. I'm a happy camper. As to the fan issues with a 1.6 G5....I haven't had any. I have had some crashes but attribute that to my 9 yr old who goes to an online game site and seems to never log off.:( . BTW, I don't have a bunch of "tweaks". Transparent Dock is about it. Smooth as silk so far and keeping my fingers crossed

Too much good stuff happening. The updates work fine, I have just one question though, how do you get rid of the iTunes windows when you are looking at regular iTunes stuff.
I don't need the music store there all the time.
Pardon me if this has been answered but I haven't gotten all the way through the thread. After downloading the iTunes update I was a bit upset at seeing the iTunes store stuff at the bottom but started to investigate the buttons. Bottom right corner has a button that turns "on/off" the store stuff. I'm happy again. Cheers

10.4.3 update made my gf's Dual 1.8 PMG5 fan system get a serious case of bipolar disorder. Even when setting Processor to Reduced and Automatic, the intermittent noise didn't subside. Same issue is present after a 10.4.4 update. Back to 10.4.2, yet AGAIN!!
This sort of support oversight on Apple's part for their professional level machines does NOT bode well for us soon-to-be 'legacy' PPC users.

Everything is much slower, lots of beachballs in even the simplest tasks.. I feel set back to jaguar. Kind of like all the g4 optimation has gone out in order to make that universal binary run better on intel or whatever.

How do I clean up my Launch services database? Do i type copy that line into terminal exactly like you have above? I get some apps that just bounce forever and also sometimes cant force quit when i get the beachball. Please let me know.

Straight into the Terminal enter:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
A reboot is probably a good idea afterwards also.

Low:
I had the same problem and Apple Care showed me a work-around. The problem comes from the latest iTunes update in 10.3.x. Here's what you do to restore permissions:
Go to your HD>Library>Receipts. You must find two files in receipts and drag them to your desktop. Find: itunes.pkg and itunes4.pkg, drag them to your desktop then use repair permissions in your disc utility. When finished put the two files back into receipts.
If, and when, a new itunes update comes out we may not need to do this everytime we repair permissions.

I've tried every different update size of 10.4.4 from Apple and every time the install gets up to ~25%, it stops and tells me there's been an error, please try again. I've been re-trying since it came. I don't know what to do make it work. Thanks.
